Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 74 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dontime on 10/26/2016: Still going strong, last of my 16 bottles purchased on sale at $12 each. Amazing QPR at that price. Yummy! Prior notes apply. 92-94. (2422 views)
Tasted by noahbw on 5/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Lovely nose of candied fruit, dusty wood, hints of buttery cinnamon pie crust, yet with fantastic notes of brine and olives. Great dimension. On the palate comes thick dark velvety ripe fruit, slight espresso. Fat in the mouth, yet with just enough tannin to sing through. Finishes long and lively, yet with the caress of a warm smokey fire. (3300 views)
Tasted by dontime on 3/1/2015: Another great bottle. Tons of olive tapenade filled the room upon opening. Heavy in the mouth, flavors of olives, smoky meat, red fruit and spice. Long, satisfying finish. No heat, just smooth and delicious. If scoring 92-94. (3464 views)
Tasted by tsdv on 2/27/2015 & rated 80 points: I understand how many could like this, but I agree with the folks who say it is heavy, hot, and overdone. It is booze. Not my style. Not worth the $12. (3294 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 12/26/2014 & rated 91 points: Purple center with a violet rim. Red-fruited with raspberry and cherry coupled with earthy notes and cloves. Medium-bodied with good acidity and a silky mouthfeel. Initially, it was not as giving as expected, but with air, it opened beautifully. Overall, I enjoyed watching this wine evolve throughout the evening and provide ripe fruit and spice as well as a touch of structure for good measure. (3260 views)
Tasted by dontime on 8/28/2014: Maybe the best bottle of $12 wine I've ever had. Bought 16 of these when the state monopoly store put them on sale. Each and every one has been outstanding. Three left. If scoring 92-94. (2113 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 6/23/2014 & rated 88 points: Plenty of fruit and heat in this heavy bodied wine. Candied cherries dominate with some strawberry jam notes. There is a tobacco or twiggy flavor. A bit overdone for me. (1471 views)
Tasted by jeagle on 3/1/2013: Decanted 4 hours prior to drinking. If this, my last bottle, is a true representation of this wines development, then drink them quickly. The once brash fruit was withered leaving only dry earth and tannin in its demise. (2840 views)
Tasted by dontime on 12/10/2012: Another great bottle of McPrice Myers Grenache! Blackberry, leather and licorice. Medium mouth feel. Smooth finish. If scoring 90-92. (3025 views)
Tasted by dontime on 10/30/2012: Didn't enjoy this bottle as much as the first two. Maybe because mrs. dontime was out-of-town? Seemed a bit on the harsh side. Still complex and a great value. If scoring 88-90. (2967 views)
Tasted by Meerlust on 9/9/2012 & rated 92 points: Dark purple/red color. Explosive nose of raspberry, boysenberry, sandlewood, and spice. The palate is hedonistic and follows the nose perfectly. This is medium-bodied with excellent acidity and apparent tannins on the back end. The finish is long and rich. Overall, this is an outstanding example of what can be done with grenache. There is tremendous fruit and richness but with some edgy tannins to make it interesting. (3024 views)
Tasted by lushlife on 9/8/2012 & rated 90 points: not my favorite grenache, but good and at 11.99 it's a good value. nice brambly berry fruit, smooth, with still a bit of heat on the finish. (2787 views)
Tasted by dontime on 9/2/2012: Second bottle in three nights. Just to make sure bottle number one was not a fluke. It wasn't. Fabulous wine at an amazing price. See prior note for details. Ordered another case. (1888 views)
Tasted by dontime on 8/31/2012: Beautiful nose upon opening, but a lot of heat. Given 30-45 minutes, the heat disappeared and left a wonderful bottle of wine that was an absolute steal at $12 from the state monopoly store on-line sale. Black fruit (cherry licorice), chocolate, tobacco, smoke, wild flowers - this baby has it all. Continued to evolve in the glass. A fantastic FFP. Buying more. If scoring - 91-93. (1660 views)
Tasted by HappyWineGuy on 8/25/2012: Meaty, dry and spicy. Needs some time to open... (1618 views)
Tasted by Central Coast Wino on 8/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Nice Grenache, concentrated flavors, but a bit hot. The 15.8% alcohol comes through, preventing a higher score. (1643 views)
Tasted by Grape Stuff on 7/17/2012 & rated 92 points: 30-45 minute decant. A really lovely grenache! A great strawberry and rhubarb profile with a strong floral component on the mid-palate. Sweet, soft, and well integrated tannins with a smokey, cocoa, and creamy hint on the finish. This is in a great place right now. Outstanding. (1953 views)
Tasted by Philly NQ King on 6/19/2012 & rated 92 points: Minimal heat for 15.8% and not as glycerine-y as expected...deep dark fruits with a pleasant, fine tannin grip. Enticingly smokey nose, but with a clean and pure palate. Black raspberries, anise and charcoal...I need more! (2018 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 5/21/2011 & rated 83 points: McPryce Myers L'Ange Rouge Vertical: Supplied the bottle described by Phredd in his notes. Seems '07 lacks the earth, spice, and "secondary subtlety" of the '06 or '08 while being just as bold as the '09, which is the latest release as of this tasting note. However the '09, being younger, seemed more "refined" and liqueur-like; the 07 just seems over the top and alcohol dominated as compared to the other vintages tasted in this '06 - '09 vertical. Sound but unbalanced, Overall Rating B-. (3826 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 5/21/2011 & rated 87 points: NC Cindy Tasting. Decanted a full 12 hours before being transported to the event. Slightly darker than the 2006, this is still funky, with an overwhelming sense of black pepper on the nose. The alcohol, even after the extended decant, is wildly powerful. On the palate, though, there's lot of blackberry fruit, but very little in the way of secondary flavors. I was expecting some depth, but the flavor is medium-short, and there's just not enough here to consider it to be an above-average effort. The average CT value is $30, and I just wouldn't want to pay that for this wine. (3503 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 5/14/2011 & rated 91 points: Drinking very nicely. Full bodied Grenache, bold and spicy. Not a shy wine. Enjoy..... (3454 views)
Tasted by NotNYC on 3/23/2011: Well integrated and almost smooth as can be - yet there is this slight drying/gripping on the tongue issue that leaves me quibbling.
Only bot I have so no knowing if time heals that.

Nevertheless this disappeared in a hour and we enjoyed every drop. (3665 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 2/6/2011 & rated 92 points: Big ripe dark fruit and smokey oak nose. Sweet/tart cherry, and blueberry initially with white pepper and smoke dominating mid palate. medium plus finish with some heat. Not a finesse wine but good stuff. (3857 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 1/15/2011 & rated 90 points: Earthy, smooth ready to drink. (3894 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 11/8/2010: OC Poker VIII; 11/6/2010-11/8/2010 (WCC - Irvine CA): Blind - WOTN for a few of us in a big grenache lineup.

This wine has it all, the nose, bright fruit, long finish. You'll never confuse it for a CdP, it's new world all the way (4818 views)

2007 McPrice Myers L'Ange Rouge

2007 L’Ange Rouge

92% Grenache, 4% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre
575 cases produced
18 month in French and Hungarian Oak,
10% new
Aging Potential: 6-10 years Larner Vineyard and Alta Mesa Vineyard:

Larner Vineyard in Ballard Canyon’s western-most reaches is influenced by coastal breezes and evening fog, making it one of the coolest sites in the Santa Ynez Valley. Peerless farming, excellent (for grape growing) soil, and the attention to detail given at this great site produce truly amazing fruit. Alta Mesa Vineyard’s Mourvedre and Grenache grow on decomposed granite, gneiss, schist, basalt and clay loam at 3200 feet above sea level. Superb clonal selection, tight spacing, huge day/night temperature differentials and meticulous vineyard work produce grapes that yield vibrant, complex and compelling wines.

Winemaking:
The components of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre were fermented in small open top bins, with 50% whole clusters included, The wine spent 30-35 days on the skins with a combination of pump-overs and punch downs. Aged 18 months in a combination of 500 liter barrels and 265 liter barriques, bottled unfined and unfiltered

Keywords:
Crush raspberry, red currant, sweet strawberry jam, rose petal, fresh tobacco, minty chocolate, cranberry, cocoa powder, limestone, brambly sage, round, integrated, long, layered, textural.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
