Tasted by juneau bob on 9/25/2013: Nice bottle of wine, a bit oaky initially, but toned down a day later, medium body and smooth finish. (1842 views)
Tasted by juneau bob on 12/10/2012: Easy quaffer, medium body, finish a little hot (2165 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 10/31/2010 & rated 85 points: This is a nice Merlot. It has some fig and black fruit on the front, some minerals, spice on the mid-palate and finishes with some smokey oak. It's a B wine. (3136 views)
Tasted by mdaniel on 4/9/2010 & rated 70 points: I've now had this and the SB from this producer and they are both horrible. While the SB was some what drinkable, this merlot went down the drain. I wouldn't even cook with this. There was nothing pleasing about this wine at all. This will be a producer I skip from now on, no matter how much the price may be lowered. (3258 views)
Tasted by cainpa on 3/21/2010: Night one: very tannic, but thought it might improve with time. Night two: the unpleasant taste of this wine appeared. Bought this for $10 at PA Wine & Spirits and thought it might be good QPR--wrong. Will avoid repeating this experience. (3333 views)
Tasted by alandf on 4/5/2009 & rated 88 points: Sorta tart, with cherry. Then, some earthy notes on the finish. Interesting and quaffable. (1947 views)
Tasted by Lainie on 11/7/2008 & rated 89 points: Restrained, well balanced CA merlot, with a menthol/wintergreen finish. Oak is a bit out of joint but could be better with a couple of years age. (1740 views)

Souverain

Producer website
As described on the history page, this winery has variously been referred to as Souverain, Souverain of Rutherford and Chateau Souverain. They are ALL the same winery making the same wines, so on CellarTracker we have standardized on just Souverain.

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
