Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 68 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Dylan Tyler on 10/10/2018 & rated 87 points: A little disappointed. May be past its prime. Two dimensional. Cough syrup on nose and palate. Weird finish. However, some enjoyment in drinking thus decent score. (1671 views)
Tasted by thalver on 6/13/2016: Upon opening, I assumed this bottling was fading away. No nose, fairly mute on the palate, short finish. After about an hour open it did come around to be quite aromatically expressive, and with a lingering, if subtle finish. No hints of off, possibly smoke aromas that I have sometimes gotten with this wine. Probably time to drink up. (3027 views)
Tasted by jhemming on 6/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Inviting aroma of darker fruits, cedar and a touch of smoke. Rounded palate of sweet red fruits and baking spices. Medium-Light body with silken mouth feel. Some acidity remains. Would drink over the next 1-3yrs. (3582 views)
Tasted by gharbour on 12/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Tasting a series of American pinots this holiday. This one is the most European so far. Nice. (4019 views)
Tasted by brucerob on 12/14/2014 & rated 91 points: This wine has mellowed a bit and is a bit softer than a lot of the other Sojourn offerings... great fruit profile. Drink up if you like the fruit-forward style (3771 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 6/1/2014 & rated 88 points: At this age, the oak and the alcohol are already ganging up on me. Quite spicy, some fruit (cherry, raspberry) that I think would have been better a year or two ago. On the 4th day under argon, some brett surprisingly appeared, which I think raised it one point. (3527 views)
Tasted by Wine_in_HD on 5/18/2014 & rated 93 points: sweet red fruit flavors, good acidity, nice mouth feel, a little hot with the alcohol. Overall a very good pinot. Interesting WS score of 78 and comments, bears no relation to what this wine is now. (2296 views)
Tasted by winegr on 12/31/2013 & rated 92 points: I thought this was excellent. 91-92. Balanced nicely. (2242 views)
Tasted by ScottGoodwin on 9/14/2013: Sulphury/deductive. Sheep fart. Strawberries. Full bodied. Biggest of the '08s tonight. More complexity. Darker. More interesting finish. Pine needles. Gun smoke. Red fruits. (1844 views)
Tasted by CarpeVinum on 7/22/2013 & rated 93 points: A bit of effervescence upon opening but quickly escaped leaving behind an absolutely delicious rendering of Pinot Noir. Just the right amount of fruit not to be overbearing and great characteristics. Was my last '08 rogers. So sad but really at the end of the window anyway. (2326 views)
Tasted by Surfdoc on 7/3/2013 & rated 90 points: Fragrant, floral nose with dried orange peel and pine forest. Raspberry and black tea flavors with a slightly sharp cedar finish. (1900 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 12/7/2012 & rated 89 points: Nose is muted and abrasive. Smells like a mild cleaner. Here, the taste is much better than the nose. Mouthfeel is soft and plush - feminine. Taste is a new world pinot frame with a slightly bitter finish. There is a touch of funk. Decent soft red fruit. Overall, nice but not outstanding. I remember another bottle being better a few months ago. (2723 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 9/17/2012 & rated 92 points: Sojourn Pinot is so consistently outstanding. It's like Pujols stepping up and hitting a stand-up double on the first pitch. Love this stuff. (3376 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 8/29/2012 & rated 92 points: The lightest Sojourn pinot yet. A very clear red. Opened at 5. First taste at 7. Cherries + some bitterness that wore off. At 8:00 there was some smokiness as this wine really smoothed out. It was the WOTN (wine of the night). (3131 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 6/20/2012 & rated 92 points: Absolutely hit the spot [as usual] as a full-throttle Sojourn Pinot. It's got this earthy crunchiness to it that comes across as an earnest authentic bottle of wine. I really enjoyed it. Gonzo that WS wen 78 on it - obviously an off bottle. If that's what it takes to knock a $48 bottle down into the $20s I wish they'd rate more CA Pinots like this poorly. (3453 views)
Tasted by thalver on 6/3/2012: This was not as good a showing for this wine as the last bottle in December. Bottle variation perhaps? There is a weirdness that permeates the nose, palate and finish that I assume is smoke taint. The sweetness that comes to the fore at the finish seems incongruous vis a vis the other flavors. Part of the bottle down the drain. 86-87 (2641 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 5/18/2012: Aerate in decanter 30 minutes. Medium garnet core, no sign of age. Brett dominates what seems to be some very pretty fruit underneath. Bacon fat, campfire, cherry, some strawberry. Medium bodied with generous acids. Smooth, Burgundian styling, save the brett, of course. Drink thru 2015, 14,2% abv (2356 views)
Tasted by MotoMannequin on 5/3/2012: Dark ruby color with a clear meniscus. Black cherry and spice on the nose. Palate is medium- to full-bodied with cranberry, black cherry, and pine needle carrying to the finish. Fairly round with little supporting acidity, but the pine aspect creates enough complexity to keep this interesting. Quite enjoyable if you're going for a heavier-styled pinot. (2406 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 4/28/2012 & rated 91 points: Very nice. This is a med to full bodied PN that is drinking very well today. Forward dark fruit, sassafras, licorice, white pepper and abit of leather on the finish (2327 views)
Tasted by bruce61 on 4/18/2012 & rated 97 points: I cannot say if it was the dinner or a very welcoming palate, but this was one of the best pinots I've ever had. It was the perfect balance of cherry fruit, some tannin, spice, with an extremely long, pleasing finish. (2769 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 3/9/2012 & rated 90 points: Friday at Home 08 California Pinot Noir: The clear winner for tonight. Much deeper and richer dark and red fruit with earthy undertones and white pepper on the finish. Drinking nicely today. (2706 views)
Tasted by Yamadori on 2/5/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanted 1 hour. Quite smokey on the nose with notes of cherry, baking soda and a little vanilla oak. Red cherry and cranberry fruit profile with notes of cloves and stone. Nice balance and minerality to this wine. The red fruit was a little sweet initially but became less so as the wine evolved over the course of a few hours. Very smooth and elegant mouthfeel. Quite a long finish with smooth tannins. Defintely the most burgundian of the Sojourn offerings i have tried. Should improve over the short term. Sadly this was my only bottle but i am looking foward to trying the '09 and '10 vintages of this wine although based on this bottle i may hold them for a couple of years. (2660 views)
Tasted by Anthony Lombardi on 1/17/2012: Dark ruby red. Followed over two nights. The first showed smoky notes all over the nose and palate. Big red fruit with some alcohol showing on the back end. Sealed and will retaste the next day. Day 2 shows powerful cloves and red fruit on the nose. Sweetish red fruit on entry, but a bit of an angular mouthfeel. Still showing heat on the finish. Not in balance right now. (2994 views)
Tasted by thalver on 12/18/2011: This has come together and is drinking substantially better than bottles about a year ago. Tart cranberry and smokiness on the nose...integrated on the pallate, a bit of astringency on the finish, but nothing approaching the disappointing showings for this wine a year ago. I do wonder how close this vineyard was to the fires that plagued some areas of CA during the vintage 90-91 (2957 views)
Tasted by pedwards on 10/17/2011 & rated 90 points: I can smell this for days. My first thought was that this smells like fall. Cloves, baking spices and earth. Beautiful pure red fruit on the palate with spices and toasty oak. I like this and think the oak and acid will integrate even more in a year or so and make this an even better bottle for my palate. Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Rodgers Creek Vineyard

Rodgers Creek is nestled in the hills above Petaluma in the Sonoma Coast appellation. Our block is a gently sloping hillside at 800 feet elevation planted to a Cote Rotie clone specifically selected for this site. We love stem inclusion here, as we feel it accentuates the uniqueness of this vineyard and the Syrah varietal character.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
