Community Tasting Notes (average 95.6 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BenBlu on 11/26/2019 & rated 95 points: The evening got long and this was in a flight with Krug Collection 1988 and Dom Ruinart 1988. For me it was edging a quite tight and very brute Krug here and possibly on par to slightly behind a wonderful Dom Ruinart 1988. I probably preferred the Dom Ruinart for its generosity but it felt the PR 88 was excellent, very precise, symmetric and possibly has a lot of years in the tank and has not peaked. (1341 views)
Tasted by thewiz on 12/10/2018 & rated 98 points: (Disgorged in 2008, 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay)
This is one of few bottles I have left of this excellent cuvée that I bought in 2009 from the house and kept in my cellar since then.. Still good pressure with lots of fine bubbles left and showing that lovely golden yellow colour that is so amazing for a 30 years old bottle. Amazing on the nose showing butterscotch, saltiness and flowers in a very lovely and seductive way. Palate is showing some oxidative notes, but still feels very fresh and well balanced with a good acidic mid and a lengthy finish showing grapefruit bitterness in a very lovely way. As the bottle is finished I’m speechless, just thinking of how good it was.. Wow!
This will keep for many years to come, but is just amazingly right now! (1090 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 10/21/2018 & rated 93 points: The best 88 Champagnes from 1988 Part 2/3; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (L'assiette champenois): Some oxidative notes but with good length and precision, maybe a touch over his peak. 92-93 (1746 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 1/1/2016 flawed bottle: Understand that this is the last vintage of Pol Roger's Reserve Speciale produced. Entirely replaced by the Winston Churchill after the 88 vintage.
Opened on New Year's Eve. A beautiful golden yellow. Very nice balance with a fine mousse and still good freshness with citrus, peach, yeast, pain grille and a touch of nuts. Unfortunately also a slightly oxidized note which did not disappear with more air - this bottle should have been drunk a few years ago.
Disregarding the slight oxidization, am rather surprised by the extremely high scores here, this is a very nice Champagne but does not have the complexity in my eyes to score above 92 or so. Drink up.

PS: To my surprise the 1/3 left in the bottle, closed with the original cork and put in the fridge overnight, tastes at least as good 24h later. Was expecting the Champagne to be entirely oxidized but even the faint, oxidized notes from the day before have disappeared. Good length on finish but I stick to the 92 score given the moderate complexity on the palate. (3204 views)
Tasted by theusualsuspect on 9/17/2014 & rated 96 points: My earlier note applies here as well. An extra point because it strikes me as particularly fine and elegant for a pinot noir dominant champagne. (3347 views)
Tasted by Sheila62 on 9/16/2014: a friend brought this back from London shortly after release. This is an excellent champagne vintage, and is a wonderful aged champagne. Freshness on the palate with powerful bruised white fruit. The nose is developed with a hint of carmeled roasted notes. Again just great aged champagne!!! (2785 views)
Tasted by michaelredhill@gmail.com on 11/16/2012 & rated 95 points: Mad delicious (3490 views)
Tasted by St Paul on 11/25/2011 & rated 97 points: I have had this 5-6 times and I have always loved it. Now it has developed with age and show caramel and tutti frutti above anything else. Very complex and fresh with great length. It is a pity P.R is not made any more. (3298 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 11/24/2011 & rated 95 points: A great and mature Champagne!
Truly magnificent!
A perfect made wine, in all aspects.
The aftertaste goes on forever, and is very complex and delicious with some sweetness combined with good acidity for that extra special balance. (2169 views)
Tasted by theusualsuspect on 6/6/2008 & rated 95 points: Pinot noir dominates the nose and the palate. Exrtremely rich with length. Few champagnes ever deliver this level of fruit extract. A powerhouse that easily stood up to the 1985 Mouton and the 1988 Margaux. Brought this back frrom England many years ago. Have never seen a bottle of the Reserve Speciale for sale in the U.S. Not sure this isn't better than the 1988 Winston Churchill. (1581 views)

Pol Roger

Producer website
Pol Roger is one of the few remaining family-owned grande marque Champagne houses. Their grande marque status was guaranteed at the turn of the century when about 20 producers banded together
to establish exacting quality controls for Champagne. The annual production at Pol Roger - less than 120,000 cases - is found in the best restaurants of France, England, and the USA, and is exported to
over 30 countries. Pol Roger also was the Champagne of choice of British dignitary Sir Winston Churchill, who once said of Champagne, "...In victory I deserve it, and in defeat I need it!".

Champagne Blend

"Champagne blend" is a classic grape blend that typically includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier in any proportions.

However, this blend can also include Arbane, Fromenteau (Pinot Gris), Petit Meslier and/or Pinot Blanc as well.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
