Community Tasting Notes (average 87.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mikemaan on 10/24/2015 flawed bottle: The cork seal was good. I kept it well-cellared, but it turned. Not drinkable. So sad. (889 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 6/9/2013 & rated 93 points: Drank from Magnum, won at Mt. Veeder tasting auction. Lovely rich, intense nose of inky, mineral, stony, dusty, dark fruit, more of the same on the palate, medicinal taste, consumed this magnum over two nights, probably could age ten more years, very nostril clearing, refreshing to drink, medium body, long finish. (1550 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 2/25/2011 & rated 90 points: Sampled 1/30/11. Mt. Veeder fruit that tastes more like Spring Mountain. The real issue with this wine is that too much Oak comes through even after 5 years. (2110 views)
Tasted by D.Callahan on 5/6/2010 & rated 89 points: Somewhat subdued nose showing black fruit including black currant. Nice palate showing fruit and a touch of licorice. Very smooth integrated tannins. Very good wine. (2268 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/23/2009 & rated 91 points: Napa Valley with Altitude Trade Tasting (Mount Veeder, Spring Mountain and Diamond Mountain wines) (Officers' Club, Fort Mason, San Francisco): Tight black fruit nose; tart black fruit and sage palate; medium finish 91+ pts. (3505 views)

Yates Family Vineyard

Producer website

Yates Family Vineyard is located on the slopes of Mt. Veeder, north and west of the town of Napa. This is the southern most vineyard in the Mt. Veeder Appellation. The property has been within the family since 1950 making it one of the older continuously owned vineyard properties in this part of Napa. A ghost winery is on site which dates from the early 1860's making this one of the first wineries within Napa County. German immigrants first developed the vineyard land in this location. This winery even has a perfectly preserved Roman Press (one of only two that we are aware of still in existence in Napa County - the other being at Nichelini Winery). Their 35 acre vineyard for the past 50+ years has been supplying a number of well-known Napa wineries with fruit for their own wines. As with many vineyard managers and growers they made home wine on the side for friends and family and finally went over to the commercial side in 1999 releasing their first vintage.

As a testament to the vineyards and winemaking, some of their home made Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc from the cellar is tasting great more than 30 years later! More about the actual commercial wine in a moment. This part of Mt. Veeder historically was known as the Napa Redwoods, named after a large grove of redwoods similar to Armstrong Grove in Sonoma County. That is the name this winery took for 7 years (Napa Redwoods Estate), but for branding and marketing purposes, Yates Family was chosen as the new name.

It is truly a family run affair. Today the grandson has returned to the vineyards and is the winemaker and his daughters are also heavily involved in the day-to-day operations. He has a degree in Agriculture, but for many years ran a construction company and is a self taught winemaker with a passion for wine. Production as of press time is merely 800-900 cases. The vineyards are in a spectacular location, with most of the blocks very steeply planted. On a clear day, a drive to the ridge top above the vineyards reveals 3-bridges in the distance; the Golden Gate next to San Francisco, as well as The Richmond and Bay Bridges. Mt. Diablo is also seen way in the distance. Their focus is on rich concentrated wines without the huge tannins. All their wine is made at nearby Hendry Winery located just before you start climbing into the hills. 2004 was the last year they used the Napa Redwoods Estate label.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
