Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by VinCA on 12/4/2021: Musty. Unfortunate because the fruit is great. More must in the nose than mouth. Had hoped the 15.6% alcohol would have preserved better (365 views)
Tasted by ESTEELE90 on 6/30/2018: At tasting. Brief note. Nose and palate show sweet cherry pie, kirsch, cassis, and a ton of extract. Touch of dried underbrush with time. Midpalate has a great chewy texture to it and despite its mouth-coating thickness it remains well balanced thanks to prevalent dusty tannins and nearly resolved acids. Long and sweet finish isn't complex but is quite pleasurable especially with salty cheese. (925 views)
Tasted by usbeauty on 1/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Smooth runner. Olallieberry and cassis, with a hint of alcohol. Maybe a year of good drinking left. (1481 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 11/21/2014: Bramble and raisin. A bit of age but still interesting. (1632 views)
Tasted by mdscott on 8/29/2014 & rated 90 points: W/Argentine grill for Kim's birthday (1685 views)
Tasted by JERB on 12/21/2013 & rated 90 points: Still quite nice, but we suspected that it lacked the punch and the fruit power that it once had. (1517 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 1/8/2010 & rated 88 points: Great nose and brambly Zin fruit, mostly smooth, but a bit of alcohol protruding on the finish. I love Ridge Zins, but I prefer them not to be late picked. 15.6% abv. (2120 views)
Tasted by oaxaca90049 on 11/5/2009: Drank with Paul and Barbara. It seemed to be past it's prime, not much fruit and not the weight or, viscosity i had remember from previous bottles. definitely more restrained than I like my zins. The others liked it much better. (1895 views)
Tasted by damntall on 4/10/2009 & rated 90 points: I think this particular bottle was on the verge, but in spite of that, it still drank exceptionally well. It's somewhere between dinner wine and dessert wine, though we chose to serve it this night with dessert--and we loved it. Served with dark chocolate, roasted almonds, hazelnuts, sesame cookies, and some other tidbits, and went especially well with the cookies and hazelnuts. (1828 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 6/6/2008 & rated 91 points: What a monster! Not as monstrous as the Turley Zins, but this is a big, rich zin. 15.6% alcohol, but balanced and delicious. A pleasant surprise as it is not pruney or overripe which I hate. (1670 views)
Tasted by JDRFoster on 2/2/2008 & rated 91 points: Rich, jammy, dark berry fruit. Mouthfilling but, as others have said never hot. Nicely done. (1715 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 12/29/2007 & rated 91 points: I really like this wine. It was one of the first to rekindle my faith in Ridge zins, a faith that had waned through the late 90's and early 2000 vintages. Although it has a ton of alcohol, as one would expect in a late picked wine, the wine is not hot. Great juicy zin berry flavors, no oak that I detect and still very fresh. Wish I had more. (1606 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 7/14/2006 & rated 90 points: One of the better efforts I have had from Ridge in the 2000's. IMHO, something has happened with them and the quality of the wines has been off since maybe 2000. This one kicks it up a notch, late picked so high in alcohol and ripenes, it is not hot on the pallet. The nose is a little alcoholic, but I probably let the wine warm a little too much before writing my tasting notes. However, the nose still has those classic Ridge hallmarks of dark berries with a little hint of the good fermentation odor. Dark but not opaquely so, it is not hot on the tongue, with moderate tannins, raspberries and other dark fruits and a fairly long finish. A really good effort from a winery that has lost it's way. I hope they get the magic back soon. (1967 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
