Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by TexasBob on 9/15/2013 & rated 91 points: Lost detailed notes, but I remember it is drinking strong. (3134 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 3/9/2013 & rated 90 points: Went through the most change over the course of the night. Started showing tart power without any real depth; eventually revealing interesting rock and fruit flavors that paired well with inferno pepperoni pizza. (3315 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 3/26/2012 & rated 88 points: Gentle? Or passive aggressive? Again ripe berry with plum, pepper, and eastern spice, this is well-made and commendable; but the jury's out on whether I can find a spot in my own heart for it. Did not sing with spaghetti, marinara, and pork meatballs. (3922 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 3/19/2012 & rated 91 points: Gentle, with a quiet presence, and plenty appealing, with significant ripeness, plum and prune, and hints of eastern spices. Welcoming enough to work with both flank steak and miso-grilled cod. Drink one soon and check on these frequently. (3939 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 3/11/2012 & rated 92 points: Good and I would drink now on this wine. Floral, pepper, raspberry, blueberries and cedar. Medium finish and a bit gritty. (3772 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 3/3/2012 & rated 91 points: Mpls Wine Club: Worldwide Syrah/Shiraz (Tracy's): Very dark red/purple color. Pop and pour. Drank 1 glass over 1.5 hours. Nose is very floral, cedar, oak, pepper, eucalyptus, cassis, mineral. This improves significantly in the glass over an hour, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, spice, eucalyptus, marked pepper on the finish. this showed a bit of heat and a little too much acid initially, but that resolved. This ended up being my and group #3 WOTN. (1745 views)
Tasted by MLwine on 1/16/2012 & rated 87 points: A little flabby and almost prune flavored. Still enjoyable, but not worth holding onto. Drink up quickly. (1238 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 4/18/2011 & rated 90 points: Beautiful gumdrop nose with spicy licorice and complexity of fruit; repeats on the palate. Good density but soft and fleshy. (1643 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 4/2/2011 & rated 91 points: Aussie night with friends (Sarah & Randy's): Popped & poured by our hosts. Deep garnet color. Opens with floral qualities, then red fruit, plum and pepper. Starts out with a hollowness on the midpalate, but it gains significant weight as it opens. Flavors of plum and red fruit, oaky spice and florals. Be sure to give this a bit of air before tasting. (2089 views)
Tasted by EyeDoc on 6/12/2010 & rated 93 points: Tremendous fruit and mouthfeel - drinking great now. (1821 views)
Tasted by kenv on 2/6/2010 & rated 91 points: Big rich brawny without being overbearing or alcoholic. Harmonious in the mouth with good acidity, ripe fruit, and a medium finish of raspberries, plums, and dark chocolate. May mellow over the next few years, but probably won't get much better. (1936 views)
Tasted by MLwine on 7/2/2009 & rated 91 points: Pleasant and surprisingly smooth and rich shiraz. Not complex, but easy to drink without being over the top. (2054 views)
Tasted by cfetter on 12/31/2008 & rated 92 points: Fantastic. Rich and smooth. Second of the night to Bethany GR6 1998 Shiraz. (2148 views)
Tasted by EyeDoc on 7/20/2008 & rated 94 points: Wow - powerful without being overwhelming. A great example of what a aussie shiraz should taste like. Not syrupy or portlike - not too much alcohol. If you don't like this then you just need to drink Cote du Rhone and forget about Aussies. (2284 views)
Tasted by rmodak on 4/19/2008 & rated 89 points: Lots of menthol, blackberry, clove and a meaty note. The texture is crisp and a bit hot with fine tannins. Not a creamy wine, but does well with food. (2314 views)
Tasted by E on 1/19/2008 & rated 89 points: Not a big big shiraz....no problem with the oak(well integrated)....like that curry note. (2524 views)
Tasted by E on 12/7/2007 & rated 89 points: Interesting nose with bit of curry, faded black pepper...a bit uninteresting on the palate.... (2529 views)
Tasted by parathesis on 7/27/2007 & rated 92 points: Very nice. Not as much oak in this bottle. The wife liked it as well. (2572 views)
Tasted by parathesis on 5/23/2007 & rated 92 points: Nice Aussie Shiraz needs a little more time. Little heavy on the oak, lots of vanilla that goes well with the spicy fruit. Well balanced. Will wait a little longer before I drink it again. This was a great QPR at $25. (2711 views)
Tasted by winekahuna on 3/31/2006 & rated 92 points: Classic aussie, still needs a few more years. is remeniscent of the 1998 dead arm. (3530 views)
Tasted by Moorese on 3/31/2006 & rated 84 points: I want very much to like this wine. I am not sure that I do. When I popped the bottle, I could smell overwhelming oak from the cork alone. An hour later, I returned to see if perhaps the intense fake vanilla notes had subsided. The nose screams cherries jubilee, confectioner's sugar, and sourmash whiskey. The vanilla beans note is as pervasive as in many single barrel bourbons. Underneath this somewhat oppresive nose is a nice mouthful of spicy fruit, resplendent with the typical lush shiraz blackberry notes and pepper. There are gripping tannins competing with the fleshy fruit, but the wood simply dominates all right now. The wine finishes fairly long; but ultimately, all i can think of is how disappointing it is that a wine made from what I perceive to be spectacular fruit can be so undermined by heavy-handed oak treatment (and I like oak). While this wasn't an extremely pricey bottle ( I think it was in the neighborhood of $40-$50), it was highly regarded by our esteemed host and isn't that easy to stumble across on a shelf. I'll sit on my remaining bottles for a while in hopes that the whole damn thing settles down a bit, and it very well might. I freely admit to being somewhat of a novice in ascertaining how well (or poorly) a wine will age. Nevertheless, I'm not optimistic for the Gibson, and I genuinely hope I am wrong. (3476 views)
Tasted by TABauer on 9/9/2005 & rated 90 points: Solid Shiraz. Nice Price Would purchase again. (3589 views)
Tasted by Thilo on 6/30/2005 & rated 92 points: Inky purple color...a glass stainer. Nose of blackberry, blueberry, bramble, and a hint of tar. On the palate, thick blackberry and spice framed by tannins and a significant amount of acidity. Should settle down nicely over the next few years. Very big, but not out of balance. (3717 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 2/26/2005: Tasted February 26, 2005 at an offline at Quails Inn Dinner House in San Marcos, CA so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately without decanting in Lenox Tuscany Bordeaux glasses. Color not noted. Huge Aussie nose of blueberries. Over the top flavors of blueberries and as my buddy said “brown sugar”. If you like those Robert Parker turbo charged Aussie wines this one is your ticket. I’m passing for my palate. Drink at your leisure over the next several years. (3355 views)

ROB GIBSON

Rob began his wine interest in New Zealand during a working holiday in 1974 working for Penfolds in Auckland. When he returned to Australia during the vintage of 1975 he worked in the Penfolds Cellar as a crusher operator and assistant in the red wine fermenters. IThis commenced a long and fruitful career over 22 years under Penfolds tutillage. In 1979 Rob was offered a Penfolds Wines Traineeship to study winemaking and viticulture at Roseworthy College by the Management at the time which included the legendary Max Schubert. Rob completed his winemaking studies between 1979 and 1981.

In 1981 and 1982 The Chief winemaker formulated a viticulture project aimed at selecting the very best quality Shiraz grapes for Grange Hermitage production. This ground breaking work developing new assessments and discovering new information about the production of the very best Shiraz led to the establishment of a dedicated Viticulture department. The new systems connected the vineyard block characteristics at verasion and again prior to harvest with the resultant wine characters and wine value. He led this department as group viticulturist until he left to start Gibson Barossavale Wines and his International Consultancy in 1997. This background forms a basis of the unique Gibson Winegrowing Approach.

This 22 years established Rob as a well-bred winemaker…seeing the great Penfolds wines evolve and tasting winestyles around the world as he travelled from Germany to France to Italy to Italy to South Africa and California.

ANNE GIBSON

Anne commenced her involvement in the wine industry at the beginning of 1986 when she worked in the International/Export Department at Penfolds based in Nuriootpa. For ten years the department gave her experience of dealing with international wine buyers, exporting wine and hosting guests that would visit the Penfolds Wine Group in Nuriootpa.

In 1996 Anne transfered within the company from Export Public Relations to the Red Wine Making Department where she worked as Personal Assistant to Chief Winemaker (John Duval) until 2003. This considerable experience means that Anne understands a lot about the wine community around the world. She manages the office and visitor side of Gibson Wines and you may find her at Cellar Door occasionally.
