Tasted by Rpfe on 12/27/2022 & rated 88 points: Decanted for 2-3 hours for Christmas supper, with another bottle opened but not decanted and drunk on 27 decemberThese wines lack finesse to my taste. They are full but never really show much fruit .Too masculine for my taste but maybe I am drinking it too young.  Tasted by kakpoo on 1/12/2021 & rated 83 points: The premium price over other Gevrey-Chambertin village level wines is well warranted. (1864 views)
Tasted by portman63 on 3/13/2020 & rated 91 points: Quite deep garnet and not giving too much on the nose. Black fruited and pretty intense grape tannins. Opened up over a 2-3 hours and showed more black cherry fruit and some floral on the nose. I think this is a hold for 4-5 more years. (2333 views)
 Tasted by Marc C on 10/6/2019 & rated 91 points: épaulée 2h

(2184 views)
Tasted by Rani on 2/2/2019 & rated 90 points: Opened and double decanted an hour before drinking. It was fairly tannic out of the bottle. After two hours of air really hit its stride. Black and purple fruit, earthy, sous bois, but with a soft structure, hint of greenness on the palate (not unpleasant), silky texture and fine powdery tannins. (2538 views)
Tasted by mr_swirl on 9/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Impressive village wine. Average 75 year old vines ! Nice concentrated dark fruits, spice and typical Gevrey firmness, yet gentle oak. Drinking well but can age for probably 10 Y+ (1993 views)
Tasted by conviction buy on 7/16/2018 & rated 93 points: Pnp, aroma of dark fruits, hint of stem and spice. Nicely evolve on palate, good concentration of fruits and acidity, oak is invisible and drink really nice. Really good and worth effort to store up. (2038 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 1/19/2018 & rated 92 points: Nose is floral with wild berries, gentle oak, and flowers. Palate has very good depth for a village wine. Drinking well now but it can also age for many more years. An exceptional village wine despite a so so vintage. My wotn. (2310 views)
Tasted by conviction buy on 1/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Bt breathed 2hrs. Deep ruby, red and blue fruits with hint of stem and earth. Elevated extraction for a village wine, mildly sweet fruits meld well with slightly dry tannin and acidity. Some oak spice into the finish but no distracting, premium cru level wine with TVV vines. (1992 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/17/2016 & rated 91 points: Fine Vines Fall 2016 Portfolio Tasting (Fine Vines - Melrose Park IL): Tasting, brief note. Very dense black fruit with roast meat character. Very long and powerful for it level. Perhaps barely entering its peak drinking window, I'd really like to try this again around 2020. (3650 views)

Tasted by Rechrom on 5/21/2016 & rated 90 points: A well made wine in virtually all respects, as the fruit, balance, and depth are way above what one expects of a village wine, which is expected given the producer and price. The wood is obtrusive however, and gets in the way. This has a lot going on, so maybe with time it will outlast the barrel, but I am glad I have not invested heavily here. (2811 views)
Tasted by heegaard on 12/25/2015 & rated 93 points: One of best wines I have tasted (2849 views)
Tasted by justburg on 12/10/2014 & rated 88 points: At Jade Palace for a "Top 10 Burg producer" theme. Second wine, serve alongside the Rousseau Clos de la Roche. This was an absolutely different animal. I couldn't find 2 more contrasting wines! Dark red, almost opaque (see the difference!). Nose was really intense, lots of ripe blueberries and currants, dark fruits, scorched earth and a hint of new oak. My wife was the only one who nailed it as a Gevrey. Palate had lots of intensity, with an underlying elegance, dark fruit, and hints of oak and wood. The finish was not too complex and long, but then again this is a village, albeit a brilliant village. Whatever critics say about Bernard Dugat, I'm still a firm believer that he is able to ensure the most wonderful balance in his wines. I've tasted from cask, from bottle, vintages all the way from the 1980s to now and I can safely say this is a brilliant winemaker at work. This will need time. Lovely wine. (3916 views)
Tasted by mzimberg on 1/31/2014 & rated 94 points: Dark ruby. Perfect nose of Gevrey earth, macerated cherries, and pine. Sappy, pasty palate (a reason for my burgundy fanaticism) with layers of coco, cola, and cherry juice. Incredible fruit, especially from a usually poor vintage. An absolutely stellar bottle. Grand cru length. (3793 views)
Tasted by tooch on 12/13/2013 & rated 92 points: Domaine Wine Storage Holiday Party (Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL): Far too expensive of a wine, but damn, was this tasty. Had the forward fruit profile of 2006 with a very complex deeply spiced palate. Loved this and wish I could afford more. (4582 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/12/2013 & rated 90 points: Domaine End of Year Party (Chicago, IL): Very big and fruity, with a nice touch of oak, but all in all a bit out of proportion in comparison to the palate. Quite delicious nonetheless. (4238 views)
Tasted by P-M on 7/26/2013 & rated 88 points: Muted nose. Raspberry and mineral on the palate. Somewhat thin. 30 minutes breathing time which perhaps wasn't enough. (3686 views)
Tasted by ItamarL on 11/27/2012 & rated 87 points: We opened the wine 12 hours before drinking it.

The wine looks black colored and opaque.
It smells like Black currant (cassis), Prune, Mineral, Forest floor, and Chocolate. The body is Full. The wine has Coarse to heavy texture. The wine finishes Long.

I would say that this wine is very manly, strong and almost unbalanced. Classic dugat-py for my taste.

Not sure about the aging potential, I tend to think it is ready and will not pick beyond. (3617 views)
Tasted by AlanM68 on 9/8/2012 & rated 95 points: Wow! In stunning form tonight. Opened 2 hours before drinking. Rich ruby red in the glass, red fruits on the nose, intricate richness and complexity in the mouth - lightly roasted coffee, touch of liquorice, real smoothness, a little glycerol. So looking forward to the remaining bottles. (3554 views)
Tasted by St Paul on 4/1/2012 & rated 85 points: very disappointing. This is earthy and green with some unbalanced structure. I have learned to enjoy this producer but this was not great. Maybe it was the bottle? (4169 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 3/15/2012 & rated 91 points: Red Burgundy vs. Cold Climate Pinot tasting (Colicchio & Sons, New York, NY): Tasted blind. Brought by Josh K. Dark purple-red. Quite closed and reticent on the nose. Get glimmers of deep sweet fruit and florality: purple violets, but these glimpses are fleeting. A touch of lavender. Deep and dark on the palate - quite floral. Chewy tannins, but smooth. Really pure end-palate and finish of purple flowers. I guessed 06/08 Burg. Nose - 5+/6, Palate - 4.5+/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20. (4537 views)
Tasted by AlanM68 on 12/22/2011 & rated 92 points: Terrific wine at a good price, even in harrods. Liked it so much, I've bought 6 more (from Farr). This is "proper" burgundy - a beautiful ruby red, very fruity with a great length. (3753 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 10/2/2011 & rated 92 points: Rich and youthful, nice nose, very full palate and clean and medium long finish. Drank very well with a veal dish, less interesting by itself. Has many years left, and needs at least two more I think. (3357 views)

(COEUR DE ROI Dugat-Py) Dugat-Py #2 Dear Friends, ...let's try this again with the bottle scores from last night's Burghound. While many will find it hard to believe, the 2006 portfolio was rated basically the same as Dugat-Py's incredible 2005 stable (all the 2006 wines are less expensive as well). As stated the last time we offered this set, I'm sure you can find these cheaper elsewhere but the provenance is second to none (directly from the source) and the US allocation is a fraction of what it was last year - in addition all have already arrived (this is not a pre-arrival). On the other hand, if you have patience, you may want to investigate direct importing these out of the UK as well - the Pound is so depressed right now that a unique opportunity exists but it won't last forever - you'll start to see a bevy of grey market wine come out of the UK in the next month or so (similar to how it was 5-7 years ago) but be warned - make sure you are dealing with a very reputable source as they are having similar economic problems to the US. 2006 Dugat-Py Bourgogne "Halinard" (BH88) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Champeaux" (BH93) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin "Coeur de Roi" Tres Vieilles Vignes (BH91) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Lavaux St. Jacques" (BH94) 2006 Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin (BH95) 2006 Dugat-Py Mazoyeres-Chambertin (BH95) 2006 Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin (BH96) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Burg8401 Burg8402 Burg8403 Burg8404 Burg8405 Burg8406 Burg8407

(COEUR DE ROI Dugat-Py) Dugat-Py Dear Friends, While we were snowed-in, the ultimate stocking stuffer arrived - our parcel of Dugat-Py. As it usually is, each wine is EXTREMELY LIMITED and the 2006 vintage is even more allocated than 2005 (it's the most allocated vintage since we introduced the wines with the 1996 campaign). In 2006, the quality reaches a new level of transparency for the Domaine and Bernard Dugat believes his 2006 portfolio demonstrates a classic display of Burgundian terroir throughout the range - the wines are nearly the equal of 2005, just a different style. Where other vintages at Dugat-Py veer toward Syrah (and remain controversial), in 2006 they actually taste like stunning examples of Pinot Noir. With that in mind, Bernard has fashioned the finest Evocelles, Coeur du Roi and Gevrey VV of his career - three wines often overlooked by collectors (I believe he would agree with that statement). The Charmes-Chambertin is also incredible in 2006. As far as prices, I'm sure you can find all of these cheaper elsewhere but the provenance is second to none (directly from the source) and the US allocation is a fraction of what it was last year - there is no incentive for sources to discount (especially at the upper end). Only 10 cases of the upper end wines came to the US this year (for the whole country, including restaurants) versus 30 last year. While most of the US is ignoring the entire 2006 Burgundy vintage (both red and white) this is one portfolio you may want to take a close look at. From a collectable standpoint, Dugat-Py remains at the very highest level. Unlike Bordeaux, the finest Burgundy wines are produced in such small quantities that rarity (and subsequent investment value) is almost assured. In addition (I say this every year to no avail), please do not order these based on scores, try to select them based on their vineyard, style or persona. Today's score has little relevance to the eventual pleasure you will derive 10-20 years down the road when a bottle is uncorked. I am printing the scores because everyone will ask but I am also advising you to read the verbiage and consider other factors besides a wine receiving one more point than another... Keep in mind, when doing research, this is not "Dugat" this is "Dugat-Py" (as an example, Dugat's 2005 Charmes is $249): 2006 Dugat-Py Bourgogne Rouge (BH N/R) 2006 Dugat-Py Bourgogne "Halinard" (BH N/R) 2006 Dugat-Py Pommard "La Levrieres" Vieilles Vignes (BH N/R) 2006 Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin (BH92-95) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (BH90-92) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Lavaux St. Jacques" (BH91-94) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Champeaux" (BH91-93) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Petite-Chapelle" (BH90-93) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin "Coeur de Roi" Tres Vieilles Vignes (BH89-92) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin "Evocelles" (BH89-91) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes (BH88-90) 2006 Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin (BH93-95) 2006 Dugat-Py Mazoyeres-Chambertin (BH92-94) 2006 Vosne-Romanee Vieilles Vignes (BH89-92) PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH FINAL ALLOCATIONS - Niki will do her best to accommodate everyone. Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Très Vieilles Vignes - Coeur de Roy

This wine is made from various scattered parcels around the 'Villages' area of Gevrey, and is not a single 'lieu-dit'; i.e. 'Coeur de Roy' is a trade designation ('cuvée"), not an appellation.. jht

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
