Tasted by biggie on 12/31/2023 & rated 94 points: Fruit Day - Cork sound. Decanted off a tablespoon of sediment and more was stuck to the side of the bottle making decanting a bit more challenging. Fully mature with browning core and edges but still showing dark red as well. Nose is elegant and full with red flowers, damp earth, dried herbs, and even some graphite. On the palate it has a bit of a Bordeaux character overlaid with ripe dark fruit, tobacco and herbs. The finish is long with the fruit, tobacco and some spice intermixed. A stellar bottle.  Tasted by wineough on 12/1/2022 & rated 91 points: Brief leather blew off, black and blue fruits still fresh, silky tannins aging well (799 views)
Tasted by WineGuyX on 2/8/2021 & rated 92 points: Still retaining a youthful color, dark and purplish. Beautiful nose of spring flowers, hot rocks, black and blue fruits, toasty oak and spice. Medium-full bodied, this is in a wonderful place. Still youthful and loaded with sweet black fruits, spice galore, great acidity and a solid backbone of tannin. This is great now and should last several more years with ease. Drink now-2027 92 (1469 views)
Tasted by dke on 12/27/2020 & rated 90 points: This was tasty and well integrated, in good drinking window, little leftover of smokey oak but not over-powering 89-90 (1538 views)
Tasted by Vinophil2000 on 4/16/2019 & rated 91 points: siehe Aufzeichnug von 2017.
Tasted by prufrocksabogado on 9/9/2018 & rated 92 points: Terrific and at its peak. The 2005s from the regio. have all rewarded patience and this is no exception. Still plenty of fruit and power. (2742 views)
Tasted by WineGuyX on 5/13/2018 & rated 91 points: Modest aromas of brooding black fruits, spice and oak (mint and vanilla). Medium-bodied, dry, medium-high acidity and quite tannic. Nice texture, but could use a bit more stuffing and sweetness. This should be excellent at the table. Interesting flavors of new wood, black fruits, spice and licorice. Moderately long aftertaste. This has aged reasonably well and doesn't show any evidence of the Brett I was concerned with at release. 91 (2647 views)
Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 3/19/2018: Last bottle of 5. Just to stick it in my face, it read quite firm and concentrated and youthful to tell me it should have been allowed to sleep some more years. Nice purity and savor. Quite enjoyable. (2377 views)
Tasted by Vinophil2000 on 12/24/2017 & rated 91 points: Dunkle Frucht, Würze, hoher Alkohol (14 % Vol.). Wuchtig.

(2356 views)
Tasted by tim m on 11/16/2017 & rated 91 points: This was really nice forest night, a bit jammy on night three. Nice qpr on this. Definite buy again. (2105 views)
Tasted by ABM on 10/17/2017 & rated 91 points: Excellent wine. probably at its peak. Velvety smooth, rich body. Will try to find more! (1812 views)
Tasted by chifred on 7/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Cork failed. Decanted, RT. Very nice - earth, cocoa, savory with just hint of fruit left on palate although still there on nose. Smooth medium weight with easy tannins and long finish. Still evolving. (1943 views)
(2562 views)
Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 2/6/2017: Still good freshness to keep aging, and in a very good spot as expected. But the profile is markedly more savory with a bit less fruit than it showed 15 months ago. (2475 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 11/13/2016 & rated 94 points: Garnet red hue. Tart cherry/raspberry nose, cinnamon, spice. Drinking very nicely well strutted/balanced, easy to drink with or with out food, mellow, medium bodied, spice. Terrific! (2779 views)
Tasted by kosmik on 10/30/2016 & rated 90 points: Superbe tenue dans le temps.
En phase secondaire.
Encore quelques années devant.
Excellent RQP. (2783 views)
Tasted by johnnyo on 7/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Amazing QPR! Delicious RdD! (2743 views)
Tasted by brooklynJ&O on 6/14/2016 & rated 92 points: seriously good. primary fruit gone. secondary flavors in perfect harmony. (this was day 3) (2350 views)
Tasted by DRK III on 5/30/2016 & rated 89 points: Dense, ripe fruit. Plenty of American oak vanilla. The sweetness makes it only slightly off balance. Tannins tease with astringency. The color is almost black with very little fading out to the rim. Full bodied. The alcohol was a bit hot for the first 30 minutes but blew off. Nice wine, but nothing special going on here. (2262 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 4/11/2016 & rated 92 points: Almost purple. Cigar box, leather and blackberry nose. When first opened it was all cherry juice. After one to two hours it developed more complexity and opened up more with additionsl savory and dark fruit flavors. Does not taste like an eleven year old wine. Went well with Split Pea soup and ham. (2480 views)
Tasted by Food Daddy on 1/7/2016 & rated 92 points: Drinking lovely. Great core of dark fruit. Modern style. (2836 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 1/1/2016 & rated 91 points: Dark wine that was decanted about 4 hours. Sweetness lessened with air but was still juicy. Some decent minerality and paired well with a stuffed tenderloin (herbs, goat cheese). Nicely balanced but lacking some complexity for me - but the food may have had something to do with that. Soft but smokey on the shortish finish. (2093 views)
Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 11/3/2015: Consistent with my note from 2 years ago... In the zone but evolving slowly. Suitable firmness and freshness to go 10 more years. (2279 views)
Tasted by chifred on 10/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Nose with blackberry, plum, cocoa. Palate with black fruit, pencil lead, spice, complex and intriguing. Silky smooth with background tannins, nice finish. Delicious. At peak I would say, certainly evolved from my 2011 tasting note but similar to bottle from 2014 (although no note). A great bottle of wine (and for $25!) - glad I have seven left! Went fine with grilled rib eye. (2084 views)
Tasted by Schönibert on 8/14/2015 & rated 90 points: Großzügig und breit angelegt bei guten Taninen und roten Früchten. Sehr einnehmender Wein. (2206 views)

Tempranillo

Varietal character (Appellation America) | TAPAS: Tempranillo Advocates, Producers and Amigos Society

Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo's aromas and flavors often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

WineAccess
The varietal is at its best in top Riojas, where oak aging is employed to generate increased complexity and harmony. From the best sites, these wines can be remarkably concentrated with great aging potential. New wines from this region are darker, and more robust, with more dynamic primary fruit flavors than traditionally styled examples. These wines seem to reflect the influence of Spain's other key region for Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero. Regardless of style, Riojas tend to be medium bodied wines, with more acid than tannins. These wines generally feature Tempranillo blended with Garancha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. For these wines, there are three quality levels, which will appear on the label. Everyday drinking wines fall under the category of "Crianza", "Reserva" denotes more complex and concentrated wines, and "Gran Reserva" refers to the most intense wines, made only in the best years.

The same labeling scheme applies to wines from Ribera del Duero, which, like Rioja, is dominated by Tempranillo and shares similar blending grapes. Again, Ribera del Duero wines are generally darker and more powerful than the most traditional Riojas. These wines also generally see less oak treatment than Riojas. From Rioja, we like wines from Allende, Marqués de Cáceres, Montecillo, and Cune. In Ribera del Duero, consider Dominio de Pingus, Emilio Moro, Convento San Francisco, and Pesquera.
Pair older-style Rioja with simple meats like chicken, leg of lamb, and pork loin. However, the newer style of Rioja and Ribera del Duero works especially well with bolder meat dishes or an aged Spanish cheese like Manchego or Idiazabal.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
