Community Tasting Notes (average 94.8 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 287 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Peech on 7/29/2023 & rated 95 points: drank 45 minutes after decanting. Pretty ripe and almost jammy, with fragrant spices, almost like potpourri and forest. Pretty smooth on the palate now. (999 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 6/18/2023 & rated 97 points: Treated the same as last note as far as aeration. Notes are similar with even more smoothness with waning tannins (still present), deeper dark fruit flavors. Delightful wine (963 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/16/2023 & rated 92 points: SQN Dinner (Jordan's Place - Chicago IL): In 06/07 flight. Meaty and firm, this was certainly enjoyable but showed less complexity or nuance vs the others. (2184 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 1/1/2023 & rated 97 points: Wow wow wow ! Big thing in the glass. After 8 h in the big decanter this juice was off the charts. But not overdone or heavy. Once again Krankl managed to make a unique liquid with tons of dark fruits and a real amount of freshness and herbal stuff for perfect balance. Has years and years. Amazing. 97+ (1610 views)
Tasted by rogerr on 10/8/2022 & rated 95 points: Agree with other recent notes. Wine is drinking beautifully. Next day was even better. Will improve with age. (1770 views)
Tasted by medzac2004 on 9/21/2022: Decant for 1 hour. It truly opens up and is like a ray of sun shine. Well balanced, unique flavors, lots of fruit. Very smooth. Share with friends and family. Don’t sit on this marvelous wine much longer. It’s drinking beautifully. (1302 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 8/26/2022 & rated 97 points: Rich, delicious highly extracted blackberry fruit with cassis and toasty oak flavors, excellent structure, long finish (1337 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 7/23/2022 & rated 95 points: Decanted for one hour. Nose of blackberry, blueberry, black plum, chocolate, licorice, spice and bramble. Blackberry, blueberry, chocolate, anise, spice and vanilla on the palate. Very long velvety finish with excellent depth. Full bodied. Served with hickory smoked beef plate ribs. (1063 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 1/22/2022 & rated 98 points: The last bottle of SQN from my cellar from a significant lot bought back in 2010. I was not sure if it would hold good but on the contrary it exceeded expectations. Nose is out of this world with unbelievable intensity, clarity, focus and, yes, complexity: ripe fruit, mint, camphor, just amazing. Plush on the palate, balanced and rounded with nothing in excess. Notes of coffe and cocoa on the mouth, unbelievable finish. Wine does not get better, only different. Krankl, probably my favourite producer from the USA yet. Enjoyed at home with my friend Yiannis. Drank together with Beaucastel 's Hommage 2005 which, at least on the nose, was eclipsed by the beautiful Raven... (1695 views)
Tasted by Peech on 12/24/2021 & rated 96 points: drank 1 hour and 45 minutes after decanting. Really big and powerful, with tons of vanilla oak, really fragrant and woodsy, cedar notes, really nice and exotic. Second pour about 2 hours and 15 minutes after decanting showing metallic notes, really ripe and sweet on the palate. (1015 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 12/5/2021 & rated 94 points: WIML94

Tasted non blind.

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of coffee, roasted meat, Kirsch, white pepper, plums and currants. Flavors of black raspberries, black cherries and loganberries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink now with some air or continue to hold. (1570 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 1/31/2021 & rated 94 points: 2hr decant. Would not have pegged this an SQN, although very big and bold, but not far from the mark of my expectations. Definitely had more cote rotie characteristics like bacon fat. Got even more expressive as the night went on. Next time do a very long decant. (2723 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 12/28/2020 & rated 96 points: The extra time has been kind to this wine. A softer fruit profile with no hint of alcohol. 3 hour slo ox with full hour regular decant. Complex wine, smooth mouthfeel, balanced, long long finish. Delightful wine. (2588 views)
Tasted by Peech on 10/28/2020 & rated 95 points: Served 3½ hours after opening. Very minty, metallic, with ripe fruit. Drinking really well now. (874 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 9/28/2020: Completely better experience than the one three years ago....just rocking. Delicious, dark fruits and floral. Balanced. (2738 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 9/7/2020 & rated 96 points: 1.5 hour decant. I enjoyed this bottle so much more than prior ones. The extra bottle age has helped this evolve and come together. The alcohol is now well integrated and the dense fruit bomb has softened and the wine become more complex. Although clearly Syrah dominated, the Grenache and Viognier are now delineated and the Viognier adds a wonderful Côte-Rôtie sophistication. Got one left and look to enjoy it sometime in the next year or two. (2514 views)
Tasted by GFischmann on 6/5/2020 & rated 78 points: Wonderful dark berry fruit with continued fullness and balanced tannins with acidity. Great oak flavors very smooth. Tertiary notes of leather, chocolate and moist earth. (2701 views)
Tasted by Big Dog E on 4/8/2020 & rated 96 points: Spectacular—drank w the family on Passover. Right out of the bottle, overwhelming olive and undercurrent of fruit..let it decant for an hour and poured, and still great olive smell, but became more well rounded—dried herbs, fresh fruit, undercurrent of licorice, and just a hint of brightness. Really spectacular, and very fun to drink with the family (2179 views)
Tasted by Peech on 2/15/2020 & rated 97 points: served more than 1½ hours after decanting, and was just opening up. Metallic notes, sooo ripe and sooo fragrant. Really fucking good 2½ hours later. Still going strong after 3½ hours. (765 views)
Tasted by Magnum PI on 1/4/2020 & rated 96 points: I enjoyed this bottle with my friend Antonio, and noted sommelier Charley Ludwig at The Oven. Decanted for an hour before drinking. Dark, initially guarded, balanced, some noticeable alcohol, but excellent balance and fruit. Initially dark berries dominant, hint of spice, olives. The wine continued to open with each glass, and two hours was really open and drinkable. The olive notes took a more prominent position, and the interplay with the dark fruit and the pepper and spice was really outstanding. This wine is still somewhat primary, and has years to go. I suspect five years would do it good. (2555 views)
Tasted by Dehrmann on 6/17/2019 & rated 92 points: Dinner Siegfried/Ale/Marcus/Christine...montée de tonnerre 1 (3052 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 5/25/2019: Raven 4. Not my thing. (2967 views)
Tasted by Markus IWC on 5/9/2019 & rated 91 points: Sine Qua Non tema, vin 2:

93% Syrah, 5% Grenache och 2% Viognier. RP96

Viss mognad, cassis, exotiska kryddor.

Extremt koncentrerad, gräddig och viskös textur, lite bränd finish. Alkohol sötma. Alla rattar på 10 här, mycket av allt. Behöver mer lagring.

Tasted by jviz on 4/14/2019 & rated 96 points: Big, expansive, dark berry liquor, followed by strong black pepper. What a treat! (2751 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 12/8/2018 & rated 95 points: Raven No. 4. Decanted 2.5 hours. Explosive fruit, vanilla Oak. Alcohol noticeable but not hot. 30+ second finish that was rich and nearly creamy. Hints of spice. (3024 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
