| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by theRealPepe on 1/12/2018 & rated 90 points: Dark blood red color. Nose is very hot along with leather and Madeira. Leather, meat, tar, olive and red fruit. Big wine. Noticed tobacco notes too, almost Bordeaux-like, even though Syrah! Excellent. (534 views) | | Tasted by creativ1 on 2/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Nice blend of spice and fruit, very smooth finish. (853 views) | | Tasted by Toolsalesman on 5/24/2013 & rated 91 points: I love this wine! I'm a big fan of D&G for lots of reasons and this is just one of many. Really good, strong nose, strong finish. At 7 years it could go for several more. Kinda wished I'd waited cause I think in the future it will be even better. (1382 views) | | Tasted by theRealPepe on 3/12/2013: First of three. Mostly primary syrah with some secondary flavors trying to peek out. I want my other two to sit a few more years. Excellent. (1324 views) | | Tasted by sethomps on 2/5/2012 & rated 86 points: Nose is lacking. Smooth dark fruit. Leather, a hint of cedar but not overly smokey. Black cherries, blackberries, and strong tannins, yet balanced. Not sure it's worth $40, but fun to try. (1868 views) | | Tasted by JenXH on 1/7/2012 & rated 88 points: Dark, rich pour. Sour fruit, flowers & eucalyptus on the nose. Very spicy & peppery wine. Good balance, sweet & sour fruit, prunes, raisin, blackberry. A little spendy, not my favorite for $29 range but very good. (1698 views) | | Tasted by fultonjf on 10/25/2011 & rated 91 points: Nothing to add to the notes. Great balance of power and elegance. Will be good for years (2003 views) | | Tasted by wineshlub on 5/1/2011 & rated 92 points: Opened two hours ahead of time. Rich aromas of cassis, cedar and pepper. Intense cassis/blacberry flavors dominate, with a mildly hot black pepper finish.
I did check this when I opened it and oddly enough it was quite forward at that point. Two hours later it showed some of the tightness alluded to in other notes, though it was still a pleasure to drink. Not much to add to the previous comments, this shows a classic Northern Rhone profile, with both power and grace. It is drinking quite well right now but will almost certainly reward patience. (1474 views) | | Tasted by bradleymay on 4/13/2011: This syrah continued to get better over the 3 hours it was opened. (1517 views) | | Tasted by Barstool on 12/13/2009: Winery Tasting Notes: "The color is deep blue-violet. The wine possesses an expressive nose of pencil lead, anise, underbrush and leather accenting black and blue berry fruit. The palate on this pure and impressively concentrated Syrah offers impressive muscle and depth with lively acidity and long and silky tannins that coat the mouth for a lush finish." (1586 views) | | Tasted by mrfroopy on 11/11/2009 & rated 92 points: This is a tight young wonderful elegant wine. The wine is very reminiscent of a northern Rhone with some Cali power. The elegance belies the grip. this wine was singing by day 3 open, so it leads me to believe that it will be drinking its best in 3-11 years. If you are going to drink it now,,,decant. There is a lot going on here with black fruit, leaf, great ripe tannin and great acidic lift. (1903 views) |

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. Vieilles Vignes Old Vine/Vieilles Vignes (Wikipedia)USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson North CoastThe North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties.
