Community Tasting Notes (average 94.6 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 679 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mleh on 4/27/2024 & rated 93 points: Drank this with an 05 Pegau. Improved after about an hour of air in the bottle. Lovely nose of dark cherries, some savory notes and a little funk. Beautifully smooth mouthfeel compared to the more rustic Pegau. Palette of cherries, some savory notes, earth and iron. Really lovely CNdP, hard to pick which one we liked best between this and the Pegau. (507 views)
Tasted by vr.bart on 3/31/2024 & rated 97 points: This was my last bottle, I decided to open this relatively soon after my previous bottle as that one was already starting to go over the hill. However this bottle was excellent! Really good. Sure it had some tertiairy characteristics but it was still perfectly balanced. Perfectly integrated alcohol (15%!). My advice would be though to start drinking these up. They will not be improving anymore but these will still give a lot of pleasure right now. (1633 views)
Tasted by boillatm on 3/31/2024: Well. I opened the bottle around 30 minutes before taking a first sip. As it tasted like a hot mess, I decided to give the wine a bit more time.
30 minutes after, it got a bit better (and bitter) and tasted like a correct mature CDP. That said, this wasn't a wow wine by any measure. Had I not known the pedigree of this wine, I would have rated this bottle miserably (also in contrat with the pleasure I had drinking the 2006 from this producer a couple of years ago). As I am not a very refined taster, I will abstain from putting a rating. But for me clearly a big disappointment (1437 views)
Tasted by Beeck10 on 3/24/2024 & rated 98 points: Well, what a wine, but especially those like me who were lucky enough to buy this wine when it came out at 27 euros a bottle probably made the deal of their lives! I took the wine to a restaurant and they probably didn't have the best glasses to check it, hence my 98 out of 100! Especially since I enjoy the aroma more than the taste!

Tasted by etyc on 3/13/2024: Not a bad showing... but on this night/evening, I'd placed this behind the '10 Ferme du Mont... (1939 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 2/29/2024 & rated 96 points: Deep color. Black cherries, black raspberries, currants, licorice and hints of floral and earthiness in the nose. Blackberries, black cherries, raspberries and black currants with hints of herbalness in the flavor. An elegant wine, rich and complex. It is very well balanced, full bodied, great structure, and a long finish. Plenty of time left in this bottle. Delicious! (2354 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 2/29/2024: I like it. (Edit)
97 points

1/30/2018 Wow! Rich concentrated fruit in the nose and flavor, black raspberries, black cherries, blackberries, figs, licorice, earthiness, and some floral and herbaceousness. Very complex wine, full bodied, great structure, and a long finish. Decanted four hours. 96/97 (2011 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 2/8/2024 & rated 98 points: Out of double magnum double decanted for 5 hours.
Wow. It almost has everything. Lovely nose, mouth feel. Tannins fruit fully integrated. Like velvet. Wonderful wine. Why not higher? Maybe length and secondary flavors do not match the rest of the wine’s characteristics? (3227 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 2/7/2024 & rated 100 points: Guest somm with a work colleague for the evening - supplied wine from our cellars for a work dinner (Pro Bono, Palo Alto CA): We had a large enough group to warrant opening of a 3L. Bottle in my cellar from around 2010. Decanted about 3 hours prior to drinking. Had a bottle of this vintage a month ago so I knew it needed it. Drank this after a 2015 St Prefert.

From prior notes: "Dark garnet color, mild thinning. Nose showing dark red fruits, kirsch liqueur, baking spice. Intense palate showing, black raspberry, earth, garrigue, smoked meat, baking spices (clove and cinnamon prominent). Spice and sweet red fruits, raspberry through the mid and back palate. Full body, long finish."

Notes are consistent as tasting was recent. My prior tasting of this wine was a month ago, first experience with the 07 vintage. This showing was even better than the last bottle - we drank this over an hour+, the wine continued to improve in the glass.

This is a good as it gets for CdP, hitting all the notes, perfect texture, weight and length. I am giving it 100 points (up from 98) as the expression of CdP is as true as it gets...

WOTN for most against some tough competition! (2637 views)
Tasted by Melli on 1/12/2024: The CDP was matched against the 2007 SQN extended age Grenache. Bottle was flawed in sense of excessive VA. The SQN was perfection!! (3079 views)
Tasted by Brevetti on 12/30/2023 & rated 98 points: Stunning wine, perfectly mature. Kirsh notes with leather. All Châteauneuf-du-Pape should be like this one... (2468 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 12/22/2023 & rated 96 points: From magnum and just outstanding. Just beginning to get some tertiary characteristics. Still good earth notes and purity of grenache. (2423 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 12/16/2023 & rated 98 points: In New Hope, guests Eric and Sarah (and Tripp) for dinner. Decanted for 2.5 hours prior to dinner, paired with Delmonico steaks w/my Chimicurri sauce, house roasted potatoes, asparagus... First tasting of the 07s from my cellar.

Dark garnet color, mild thinning. Nose showing dark red fruits, kirsch liqueur, baking spice. Intense palate showing, black raspberry, earth, garrigue, smoked meat, baking spices (clove and cinnamon prominent). Spice and sweet red fruits, raspberry through the mid and back palate. Full body, long finish.

The 07 vintage was warm, creating wines Parker praised but others deemed as overripe or off. Maybe a stylistic preference at release, 16 years later this wine was not lacking for anything on this showing. Hitting all the classic CdP and Grenache notes. The decant here makes a huge difference in depth and expression - this bottle was tight when first opened. As good as it gets...crowd loved it (2613 views)
Tasted by vr.bart on 12/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Needed lots of decanting to come together into a nice wine. (2467 views)

Tasted by grub94 on 11/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Classic grenache led CdP. Dark red berries, cassis, leather, wet stones, baking spice on nose and palate. Still some firm, tannins to resolve the fruit and generate more tertiary qualities. Should have bought a case of these mags! Sadly, all gone now. (2241 views)
Tasted by chatters on 11/22/2023: First Wednesday Wine Club Rhone Dinner (One Penny Red, Summer Hill): Savoury, rich, ripe, dense, concentrated, alcohol prickle, baked green notes, very slight almost Brett, menthol. Thick, dark hued fruits, farmyard, almost drinkable for me. (2072 views)
Tasted by wsammons on 11/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Very primary; also sharp. Still will need time. Lots of potential in ~3-5 years (2202 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 11/3/2023 & rated 91 points: Three vintages of Clos des Papes side by side. The 1976 (86pts) has seen better days and this bottle was long past peak. Beside some shy notes of fruit and some faint tobacco and earthy notes, there is not much there. The 2007 (91pts) showed well, one of the better bottles I‘ve had as it was not completely cooked and overripe. Nice complexity and precision but still a bit too much on every level. The 2016 (93pts) was the best of the three. This bottle showed some of the intricate fresh blue and black forest fruit this vintage showed a few years ago, a nice minerality is there too. The acidity is on a good level but sadly there are some alcohol notes too. The 2016s were best right after bottling. (2888 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/29/2023 & rated 95 points: Medium dark red color with a clear 2mm edge. PNP, from 375ml; split bottle over 2 hours. Intriguing and complex nose offering a melange of dried earth and pencil, cherry, vanillin, blackberry, fresh roadside garrigue, and dark chocolate and Asian spices. The palate is ripe with a true cornucopia of black and blue infused fruits; kirsch, black raspberry, cassis, blackberry, plum, framboise, Asian spices, black licorice, with plenty of spicy garrigue notes on the long sensual finish. This has a lot of fruit and power, though it didn't seem jammy, and the alcohol was well contained. I really like the texture and layering here as well. This has been a bit of an enigma wine, and I wondered where this might go over time. My last bottle was 3 years ago. For now it appears to be getting better. 94+ to 95pts. (2734 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 10/8/2023 & rated 93 points: Terrific CNdP nose. The spice cabinet is wide open. Cinnamon, star anise, etc. Second half of the bottle feels more unfocused and muddled. Not sure if I should wait on remaining bottles or drink up (2664 views)
Tasted by Caruso on 10/1/2023 & rated 100 points: Ruby with minimal lightening in thin layers. No decant. Needs some minutes after pouring to unmute, but then delivers intense notes of kirsch liqueur, different spicy notes, damp earth and flowers. On the palate highly concentrated and intense with a chord of kirsch brandy dominated fruit, some notes of forest floor, incense and licorice. Long fading finish. As concentrated as it is and even if the first sip seems a bit too much, it is not heavy or overdone at all. Nevertheless something I don't want to drink in summer. 5/15/20/10. -2030+ if perfectly stored since release. (2780 views)
Tasted by ClaytonDave on 8/26/2023 & rated 99 points: Amazing wine. Focused, intense but not heavy. Kirsch and raspberry, plus multiple other classic CDP notes. Brief decant is all it needs. Ready now. (3246 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 8/4/2023 & rated 98 points: An outstanding wine! Notes of cassis, black raspberry, plum, with notes of damp earth and minerals. An opulent wine with a velvety mouthfeel and long satisfying finish. Paired with grilled lamb chops. This vintage is probably just as good, if not a tad better, than the 2005. (3407 views)

Sommelier Journal, December 2009
(Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône Valley, France) Clos des Papes is a traditional estate that has been producing wine in the region for more than 200 years. Although proprietor Paul Avril died this year, his son Vincent carries on his legacy. Refusing to create a special cuvée, as many of their competitors in the region have done, the Avrils produce a delicious Grenache-based wine aged in large wood foudres. The 2007, from a forward, ripe, and rich vintage, is full-bodied, with kirsch, licorice, and blackberry flavors; a lush, supple texture; and a long, balanced finish. Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
