Community Tasting Notes (average 95.3 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 466 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rhyman on 4/26/2024 & rated 94 points: Decanted for two hours. Wine is just a little past its peak but drinking really well. Did not see a color problem. Earthy flavor and some dryness. But for 34 years old I loved the balance and structure. Glad I have one left. (295 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 3/4/2024 & rated 95 points: Brought to the table tonight by Jim Aronson after a 1 hour slow ox in the bottle. Light/medium garnet in the glass. Some orange bricking noticeable as you swirl the glass, and it seemed like as it got more air over 3 hours a little more orange became evident in the glass.

Nose of smoky/meaty elements., later on a hint of....root beer and leather?

Palate of still surprisingly silky fruit, primarily black prunes, but not stewed fruit. I hate stewed fruit! HMC noted the wine had almost a Madeira-like quality to it on the palate. Maybe a bit of balsamic? Very well made and still surprisingly complex all around given its age at 34 years. The first of these I've ever had and while I'm not the biggest Syrah or CDP guy, it was quite enjoyable and certainly a treat to experience it. I was torn between a score of 94 and 95 in my notebook and did not check on CT to see what its average score was before posting this note. Good to know I'm in the ballpark as I am in no way a CDP expert. Thanks for the great experience with this bottle, Jim! (2226 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 3/3/2024 & rated 97 points: blind
Finally I got a great 1990 Chapelle. At his peak, low in fruits an tannins, but nicely balanced. Spicy . 97 (1735 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Ye Paulee (Hao Noodle): Powerful and sweet if a bit simple. 93 (3402 views)
Tasted by MpcVino on 11/4/2023 & rated 95 points: Incredible wine drinking experience. Evolved over 3 hours, hit its peak around 2 hours. Dark fruit, pomegranate, leather, pepper, eventually got blueberry, baking spice, and lots of complexity, with a long finish. Fun fun fun. (2918 views)
Tasted by jviz on 10/21/2023 & rated 95 points: Houston Northern Rhone Blowout: Last tasted a year ago, at this event, there were two bottles with a different fonts for the vintage on the label. THB, I think they were both real as the wine inside was pretty darn similar and reminiscent of my previous experience. Hard to say though. This came off as well aged but a little monochromatic.  Tasted by overkloud on 9/28/2023 & rated 95 points: In the glass the wine is still dark and youthful, which is consistent with the nose and palate. It is probably at its peak at this moment.

A very complete wine, balanced with round structure, tertiary notes mixed with black fruit, pepper and leather. It is more of a feminine wine, doesn't have the big body or depth that one may expect. (2875 views)
Tasted by unpopular on 9/10/2023 & rated 98 points: What's not to like about this wine.

Still shows power at this age, tannin is still going strong accompanied by tertiary notes of leather and a slight of tobacco box. Fruits are jammy black fruits just like they way your babushka made it. Acidity is tempered by age and lend itself beautifully to round up the overall palate

Drank with 2 friends at the Peking duck house. (2180 views)
Tasted by ricknat1 on 9/8/2023 & rated 96 points: Just keeps getting better. Totally different from the La Turque we had with same lamb the week before, not as rich but big and smooth silky and powerful it’s shocking that years had gone by since I last tasted when we were drink all the major vintages at least ice per year just getting better and showing no signs of wear. Need to do a side by side of 89/90/91 again soon (2333 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/1/2023 & rated 99 points: One of the best bottles of this I have tasted in ages provides notes of flowers, spice, earth, kirsch, blueberry, and blackberry in the perfume. Lively, rich, intense, and dense, with layers of dark, ripe, powerful, vibrant, chewy red fruits, this is really in a good spot, and if well-stored, should get even better. Drink from 2023-2050. (3510 views)
Tasted by Volleyball on 7/20/2023 & rated 95 points: Enjoyed at a nice dinner at Da Umberto alongside three vintages of Allemand Reynard: ‘11, ‘17 and ‘18.

The first of these I’ve had. Excellent, if not revelatory. It was my favorite wine of the evening, although all of my companions preferred the Reynard (2017 being the consensus).

This was was surprisingly youthful at 33 years old, with a brisk acidity bold, dark fruit flavors and prominent but soft tannins. Some tertiary flavors have emerged, but are secondary at the moment. God knows how long this will last for in the cellar. (2821 views)
Tasted by AB16 on 6/4/2023 & rated 100 points: A+. Incredible Refined and elegant (3137 views)
Tasted by TWSA on 4/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Nose: graphite, wet earth, hints of blackberry, ink, dried plum
Notes: this legendary 100 pointer is often 3-3.5x the price of a normal vintage from the same maker. Still very dark in color and doesn't show too much aging on the appearance. This wine is very intense and strong still. I think it's safe to conclude that this wine can be kept further for at least another 20 years without much problem but if I was asked the question whether this is at the right drinking window right now I would have slight doubts. I've had the chance to drink one a couple of years ago and I think it felt a little similar, still very big and almost sun kissed, colors so dark and solid I do not sense 30+ years of age in this wine at all. This goes to show how a superior vintage can create something unmatched by mediocre vintages. It would be a far stretch to say that this is not drinkable right now but I would certainly recommend another 5-7 years before trying one again. Unfortunately right now the power and concentration is a little overwhelming and there seems to be a lack of balance in it.

Tasted by LW31 on 3/18/2023: Perfect provenance. Decanted for 3 hours. Color was deep and nose was promising but the palate was short and drying and overall unevolved. None of what you’d expect from Hermitage this age. Gilman’s note is revealing about this wine. Need to try further bottles (3416 views)
Tasted by Vinolsen on 3/13/2023 & rated 96 points: Amazing fruit - a deep and clear ruby colour - good structure - pepper- blackcurrant - dried herbs. Purple in the rim- Silky, smooth - an impressive wine - especially for 1990 wine. I only wish I had more of them. (3417 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 3/4/2023: Northern Rhone-a-thon: This pours deep ruby in the glass with with significant saturated purple toward the rim. This is very ripe and heady. The nose is of prunes, figs, plums, blackberry liquor, blueberry jam, butterscotch, vanilla, and vague whisps of slate and smoke. The palate is of very ripe deep rich fruit with significant alcohol on the finish that fizzles out a tad short (13.9% shown on the label). All in all I can really understand how this is such a polarizing wine. There is quite a lot of ripeness and extract here. The fruit is very deep and rich with very little in the way of the secondary and tertiary markers you'd expect in a Northern Rhone. there was significant debate around the table about whether this is a wine in need of significant additional bottle age or whether it's showing what it is already now with little upside. I was in the latter camp. I just can't see this shedding that ripe and heady profile to become something I'd find exciting. To be fair I've once had a bottle of this I liked more, but I expect that is bottle variation, perhaps even due to the theory some have put forth around different lots sent to the UK vs the US. This bottle was a Wildman import to NY. (3680 views)
Tasted by Duce on 2/24/2023 & rated 97 points: Unbelievable fruit for a 32-year-old wine. Complex, mint and other herbs, earth, slight bacon fat. (2947 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/18/2023: Dinner with Riccardo (The Progress, San Francisco): Opened and poured, tasted blind to the vintage side by side with the 1989. Deep, even ruby without a trace of maturity; everyone identified this as the 1990 by the saturation of color alone. A transient whiff of alcohol and port, but then a multidimensional nose of dark flowers, most blue fruit, and herbs. Big wine but surprisingly light on its feet due to orange zest and excellent acidity underpinning fresh blue and dark red fruit, spice, a bit of brambliness, and round, chocolatey tannins. Continued development and improvement over 3 hours. This wine has it all, and the silky, sappy mouth feel alone is to die for. Compared to a magnum tasted last year, this was much more forthcoming and multifaceted, but that said, it still has decades to go. Amazing. (3136 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 2/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Good showing for this wine, relatively clean but meaty and enough fruit. (3130 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/17/2023: Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Spring 2023 Kick-off (Gabriel Kruether): I've often said that this is a wine that never quite shows as well as I expect it to. This though was probably the best bottle I've had of it. Again very vibrant and bright and a bit more depth of character than the '83 or the '88 and darker fruits and a hint of the sanguine and just drinking very nicely. (3444 views)
Tasted by seekingbalance on 1/12/2023 & rated 96 points: This is a monumental wine. 32 years in, and it was barely ready to drink, and clearly not ready until it had been decanted for 3+ hours. I've wanted to taste this wine for ages - I'm Rhone fan, both South and North, and four of us had our chance (we also had open the 1990 Guigal Core Rotie, which was no finesse wine either).

Early on it was impenetrable. Rubber (just like the tires stored in my garage) on the nose, green/sour notes on the nose and palette, most of the good flavors at best recessed, and tight, tight tannin. I feared it was just plain too early. Then as dinner progressed two things happened: 1) its character was dramatically altered by the beef (slow smoked rib), and then 2) it miraculously transformed. the end state wine had a gorgeous earthy, minearality and a far more delicate set of flowerly and spicy aromas. The Tannin was tamed. It was a very dark-fruited, earthy complex beauty. In my mind it rocketed past the Rotie, but then, dirt and teroir are my thing - others disagreed. Its a style and personal preference thing.

In summary yea, it's "all that", but it may take some time. Don't rush, and prepare early. Consume with a strongly flavored, relatively fatty meat. And enjoy. (2965 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/7/2022: Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Fall 2022 Intronization (Aquavit): A wine that I've never quite gotten the hype on. It is definitely good. Tonight drinking with a hint of a green note which added a bit of balance and I actually quite enjoyed. (3488 views)
Tasted by rlove on 11/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark and bloody and peppery with blackberry and dried herb. Still well structured even as the once-formidable tannins are now largely resolved. Not as perfect as a bottle three years ago and not expecting upside from here. (2928 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 11/11/2022 & rated 96 points: Still very youthful but beginning to show. Dense and well structured; I suggest that you either decant for a couple of hours or wait a couple of years. Outstanding! (2822 views)

U.S. Importer (?) (Addt'l Info)

Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the most prestigious producers in the Rhone, notably in Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage. The earliest record of the Jaboulet family producing wine is from 1834, and the eventual house of Paul Jaboulet Aîné remained in Jaboulet family ownership until 2006. It was then sold to the Frey family, proprieters of Ch La Lagune in Bordeaux, and numerous other vineyards.

Frey obtained the famous brand names such as Hermitage "La Chapelle" and Crozes Hermitage "Domaine de Thalabert", but not all of the vineyards historically used for producing those wines. Notably the vineyard used to produce Crozes Hermitage "Domaine de Thalabert" - a vineyard historically known as Les Grandes Vignes - was split, with part remaining under the control of Philippe & Vincent Jaboulet. Nevertheless Frey succeeded in restoring the reputation of Paul Jaboulet Aîné which had fallen away during the 1990s.

Domaine de Raymond Roure is a 3.5ha Crozes Hermitage vineyard high on the back of the Hermitage hill which Jaboulet acquired in 1996. The red now sells at a premium to Thalabert and is the wine for longer keeping.

Paul Jaboulet Aîné owns parcels of vines in several Rhone appellations both north and south, and produces an extensive range of both estate bottled and négociant wines.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
