Tasted by El_Dougo on 2/2/2022 & rated 90 points: PNP. Medium body. Red fruit. Most notable was tannins totally dissolved making for easy drinking but wish there was a little more bite to it. Definitely peaked but enjoyable. (700 views)
Tasted by Lyubomir Lefterov on 11/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Bought from the ''Castello'' an year ago as ''ready for drinking'', this was presented to me as a 'reserva' while it is not stated on the label as such !?
Decanted and ready for drinking immediatelly, soft with resolved tannins, dark sour cherries mixed with forest aromas and a bit of smoke. This is such sn easy driniking Chianti. Medium bodied with medium intensity and estate benchmark - balance. It will not blow you away but will charm you with peace. (1536 views)
Tasted by LotionInTheBasket on 3/23/2018 & rated 88 points: Brick red, showing some age at the rim, with good legs. On the nose, blackberry, cherry, wet earth, grape jollyrancher, a little smokey, light florals, arugula. It took about 5 hours for the nose to develop, and its pretty pleasant. Tart blackberry, black cherry-turn-cranberry, rhubarb tart, tobacco. Mid palate feels like a smooth sandpaper of tannin, light grip with medium (-) acidity. The finish is all the same, with the tannins leading the way to a shorter than I'd like finish. Had it without food, might have been better with. (2055 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 9/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind. Free&Easy night at ESBK.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, soy sauce, sweet toasty spices, red plum, sour red cherries, hints of barnyard earth. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), smooth resolved medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, soy sauce, red plums, sour red cherries, sweet toasty spices. Medium finish.
Very good quality Chianti Classico. Aged for 12 months in barriques. Finish could be better though. Time to drink up, not for further ageing. (3368 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 6/1/2016: No formal note. Moderate intensity, red fruited, sour red cherry, touch of florals, some nice leathery development, soft tannins, fresh acidity, falls away a touch on the medium length finish. Very good but time to drink up. *** (3397 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 12/18/2015: Cork barely tinged. Heady savory aromas. Pretty, fairly transparent red. Supple texture, with smooth tannins announcing themselves at the end. Amazing fruit level. Couldn't believe how little I paid for this bottle, so an amazing bargain compared to what's in the bottle. (3126 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 11/5/2015 & rated 86 points: Over the hill. Not much left to say, and what's left is not very interesting. (2533 views)
Tasted by GFischer on 10/14/2013 & rated 90 points: In the nose full ripe dark cherries, ripe plums, black currant, nicely balanced, well integrated acidity supporting the berry fruit. On the palate again dark fruits, soft, well balanced, still tannins. Finish medium length, nice. Still can mature a few more years. (4309 views)
Tasted by Raimi01 on 7/22/2012: Mit Lucia und Papi getrunken war sehr gut (4142 views)
Tasted by ersmith on 5/20/2012 & rated 91 points: Just starting to show a hint of age. Clear deep ruby color with cherry and roses on the nose. This is a light yet full flavored chianti. Cherry, plum and rhubarb flavors. Medium finish. Excellent wine that will continue to be enjoyed for another decade. (4106 views)
Tasted by lars.moeberg on 3/4/2012 & rated 88 points: Appearance: Garnet, clear, curtains, brownish rim, 5 points.
Aromas: 1. day: leather, citrus peel. 2. day: minerals, mushrooms. intriguing! 11 points.
Palate: 1. day: ripe fruit, good texture, bit of barnyard. 2. day: less structure, lot more barnyard. 14 points.
Overall: A delicate an interesting wine - complexity is high - could wish for more power and structure, 8 points. (3814 views)
Tasted by leighhunt on 1/17/2012 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Just what I'm looking for in a good chianti. Acidity is in the forefront, fruit is much more subtle. Great food wine! (4272 views)
Tasted by tkoby11 on 10/9/2011 & rated 91 points: Classic Chianti, though slightly more modern in its depth and concentration.

Color: Deep garnet purple with deep red edges.

Nose: Black currrants, cherries, subtle cedar, flowers, orange peel, and tobacco.

Palate: Exceptional and what Chianti should be texturally. The fruit was in balanced and in perfect harmony with the acidity and tannin. Cherry, blackberry, cedar, and superb minerality

Well done, consistently delivering along with more other faves Felsina and Fonotdi. (3101 views)
Tasted by TheWineMonkey on 7/2/2011 & rated 89 points: The colour is a medium ruby-garnet, there is a slight indication of aging. On the nose medium intensity sour cherry with a hint of game. On the palate there is sweet concentrated cherry but with good acidity and soft mild tannins. A good length. (2558 views)
Tasted by dedrislee on 6/14/2011 & rated 90 points: Aromatic nose bouquet of warm cherries, vanilla, with earth, mineral and Tuscan undergrowth. On the palate, balances of concentration of fruits, blackcurrants, cocoa, young oak, acid, dry velvet finish with less fruits than previous year 2004, tannin present. Future tasting may improve rating. (2738 views)
Tasted by ikileo on 5/15/2011: Florence & Tuscan Holiday; 5/9/2011-5/16/2011 (Florence & Tuscany): No formal notes. Popped and poured, decanted for half an hour. Drank over an hour.

Overall a well made wine, but did not meet my expectations especially after visiting the winery and tasting their 07 efforts. Good depth of flavour and balance but lacked the concentration of the '07. But lots of aromatics and layers of flavours on the palate. Other than the mixture of fruit, there was a good mix of wild herbs and bell peppers. Oak was kept in check quite well. (4085 views)
Tasted by Haut Brion on 12/24/2010: ***.5 (3530 views)
Tasted by vumansky on 9/11/2010 & rated 89 points: Ruby bordering on garnett color. Light to medium nose of cherry, plum, mushroom, and earth. High acidity and tannin with earthy and black cherry notes. Long finish. Very good chianti that is ready to drink... would go well with acidic tomato based dishes. (3552 views)
Tasted by rlleigh on 9/3/2010 & rated 88 points: good, but not exceptional (3414 views)
Tasted by fraundor on 8/21/2010 & rated 92 points: kurz nach dem öffnen noch verhalten, nach 24h? - siehe heute (3787 views)
Tasted by tkoby11 on 8/15/2010 & rated 88 points: Tight upon opening, but opened up with some time. Tannins and acid very prevalent with fruit in the background. The nose is a nice medley of berry and cherry fruit, with some sweet tobacco and earth notes. The palate was firm and tight with gripping tannins, less generous on the palate with the fruit. (3521 views)
Tasted by xboomer on 4/26/2010 & rated 88 points: Good, but not that good. Little weak on flavor and body. It needs pasta. (3797 views)
Tasted by Vinacull on 4/10/2010 & rated 87 points: {ST} Decanted, time <1hr. Color garnet with some brick orange and black hues, medium body. A pretty bouquet, with bright sour cherry and berries, some rose petal, smoke, and tobacco leaf. On the palate a mixture of tart red berries and mildly sweet cherries adding some richness, a little floral, and some earth notes. Medium-high acid. The depth of fruit is quite light, and the finish is shorter than expected, which was disappointing given this supposedly has the estate's top grade fruit blended in for this vintage. Described as youthful at this stage, but I did not find the tannins to be green or forbidding. Overall pleasant and with a sense of elegance. I would buy this if it were 15, but unfortunately the price is twice that, so pass for me. (3754 views)
Tasted by Darkhorn on 3/28/2010 & rated 89 points: Nice dark fruits and a bit of wood on the nose.. this had great balance and had a silky mouthfeel. (3845 views)
Tasted by ny pete on 1/2/2010 & rated 84 points: meh ... weak aromatics ... rather thin on the palate ...very tannic finish ... for my money, frescobaldi makes a better chianti. (4127 views)

Sommelier Journal, August 2008
(Castello di Ama Chianti Classico) This blend of approximately 80% Sangiovese, 8% Canaiolo, and 12% Malvasia Nera and Merlot is aged in barriques, 20% new and the remainder 1 to 3 years old. The wine captivates immediately with a direct hit of pure Morello cherry, followed by fennel, anise, basil, thyme, verbena, stewed meats, leather, and chalk. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with a dense core of ripe Morello cherry followed by subtle, earthy, barnyard notes, leather, and chalk. The silky mouthfeel is balanced by persistent acidity and cleansing fruit tannins. The oak tannins are gentle, and the finish is extremely long. Special Report: Chianti Classico

Castello di Ama

Producer website
Location on Google Map

Castello di Ama’s 65.38 hectares of specialised vineyards, officially enrolled in the Chianti Classico Register, are located at elevations between 390 and 530 metres in calcareous-clay, pebble-rich soils.
Part of the vineyards were planted between 1974 and 1978, at an average density of 3,000 vines per hectare, while newer plantings at a density of 5,300 vines per hectare, starting in 1996 and continuing to the present date, replace the outdated vineyards.
The vines are vertically trained, to the open lyre pruned to the Guyot system, and to spurred cordon.
The varieties, grafted onto rootstock 420, are 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
