 Tasted by jfkwines on 12/8/2023 & rated 91 points: 1 hour decant. Very juicy but not overly fruity for a Carlisle. More mineral and slight earth in our opinion. Very full flavor with full integration no Syrah funk or tannin. Drank along g a 2005 Agartha and the differences were clear and impressive in regards to each other. Drink now, hold till next year if you must but I don't think it's getting any better with time (433 views)

I'm now thinking that bottle was not in ideal condition given how good this bottle was at 16 years old. Deep ruby color in the bowl. Blackberries and black raspberries in the nose with licorice and hints of minerality and spice. Lots of rich black fruit in the flavor. Very well balanced, full bodied and complex with a smooth medium to long finish, the 2007 James Berry Syrah is drinking wonderfully right now. (555 views)

 Tasted by Charlie C on 3/26/2021 & rated 94 points: Dark red in color. The nose is still a bit tight but there is black cherry there. On the palate there is anise, black cherry, blackberry. Deeply flavored fruit that brightens with air. Firm tannins, probably need another 2 years to soften. Fine acidity, great balance. Finishes long with red fruits. Very nice right now, but needs another 2 years to peak. (1605 views)

I wanted to through this one to compare with all of the higher priced Syrah's and GSM that we were drinking to see how it would stack up, and stack up it did. Carlisle Syrah's amaze me and they drink well about their weight. Can easily be the best QPR's out there. (3407 views)

 Tasted by SineQuaNon on 11/1/2015 & rated 95 points: YES! Served after the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Carlisle JBV's, this indeed showed some welcome evolution in the most positive way! Tannins had begun to take the backseat and the overall impression was that of a wine IN BALANCE! Everything fits perfectly together. Notes not dissimilar to the other vintages and not yet tertiary. Rich, intense, balanced, complex with a lovely mix of primary and secondary flavours and as mentioned, beautifully soft tannins. (2336 views)

Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, iodine, a very deep leather component. Just hauntingly beautiful. On the palate, this is tighter than the nose. With air and swirling, there are black raspberries, black pepper, and damp leather qualities. delicious. Complex. great balance. Long finish. Just a wonderful wine. Remembering back to the Saxum JBV, this seems darker, less "fruity", and that deep leathery note is really intriguing. Both great takes but different. (2620 views)

The extra air barely made a dent. This one seems shut down hard at the moment. Purchased on release via a friend and properly stored. Definitely hold. (2373 views)
 Tasted by galewskj on 1/3/2015: Decanted 1.5 hours, and then it sat in glass for a good 2 hours, because it just wasn't ready. Really ripe dark nose of blackberry and blueberry, palate was very tannic at first. It loosened up some in glass, but never really transformed into any kind of good experience. Too young, and sorry that this was my only bottle. (1946 views)

Muted nose but palate shows dark fruits, coffee and oak. Not drinking as well as the cardiac hill I had a few weeks ago. HOLD and hope this gets better. (2233 views)
 Tasted by rocknroller on 1/2/2015: Friday Afternoon Delight (Joe's Place, Mpls, Mn): Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 1.5hrs. Drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. Very tight up front, gradually gives up some of what lurks, oak, blackberry, black fruits, scorched earth and hints roasted game. The palate is primary but very deep with road tar, black fruits, oak, tight, dense, nice but astringent grippy tannins, pepper. This has a great deal of potential but is very young and despite a decant needs more time. Score reserved, but impression is 90-93pts. (2131 views)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

James Berry Vineyard

Under the expert care of Justin Smith, James Berry Vineyard has quickly established itself as one of the premiere Rhône varietal vineyards in the state. The “Carlisle” block of James Berry Vineyard is located just below the terraced “Bone Rock” section and is planted to Syrah clones 470 and 174. Justin practices sustainable farming, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. And with the limestone laden soils and devigorating rootstock, the vines struggle, yielding small quantities of intensely flavored fruit.
