Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 6 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by cortoncharlie on 10/27/2023: ~2.5 cm from the bottom of the cork. Dark blood red and a bit dirty in appearance. Cherry liquor, herbs, spice, blood, and some barnyard funk. A bit rustic for sure but exactly what an old-school CnP ought to be at this age. Drinking at peak and held over 3 hours. (124 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/26/2011 & rated 85 points: 1970 Forita was old, tired and running out of steam. Perhaps other bottles are better. Being my last bottle, I was happy to have shared it with my friends. I've had better bottles. But if this bottle was correct, it's not a wine I would buy in today's marketplace. (3396 views)
Tasted by Eric on 9/23/2011 flawed bottle: DOA. This bottle was over the hill. (4601 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 3/13/2011 & rated 92 points: Another curve ball from Steve, this wine had a medium red center, fading to light red, and then clear at the rim. The medium intensity nose of honeyed plums, dried cherries, and soil had us all thinking it was older Burgundy!

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with rounded tannin and good acidity. Enjoyable but drink up! (3331 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/8/2009 & rated 92 points: Murky, ruby in color. Jammy, wild strawberry with cherries, beef blood and leafy aromatics started off the perfume. Not many Chateauneuf du Papes will be better at twenty than they were at ten, but at 40, the 1970 Fortia throws out all the rules. In the mouth, thick layers of red and black peppery, ripe fruit and plums with a minor hint of sweet and sour fill your palate with flavor. I doubt this will improve, but who cares at this stage of the game? (3619 views)
Tasted by agallut on 6/19/2004 & rated 97 points: Even tasting Château Fortia Tete de Cru 1970 after Bonneau's Reserve des Celestins 1992, and even this wine being 25 years older, this piece of wine art still tastes its 13,6 degrees of alcohol and has perfectly evolved ! It is unquestionnably a very well done CDP that shows well the great potential of these wines from Chateauneuf of the 60's and 70's. A Powerfull nose of blackberry fruit, pepper followed by some leather aromas. On the palate it is incredible how young this wine tastes, vibrant and complex with still much tannin and complexity. Well balanced and with good length it could probably have been kept for another 10 to 15 years....Tasted June 19th, 2004 at our wedding. Too bad we only had one ! (4494 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
