Tasted by Floyd77 on 3/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Do you want to mama Jacqui a beautiful showing for this Napa Valley blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 38% Cabernet franc. On the nose, showing a hint of maturity with tobacco, cedar, and dried berries… But on the pallet, the fruit really shows with ripe cherry, spice, and smoky flavors… there are tenants that are perfectly resolved, and smooth… Chewy and sumptuous!  Tasted by ikkaariainen on 8/7/2022 & rated 92 points: I don't usually write a 2nd tasting note on a wine so soon unless there is a significant change and that is actually what has happened. This bottle is much better then the previous one drunk about a year ago and the difference is in the air - this one was opened in bottle for almost 3 hours prior to consumption and then the 1st glass was poured out for a bit more before consumption and that made all the difference. Otherwise at this point I recommend a 60-90 minute decant. With this treatment drinking very well, fully mature, quite a good QPR wine but still definitely time to drink not hold - probably slightly past prime but fruit still very solid and secondary flavors settling in. Reddish purple, peripheral bricking present, soft mouth feel, oak and tannins essentially gone, fruity somewhat acidic core present, medium bodied and with a pleasant aftertaste. Muted nose of blackberry, soysauce, kirsch and a smokey finish. Flavor profile retains classic high end Napa cab profile of dark fruit, cassis and blackberry up front with black tea, anise and soy sauce in the mid-palate and a very earthy forest floor finish.  Tasted by ikkaariainen on 8/10/2021 & rated 88 points: Decent, reasonable and utterly drinkable but clearly a bit over the hill with fruit fading fast. Drink up any holdings very soon. (2079 views)
Tasted by Gr8penut on 7/11/2021 & rated 91 points: From my posting on Instagram:

In Vino Veritas (in wine there is truth; people speak the truth when they are drunk), bottle #149-154 of my cellar sacrifices. I put together a six bottle vertical of Viader, starting with 1995 and ending with 2000, with the help of Alan and Delia Viader in filling my vertical. A friend hosted an amazing dinner for the six of us which was outstanding! Great food and 11 other bottles brought by another couple, the Viader was poured during the main course. Needless to say, we planned ahead for Uber.

A brief background on Viader- Delia Viader was born in Argentina but the best then spent lots of time in France. She graduated with a PhD from Sarbonne and moved to California as the single mother of four. She asked her dad for a loan to buy the land. He thought she was crazy because he had already paid for her degree and now she wanted to be a “farmer”. Anyway, she went on to develop many firsts in Napa, with growing vertically instead of horizontally, mixing Cab Franc with Cabernet Sauvignon, and too many to list. She is respectfully known as the “Mother of wine”.

The tasting was a huge success and it seemed no one could agree on a favorite. To me, the 2000 was my fav. Thank you Alan and Delia Viader for making this happen as we all loved these wines! 🍷🍷🍷🍷👍👍👍👍 #wine #winelover #winelovers #redblend #redblendwine #viaderwinery #viader #alanviader #deliaviader #cabernetsauvignon #cabernetfranc #napawine #napa #napavalley #napacab (1601 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 3/30/2021 & rated 91 points: At two decades plus, it is now showing vibrancy in the fruits, moreso than when young but its showing subtle signs of diminution from aging with ever-so-slight signs of opacity and rust color hues setting in with a bit of funkiness as fruits give way to non-fruit notes, mostly upon opening which burned off somewhat after an hour.

The fill level, label, foil and most importantly the cork were perfect, as if new.

Dark garnet color with hues of purple, medium full bodied, complex but nicely balanced, black cherry, black currant fruits with notes of spice, toasty oak and hints of graphite and dark mocha on the tangy crisp acid and smooth silky tannin laced finish.

Tasted by Tony Simo on 10/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted this wine for 3 hrs. Still has plenty of fruit. Tannins have softened. Beautiful color. It’s not past it’s prime but needs to be enjoyed in the next few yrs. (799 views)

Tasted by Gr8penut on 6/10/2019 & rated 93 points: Unbelievable nose, color and finish for a wine that was 22 years old! (2311 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 6/4/2019 & rated 89 points: Pnp. Old earthy nose & minimal taste at first. With air & warmth showed additional old, soft fruit. Definitely past its prime though can still be enjoyed if you DRINK NOW. It's on a downhill decline...fast I believe. (2047 views)
Tasted by cbuhlman on 3/31/2019: Magnum
1997, from my recollection was the first great year in recent Napa vintages. At 20+ years, it goes to show that well made cabernet from good terroir can rival classed Bordeaux. Saturated garnet no bricking, but a little opaque.
Very smooth, no hard edges, and still sweet and slightly herbal, with good cherry fruit with a balsamic tint on the palate and a long dusty finish. Truth be told, this wine probably peaked a good 5 years ago.
Drink up

Tasted by hadlieh2 on 10/8/2018 & rated 91 points: Opened at least an hour before pouring. Deep purple, very smooth even before food. Improved over meal. Consumed w steak. Vacuum corked remaining 1/3 and enjoyed a half glass each night two. Loads of sediment. (1987 views)
Tasted by Ron Slye on 11/27/2017 & rated 90 points: This is still drinking well, but not exceptional. Nice and solid on the first day -- with some nice complexity that reminds me of a lesser Bordeaux. On the second day (half a bottle overnight on the counter, just recorked), a bit browner and more tired, though still drinkable. I have one left and plan to drink it in the next year. (2832 views)
Tasted by Stefan75 on 11/2/2017 & rated 90 points: Last bottle, no decant, not as good as the 1998 palazzi/trinoro we started with but still a wine aged in grace with some remaining life in it (2936 views)
Tasted by Peech on 3/25/2017 & rated 90 points: decanted 1 hour prior to serving. First whiff showed black olives and stewed prunes. Later with vanilla, forest, and meaty notes. Mature now and somewhat disappointing. (98 views)
Tasted by dutradan@msn.com on 2/1/2017 & rated 92 points: Like Delia Viader herself, a beautiful woman full of class and improving with age

Tasted by dougdelporto on 12/22/2016 & rated 90 points: Overall, as expected for this - which is to say, quite good. After all, it's a 19 years old already! Good dark color with almost no bricking. Great balance between acidity and tannin. Very herbal, with minimal discernible fruit remaining. Nice and smooth finish that lingers with a bit of licorice and menthol. Heavy sediment throughout. This got better through dinner, and some vanilla, cassis, and black fruits appeared towards the end. A reasonable bottle if you like old and aged, but this is starting to pass its peak. Drink up...  Tasted by ed-d on 10/26/2016 & rated 89 points: I've been a little disappointed with the older Viader wines. Showing its age in the flavors. Fruit is a bit dried out & the Cab Franc weedy element seems to have taken over. OK but not great. (3487 views)
Tasted by stschutz on 4/17/2016 & rated 87 points: Very slight port wine aftertaste on a well kept bottle makes me wonder how much longer this vintage can hold up. Color was good, but not much left on the nose. Advise to drink now. (4414 views)
Tasted by Ron Slye on 3/5/2016 & rated 89 points: At first a bit closed and dry -- almost as though the fruit has dried out. But with about an hour in the glass, the dry veneer dissipates, and some fruit, with some nice savory flavors, begins to emerge. A bit of sediment near the end cut short what was starting to be a more enjoyable wine. (3123 views)
Tasted by Ron Slye on 12/27/2015 & rated 88 points: Musty nose with elements of dark berries and prunes palate of sweet prunes and dry forest floor. Still some tannins. This is a bit more mellow than earlier in its life. Finish is medium and dry. Chalky tannins at the end. (375'ml) (3416 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
