Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 4/19/2023 & rated 87 points: Dumien Serrette Cornas Patou Vertical (Ariana 2, Kilburn, London): Cloudy and a little attenuated there is a marzipan sweetness alongside the slightly stewed red fruits. Palate has a hint of black tea alongside the fruit. Not the best bottle. (543 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 9/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Served towards the end of a reasonably long line up with no notes taken but wanted to record thoughts.

Very much alive and giving of pleasure. Tertiary red fruits, some subtle spice and gorgeously resolved tannins.

Two additional and recently sourced bottles left, will post a fuller notes with the next one. (565 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 12/2/2017 flawed bottle: Rubber and funk (1782 views)
Tasted by bengti on 7/6/2016 & rated 95 points: A very good friend brought this out to our with strong cheese including truffled Brie and blue Gorgonzola. It was a well preserved bottle of a wine in its noblest of twilights. Dark sappy red with an intense nose of dried fruits, marmalade, coal. A port like palate with impressive focus and concentration and without any hint of turn or sourness. It was the perfect bottle for what we had and one to be remembered and celebrated. The last bottle he had in the cellar. (3452 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 11/29/2011 & rated 92 points: Rhone Night (Zeffir, Dunlop Street): Wow. This had held up really well for a Côtes du Rhône and it was drinking very nicely indeed. It smelt for all the world like a red Burg, a Nuit St-Georges to be exact, with subtle scents of dark cherries, earth, raw meat, spice and wet stones. If we were not having a Rhone-theme dinner, I would have sworn that it was from Burgundy on that nose alone. It was only on the palate where the Rhone character showed up more, with darker fruited blackberries and blueberries mingling with the cherry nuances picked up on the nose. The telltale sign though was a meaty, slightly leathery animale tone on the midpalate that added a good punch to the fruit. I really liked this. Not mindblowing complex, but very interesting indeed, with lots of stuffing for wine of its level too. To add to that, it had a really nice sense of balance and focus and a lovely silky feel, yet still remaining firm enough to carry through into a lip-smackingly satisfying finish, where bits of dried plum and red dates mingled with earthy, meaty and spicey notes. Not the longest end in the world, but really quite yummy. Such a surprise, this was a really good wine and one that seemed quite a bit younger than its 23 years of age would suggest as well.  Tasted by Mingmong on 11/29/2011 & rated 93 points: Pretty floral, red flowers, cherries and red fruits on the nose. Meaty, vibrant red fruit, some black and blue fruits, sweetened cherries, and candy. I would think its a burg blinded (7558 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 7/29/2010 & rated 82 points: Medium red, hint of garnet. Very pure nose of aged grenache (sour cherry, root vegetable, milk, tobacco). Smooth and round in the mouth, the wine still has light tannin hinting at the front of the mouth. Flavors are subdued, not exciting by any stretch, but are harmonious with the nose. It works well tonight with grilled homemade Italian sausages and fresh cheese stuffed manicotti in red gravy. A nice showing today for something so nondescript as this, at $7.29, circa 1991. An orphaned bottle from my Dad's cellar. (7488 views)
Tasted by tyvoodoo on 7/27/2009 & rated 90 points: wow, who would have thought that this would still be alive. This is a great example of perfect storage. Nice sweet maraschino cherries, pomegranate fruits and sweet plums. Lots of old world cellar dust, tobacco and earth. Really nice with great fresh acidity, sweet liqueur and wonderful red fruits. (6837 views)
Tasted by RogerG on 12/10/1991: the usual wonderful mouthful of berries. Even Todd like it. (229 views)
Tasted by RogerG on 12/6/1991: juicy blackberries and strawberries - great! (228 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
