Community Tasting Notes (average 93.9 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 135 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by peterchoy on 1/10/2024 & rated 94 points: Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep ruby colour, with brown rim and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit of black cherries and cassis, red fruit of plum, animal notes of leather, oak notes of smoke, maturity notes of tobacco, mineral notes of earth. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium (+) acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin of ripe and dusty texture, high in alcohol, medium (+) body, with medium (+) intensity flavours of black fruit of cassis and dark cherries, red fruit of plum, oak notes of cedar, mineral notes of pencil lead, sweet spice of clove. The wine has a long finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Ribera del Duero that has an intense nose with good complexity but is still predominantly fruit-forward despite its age. On the palate the wine has good structure, well-balanced with its acidity and tannin, harmonized and elegant. The good concentration in flavours and the exceptional length is pleasant. While it is ready to drink, it can benefit from further ageing of another 5-7 years. (1450 views)
Tasted by Mami458 on 12/16/2023 & rated 96 points: Just opened for our daughter’s college graduation. Delicious and look forward to having more in coming years. (1271 views)
Tasted by Brent25 on 12/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Clear deep garnet; clean medium plus nose of balsamic, dried leather, figs, raisins and bruised fruit; dry; high acidity; high tannins; high alcohol; medium body; pronounced flavour intensity; palate is tarter with addition of campfire smoke and cherries; long finish; drink now or in a few years; initially popped and poured and was dominated by acidity and bruised fruit; evened out after about a two hour decant but remained lean - note reflects that state; similar to our first bottle, it was not as robust as we’d expect from Unico - I suspect both bottles were a little off (1334 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 11/19/2023: Thanksgiving Mondo Dinner 2023 (Atlanta, GA): Tasted double blind. Turns out this was my first ever tasting of VS Unico and to be honest, I struggled to score it. Initially I thought it was a new world Cabernet based wine due to its sweetness, but then the structure took me to Italy. However, it was so incredibly smooth and symmetrical in complete balance. This wine was vexing to me. In the end, I called it "unknown". (1644 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/1/2023: Last time I tried this wine about 6 years ago I said it needed at least 5 more years and probably more like 10. I think the later guess was more correct. This is still very young. We opened and decanted for maybe a few hours and then rebottled and brought to the restaurant. It was as one might have guessed very good. A bit overshadowed by some of the age on the table but a wine that has a long life ahead. I look forward and hope that this will be wonderful sometimes in our lifetime. (1853 views)
Tasted by MC on 3/24/2023: Decanted an hour and enjoyed over the next two with dinner. Dark fruits and oak on the nose, with a very slight roasted plum element on the nose which put me off a bit. Big but balanced wine on the palate, with finishing tannins that are not distracting at this age but do suggest a long life ahead. My guess is this gets more complex with time and my only question will be that slight roasted element on the nose. A-/? (1968 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 2/14/2023 & rated 95 points: 3 hour decant. Followed the 1994. This wine was denser, richer and more luxurious on the palate and it initially showed far more dark fruits that I expected from a wine that had a much higher concentration of Tempranillo than the '94, but by mid palate the distinctive tangy red fruit elements emerged and it was unmistakable as being the same producer as the '94. A young wine still for a vintage that had mixed success. Just now hitting its drinking window. (2001 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 9/24/2022 & rated 93 points: "90th" Joint Birthday: Charcoal, ash, cherry and redcurrant with some tobacco notes as well. Textured and with excellent balance that gives it an air of refinement. Lovely position to develop further but not too early to have a look. (1359 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 9/11/2022 & rated 92 points: 200 Burgundy Grand Crus from vintage 2000, 4-day blind tasting (Singapore): Pirate bottle. Another tannic wine, good aromas though, a bit riper than the Thorevilos next to it. Some bakery notes, high acidity, high tannins. (4252 views)
Tasted by beatles on 9/6/2022 & rated 96 points: Chalky, vertical, smokey, fresh; seems mature, though the tannins are still biting a wee bit.

Tasted by Hazeo on 8/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Pop and poured and drank over 4 hours. Bricking red colour, lightly floral nose. On first taste it was very earthy which mellowed out as it breathed in the glass, and by then end it was an elegant wine that’s very enjoyable but let lacks a wow moment for me as its texture had some rough edges still, nor with its complexity.  Tasted by Brent25 on 5/14/2022 flawed bottle: Clear medium/deep garnet; clean medium plus nose of iodine, dried cassis, bruised fruit, wood and rich barnyard; dry; medium plus acidity; medium tannins; medium plus alcohol; medium body; medium plus flavour intensity; palate is tarter and thinner with cola note; medium plus finish; hopefully an off bottle vs. past it’s prime; dominated by iodine and bruised fruit; very thin and astringent on palate (2129 views)
Tasted by dream on 3/25/2022 & rated 94 points: A beautiful vintage of Vega that's quite youthful but still a joy to drink now. Thickly-textured and medium-to-full bodied with great depth of blackish fruits and a fine, layered mouthfeel. The finish is concentrated with a brooding complexity just developing along with notes of minerals and warm asphalt. Lovely and just at the front end of its drinking window. 94+ (2326 views)
Tasted by FEDEVIDAL on 3/20/2022 flawed bottle: Mala suerte, ayer un Valbuena 2000 defectuoso y avinagrado y hoy este Unico que aún se podía beber pero que estaba totalmente fuera de juego (1797 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 3/9/2022 & rated 92 points: One of the bottles I found at the Corte Ingles at Bilbao some years ago, the last time I succesfully "robbed" three bottles at origin,
for nuts........, more or less, this one as the last from that vintage available as an offer, two more from 1999, so I asked the girl at the check-out for head of department,
as he arrived I did "place" my offer, 3 bottles for the one bottle offer price......, and then he is rid of them all,
shook his head, mumbled something like "way too cheap", I asked once more, shook his head, and then after 5 more minutes he nodded finally......., puuuh exhausting!
Pnp, all this well known aromas, fine juicy, fresh black fruit, herbs, tobacco,
the palate quite balanced without a decent decant, a mouthful of fine wine is rolling over the midpalate, really lively acid, so this is well structured,
on day two more balance and some more tertiary aromas, almonds, forest floor, the fruit still fresh and juicy, long+ finish, enjoy or hold,
**(**- ?), around 92- 94+ Potential (2253 views)
Tasted by ovenmitt on 2/12/2022 & rated 95 points: Exceptional… no formal notes. Seems to be entering that really nice place. Tannin softening and tertiary notes coming in. (2051 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 1/23/2022 & rated 98 points: Deep scarlet color. Ripe raspberry, red currant, sweet saddle leather, light tar, white oak and Asian spice. Incredibly bright and youthful with a seamless, silky mouthfeel and perfectly integrated tannins in this amazing balanced wine. Mixed berry medley with subtle eucalyptus. Would have thought this needed time, but WOW this is drinking at the next level.

p.s. gulf oysters and edamame followed by snake river farm filets with seared green beans. (2019 views)
Tasted by DoubleD1969 on 1/16/2022: Opened and poured into a glass to let it breathe. Opaque, maroon color.
Pretty nose of pomegranate, red Twizzler, and potpourri. Medium-bodied with ample acidity that hides the sweet cherry fruit. There are some still tannins that haven't completely integrated I think. GF commented that she liked it. Empty bottle. Good sign. But I wouldn't open another one for a few more years. Bottle was purchased a few months. (1961 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 12/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Got better and better in the air.
Still plenty of acidity and red fruit.
Texture nice but on the lean side.
May have held too long???? (1945 views)
Tasted by canan on 9/17/2021 & rated 95 points: Bordeaux 2000 Horizontal (KOGS): Extremely intense but packed with coconut and vanilla. Dense in its fruit core and with a touch of sweetness.
An amazing wine! (2704 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 4/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Unico + BBQ Makes for Quite the Night (Los Olivos, CA): The youngest of our vertical, and it showed not only in the dominance of the oak, but also (perhaps) stylistically: just a bit more ripe, a bit less complex and distinctive, somehow. No faults as such, and these are tiny criticisms as the wine was flat-out delicious, especially after 2+ hours in the glass. Dried red fruit, spice and mint notes. The texture lacked that glycerined concentration I expected at this relatively youthful age. (3007 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 4/17/2021 & rated 95 points: Dark, musky maroon color. White oak, tar, raspberry, gravelly notes, leather and crushed nuts. Reminds us of walking into a winery’s barrel cave with that amazing smell. Mocha, dark red fruits, mushrooms and cassis all roll slowly around the mouth. Really beautiful wine with many years to enjoy.

p.s. Mediterranean ground turkey wraps with kapusta. (2647 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/25/2020 & rated 97 points: Majestic wine. Still young. A very solid core of fruit, big showing with mocca, tar, blackcurrant, chocolate galore, the the balance is impeccable. gets better in the glass ...
#Knudhule#PB (4464 views)
Tasted by Romol on 8/27/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted 1+ hour. Improved during the dinner. Still young (as expected). I would recommend to decant it at least for 2 hours or (better) wait 5 more years. 93-94 pts. at the moment. (3473 views)
Tasted by KenPlace on 8/21/2020 & rated 95 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Very smooth and velvety with sweet tannins. Great bottle of wine (WOTN). While drinking perfectly tonight, this wine has the structure, tannins and acidity to go for another 20 years! (3108 views)

Tempranillo Blend

Tempranillo is the backbone of wines made ihvhhcn the best well-known Spanish regions Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but is also grown as far afield as Mexico and Australia.

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
