Community Tasting Notes (average 94.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 49 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lkilpio on 3/8/2024 & rated 95 points: Drank with my family on my 50th birthday dinner.

The wine still gave a powerful, intensive and even tight impression: the tannins and acids were still biting and strong, but the fruitiness had already started to fade. However, the aroma and flavor palette was very refined and majestic, providing captivating notes of e.g. bacon, meat, olives, dark berries and coal.

All in all, this is very enjoyable now, but I would like to try this again after 5 years, when the tannins have fully resolved and softened. (406 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 12/6/2023 & rated 94 points: Rich and oily texture, with an undertone of salty minerality too. Thanks for kindly sharing this with us DQ, as far as I remember no one even came close to figuring out what this was. Certainly not Napa, oops!

2005 was a hot, and very dry season in northern Rhône. This led to intensely concentrated wines for long-term ageing. This is an amazing 100% Syrah, with average age of vines of between 40 to 90 years. Ageing, 42 months in new oak.

Appearance: Dark ruby colour with purplish tints.
Nose: Blue fruit aromas, then black fruits, worn leather, and liquorice too.

Palate: Deep intensity highlighted with coffee, dark chocolate, and herbal notes. The oak evolves so beautifully and it really seems like it softens as it picks up more air each half hour.
Tannins: Structured, but so very fine.
Acid: Medium ++

The names of these parcels are to be conjured with, including L’Hermite, where the famed La Chapelle is situated, and adjacent Les Bessards. Greffieux is at the bottom of the south-facing slope (separated from L’Hermite by another famous parcel, Le Méal), with Les Murets round to the east, a little. Ex Voto, made solely from syrah, comes from these parcels.

The granite soils of Les Bessards make up 30% of the blend. Such granite-derived fruit typically forms the backbone of an Hermitage blend. This creates a big and structured wine.

Another 30% comes from the brown limestome-derived soils of Greffieux, with 20% each coming from L’Hermite which can bring freshness (and minerality), and fragrance to Syrah fruit and Les Murets, a patch of Alpine glacial river origin stones and clay (Provides finesse).

In addition, the Guigal parcels have a high proportion of old vines, some up to 90 years. The power and the body of the Ermitage Ex-Voto is linked to its nature and its age.

The name Ex Voto derives from the Latin, meaning a promise, or offering, made to the gods. It was first made in 2001. As this is the 2005, this makes it only the third ever vintage ever produced.

The purchase by Guigal of the estates of Jean-Louis Grippat and of de Vallouit, both in that year, brought some of these highly-prized parcels under the Guigal aegis.

Philippe Guigal had once said “for the first time, in 2001, we were able to vinify wines from our own estate [in Hermitage]. The quality of these wines was so outstanding that we didn’t have the courage to blend them into our classic Hermitage made from purchased grapes and purchased wines. This is how the Ex-Voto was born!”

L’Ermitage « Ex-Voto » is both a concentrated as well as elegant wine. It is really expensive at USD 350-400, and as it is only produced in exceptional vintages, this makes it rare as well. Only 700-900 cases produced each year.

Dinner at La Sense with TC, joined by ET, LMC and SKT too.

Tasted by JonnyG on 4/15/2022 & rated 94 points: A Wonderful Retirement Dinner Celebration (Los Olivos, CA): Creamy and powerful, with notes of cherry, smoked meat and exotic spice. Should hold for many more years. (2328 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/6/2020 & rated 94 points: Opened 2 hours before our virtual Coronavirus tasting. Rich black plum, cherry and berry aromas with liqueur and Sweet spice. This is a behemoth on the palate, yet the powerful tannins always remain one step behind the flavors, keeping this wonderfully balanced. Easy to enjoy now, but just hinting at its full potential. Better 2025-2050. (5012 views)
Tasted by Sundbyberg on 2/15/2020 & rated 95 points: A good wine, a bit meaty and so, but not quite on the level of the 3 x La.
Starting to come around. Give this 2-3 more years to develop more syrah charachteristics. To me this could have been a good Bordeaux, at this stage.

Gorgeous wine with a beautiful nose and full body on the palate. Bacony notes, creamy, dark fruits
Young but very approachable (3232 views)
Tasted by Eros Coniglio on 10/17/2019 & rated 93 points: Nice nose. 07 was more drinkable and 06 Mouline was best of three. All were too young. 5-10 more years needed. (3372 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/7/2019: Drinking pretty well. It's young for sure, but seems to be getting past the baby fat. Some brine notes. Something that is a bit odd. But drinking alright. (2794 views)
(1822 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/1/2019: La Tablee: Legends Dinner w E. Guigal & after party (Daniel & SommTime): Super super young wine which I'm sure could use some more time. To me, Hermitage seems to make good, but not really great wine (I know, sacrilege) and I think this wine falls into that good category again. It's a bit lower acid. More black fruits. Some slightly bloody notes. Tasty, but not quite at the level of the Cote Roties. (2497 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 12/15/2018 & rated 96 points: Ripe big rich dark and absolutely delicious. Could go another 10 years but so good now. (2269 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 11/8/2018 & rated 96 points: A Special 40th Anniversary Celebration (Restaurant Daniel, New York City): A tremendous showing, with a floral nose of red fruit, and a full, rounded palate, seamless and irresistible. Notes of cherries, smoked meats and spice, with a creamy, expansive finish. Loved it. (2367 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 10/22/2018 & rated 95 points: Informal business lunch, no detailed notes. Classic, aristocratic nose dominated by meaty and earthy notes with dark berries underneath. Same is true for the palate. High degree of elegance despite layers of intense aromas. Dark berries, meaty, earthy notes, some tertiary development there, good structure with fine-grained velvety tannins and a well-integrated acidity. Drinks well today but there’s a lot more potential to smoothen further and gain additional weight and complexity.

Decanting: Smooth and expressive after 90 minute in the decanter. (2415 views)
Tasted by robferguson1 on 7/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Stunning, it hangs on the palate and back end so long it takes twice my usual drink time, savour it. (2312 views)
Tasted by BSA on 2/10/2018 & rated 94 points: Intense blueberries, wood, vanilla, hanging meats. Juicy. Huge. Sweet, soft tannins. Long finish. No doubt this will be great. Probably needs at least 10-15 years. (2359 views)
Tasted by Opusone99 on 1/27/2018 & rated 93 points: Belle bouteille, mais trop jeune en ce moment. (2367 views)
Tasted by etyc on 8/15/2017: Coming after the whites and Burgs/Bojo, this came straight out of the gates "making a statement", stamping its authority. Earth, meat, smoke on the nose, the palate that followed was what that screamed greatness - great intensity with dark-red fruits, earth, spice, meat and good freshness to boot, making it never too overbearing. Again, this is another wine that warrants ageing. Will definitely be better with time! (3030 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 5/20/2017 & rated 94 points: Very dark red towards black; lots of tar, licorice and pepper; expressive taste, licorice, tobacco, black pepper, quite intensive, somewhat acidic, slightly tannic; lots going on, still appears quite young (3019 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 4/29/2017 & rated 94 points: Big and bruising, this took some time to open up in the glass. Tons of fruit packed in here. Such a contrast with the la Chapelle, this is so young even after 12 years. Sure to be a long lived wine. Long finish. (2582 views)
Tasted by sdr on 1/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Even better this time out of the magic Zaltos. Nicely perfumed, deep and rich. While obviously fruity, there is enough structure and minerality to make it interesting. Terrific balance, very enjoyable now with the best to come. (2669 views)
Tasted by la turque on 1/25/2017 & rated 94 points: Ad Hoc Tasting (Chez Moi): Outstanding! Drinking now with a good decant. Floral aromas, with red and black fruits and decent complexity. Impeccably balanced on the palate. Almost made it into the top three wines. (3012 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 12/2/2016 & rated 94 points: ChrisD's 40th: Toast, oak, floral notes, earth and olives. Earthy flavours through the palate, has plenty of layers and depth to it, giving it a sense of complexity already. Great length and structure, this will be a wine that will reward further patience. (2820 views)
Tasted by Rhone Redder on 7/13/2016 & rated 97 points: Glistening red cherry in colour although seemed to get darker. Huge minerality, scorched wood, intense red jelly like fruits, yuhu glue, meat and smoke. The wine floats over the palate but when held in the mouth seemed to find every single taste bud. Lively acidity with a double mouth watering with each mouthful. Sweet tannins. Complex and riveting wine with a myriad of flavours. Obviously young but gave me plenty to think about. (2750 views)
Tasted by k H i L o on 4/23/2016 & rated 93 points: Lorsque la force exprime de la subtilité, ça donne Ex Voto. (2645 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 1/22/2016 & rated 89 points: Dark rich cherries , spicy fruited. Still at infancy with lots of powerful fruits. Needs time. Very long lasting. Lot of potential. (3001 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
