Tasted by Paulsc on 9/15/2012 & rated 91 points: Colour is still very pale, no signs of ageing.Shy nose, citrus, vanilla. On the palate, citrus, some tropical fruits, smoke, long, complex aftertaste, not completely dry. Lovely. Very easy to drink a whole bottle of this. Top class wine. (1002 views)
Tasted by Paulsc on 3/15/2010 & rated 90 points: Screwcap. Very pale colour in the glass, light straw. Lemon and mild vanilla nose. Lemon on the palate, lip-smacking acidity, not at all overdone. Long and flavoursome, coating the back of the tongue with citrus and some green apple. After the fruit comes cinnamon and subtle vanilla. 14.5% alcohol going by the label, but the wine is in balance and the finish is just a little hot. Drunk without food but it would be great with roast chicken.

After 2 hrs, consistent nose and palate, nice wine. I think it can develop some more complexity with another 2-3 years bottle age. Five bottles to go. Pity Ashton Hills is so hard to find in the UK. (1075 views)
Tasted by db from oz on 5/11/2009 & rated 92 points: glorious. normal kangaroo poo aromas had softened (1199 views)

Ashton Hills

Producer Website

Ashton Hills
Ashton Hills is a three hectare, dry-grown vineyard that lies in the Piccadilly Valley sub region of the Adelaide Hills on a ridge just below the summit of Mount Lofty. The estate was founded by Stephen George in 1982 and since that time it has built a reputation as one of Australia’s finest proponents of pinot noir and cool climate whites.

For over 30 years Stephen experimented with up to 25 pinot noir clones, ultimately settling on five key clones that now make the acclaimed Reserve and Estate Pinot Noirs from Ashton Hills, plus a range of awarded sparkling wines. Eight carefully cultivated rows of riesling also remain in the Ashton Hills vineyard, producing a highly exclusive and limited Ashton Hills riesling each year.

Stephen has now taken a step back into semi-retirement to spend more time travelling to his beloved Burgundy, and has transferred his stake in Ashton Hills to Wirra Wirra Vineyards, with its pedigree in cool climate Adelaide Hills whites and quality McLaren Vale reds.
