Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 86 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MasterWis on 4/14/2023 & rated 93 points: This wine starts to finish its peak but really displays all the identity lf great Chablis Grand Cru terroir.
Open in advance, let it breathe, and enjoy that balance of minerality and secondary aromas finishing quite long. (574 views)
Tasted by Geoff7777 on 12/9/2022: Evidently this wine is Russian roulette re premox. I got lucky. Glorious colour, way beyond primrose and into yellow daises. So fresh. Subtle nose with barest iodine hint to remind you it’s Chablis. Subtle suave palate. Pears, nutmeg, lovely mouth feel of velvety fruit. Glorious, and 18.5 (828 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 11/1/2022 & rated 92 points: Consistently very good without being great. this bottle was more golden than i remember - could have something to do with the cork being dried out (1004 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 12/22/2021 flawed bottle: Too oxidized for me. (1694 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 12/18/2021 flawed bottle: Deep orange-gold, heavy oxidation. John, who brought it, had tested it before leaving home and the oxidation wasn't showing then so it changed very fast (I was about to discover the same phenomenon with my Rapet). (1607 views)
Tasted by JohnSh on 12/16/2021 flawed bottle: Oxidized! :( (1252 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 8/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Cork crumbled very badly (my durand-inspired device was not at hand), so I had to run it through an ultra fine sieve which thankfully did the job well. No decanter at hand, but luckily we had an ikea jug that worked just as well. We caught this at peak - medium gold in colour, white flowers, lemon curd with the slightest hint of honey. Good salinity and minerality, lovely acid and persistent finish. This was glorious. This had a creaminess that coated the mouth - a none-wino friend said that the mouthfeel reminded him of the mouthfeel that one gets when eating durian - and I totally got what he meant. there was this lingering mouthfeel that was absolutely seductive - this bottle turned him onto white wines. No hint of pre-mox - what a wine! (1512 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 8/18/2021: Burgundy lunch: Rounded texture and ripe, honeyed yellow fruit that led me to Meursault. Sensible oak use that gave weight and the pedigree of fruit was able to stand up to it. Some age on the wine but not as advanced as the 04 I had previously. Drinking very well now. (1652 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 8/17/2021 & rated 94 points: Burg Lunch at Wah Lok. Pop and pour. Drank in Gabriel Standart Enjoyed slowly over the whole afternoon.
Almost same note as recently, just with a bit more honey, and nuttiness emerging nicely with more air.
Chablis Grand Cru Le Clos at peak. (1396 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 6/18/2021 & rated 94 points: Afternoon quickie at Joo Chiat. Drank in Zalto Burgundy glass.
Appearance is clear, medium+ intensity, with aromas of reductive funk, briny tidal pool, green apples, P says nettle, some emerging honeyed citrus fruit. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium+ body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of nice tart green apples, citrus lemon-limes, tidal pool brine minerality, wet stony minerality, touch of honey emerging. Long sticky lingering finish.
Very good quality. Well-aged and still feels like it could develop a bit more - once it gets the full on honey nutty notes this will be fully at peak. Could be a risk, but maybe 2 years more. (1570 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 5/15/2020 & rated 94 points: Probably my last (and best) bottle. Classic GC Chablis, I won’t list all the classic attributes. Perfect “drink now” wine. (2089 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 2/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Wines with the HDH Auction (Spiaggia): Very impressive Clos. Loved the aromas that were just the right balance of fresh, bright green apple and mineral with modest maturing notes of honey. Fresh and zippy on the palate. Great right now. (2132 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/29/2020 & rated 92 points: Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 2/28/2020-2/29/2020 (Spiaggia - Chicago IL): Bright, powerful and fresh with classic Chablis mineral textures and clear Grand Cru concentration. Apple and lemon with floral and spice hints. so good now. (2584 views)
Tasted by robferguson1 on 11/23/2019 & rated 91 points: Developed , maybe a touch to much for a magnum but pleasant and nutty and life to go ,but now is probably near peak , but this was an auction item , so could be storage issue. (1782 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 8/3/2019 & rated 92 points: Pale straw colored on opening but slowly turned more golden; stony white fruits, citrus, loads of minerality; crunchy on palate; only after several minutes does it develop some mature notes of melon and and cured meats. This is consistently excellent. 92+ (1821 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 5/10/2019 & rated 93 points: Identical characteristics as last bottle consumed last summer. Couldn’t help noting that I scored two other ‘07 Les Clos (Brocard and Louis Michel’s) nearly identically. Amazing consistency in quality here! (1403 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 4/17/2019 & rated 93 points: Pale lemon, youthful.
Pure, clean fragrance, white flowers and citrus zest.
Delicate lemon citrus and stone fruits. Mineral zest and white flowers, light to medium weight. Drinking well, soft and smooth, fully mature. (1381 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/9/2019: Medium yellow. Broth and citrus, mineral, medium body. Classic, in fine shape, and truly excellent, but not close to being the best example of Clos. It suffered in comparison to a much more intense, impactful Pichler Riesling. (1819 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/7/2018: Pluses-fresh, lemony, excellent salinity. No oxidation here.
Minuses-on the lighter side for Les Clos, little intensity or depth for a Grand Cru wine. (1881 views)
Tasted by Rani on 9/15/2018 flawed bottle: Corked... (1559 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 7/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Drank on Holidays in England
Fresh Crisp with an underlying richness. Nice. (1692 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 7/23/2018 & rated 93 points: Compared to the Louis Michel ‘07 Clos the other day, this is far more youthful, energetic and classic. Just medium straw colored, laser-like acid structure, very citric and saline minerality. Showing beautifully right now. Sad to see so much bottle variability but this one is a 93-94. (1692 views)
Tasted by chatters on 6/21/2018: Served a bit too cold so grippy hands around the glass...Nose shows, initially, butter, toasted almonds, peach and muted lemons, sea shells and a touch of mandarin oil. It has mouth watering acidity, a little honey and butter with some sweet spice and a slight mid palate burr. fruit is similar to nose - peach and slight lemon. This is more forward than the last bottle I'd suggest but no prem ox (huzzah!) Superb (1778 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/19/2018: Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Spiaggia - Chicago IL): Darker than previous bottle from the same case, and more advanced. Still showing good concentration with mature lemon and apple, but clearly tired. Much better when served colder. (2224 views)
Tasted by chatters on 2/11/2018: yesterday's notes apply...this was still citrus married to butter, herbs, toast and happiness... (1784 views)

Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils

Producer website

Christian Moreau, former director of J. Moreau & Fils in Burgundy's Chablis region, is unveiling a new project in Chablis. Three wines of the new Christian Moreau Pére & Fils label—a Chablis 1999, a premier cru Vaillons 1999 and a small amount of grand cru Les Clos 1999—will reach wine shops in the United States this spring.

The new wines are made from purchased grapes, but Moreau will regain the use of his own premiers and grands crus vineyards in 2001, after the expiration of his contract to supply grapes to J. Moreau & Fils, which is now owned by Burgundy giant Boisset. Among Moreau's vineyard holdings are 25 acres of grand cru Vaudisir, Valmur and Les Clos, including the tiny Clos des Hospices, a coveted 5.3-acre monopole, or single-owner vineyard, in the heart of Les Clos.

Joining Moreau as winemaker is his son Fabien, who studied enology at Dijon University. "There will be no more vins de table," said the elder Moreau. "I want to stay on the small side and control the quality." To achieve growth from 250 cases to 6,500 cases annually, Moreau purchased one of the William Févre wineries from Bouchard Pére & Fils.

The new Christian Moreau Chablis, Vaillons and Les Clos, not yet rated, will sell for about $17, $28 and $50, respectively. Frederick Wildman & Sons of New York, whose contract with J. Moreau & Fils ended recently, is the importer, continuing the relationship that Christian Moreau's father, Guy, began in 1938.

Les Clos

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos exact outline

Les Clos is arguably the finest grand cru vineyard. Les Clos has greater density and power than the more elegant Vaudésir It is a deep and compact wine. The strong mineral core is of polished steel and this is enveloped in a luscious depth of fruit. If Vaudésir is the queen of the grand crus, Les Clos is the king. It ages wonderfully – a minimum of 10 years. It’s a large sunny vineyard, (28.39 hectares) facing south. It is quite rocky and has a higher level of limestone.

It is also a vineyard in Bussières

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
