Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 185 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jochems on 8/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Very much in line with the previous note. Although I do get the feel that this wine is at/past peak. It seemed slightly less exciting.
Again, this bottke had a fair bit of sediment. (473 views)
Tasted by smahk on 12/15/2022 & rated 89 points: Color: deep garnet
Nose: anise and earth
Taste: plum, earth, leather, mushroom
A bit of fruit left - tart cherry and plum with loads of secondary flavors - earth, leather, anise, mushroom, just a bit of a finish. My last bottle - this wine has peaked - time to drink up . (822 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 10/20/2022 & rated 89 points: An unintended evening wine as it fell over in the cellar and broke - sadly, only salvaged half a glass!
Bouquet of worn leather, brown spices, undergrowth and roasted herbs. On further nosing, there is salted liquorice and warmed/tinned cherries.
A lifted entry, this full-bodied wine is precise, intense and focused. Whilst a touch of cola/charcoal suggest age, the wine still exudes dark 85% chocolate, plenty of sour red cherry, black plum and coffee grinds. A fairly densely structured wine, the tannins are firm and mouth coating and whilst there is flesh, the long finish shows earth and salt and a more granular texture. Whilst only a one-half glass, it did seem to tire over the 10 minutes, suggesting it has reached its plateau of maturity and now declining. (781 views)
Tasted by r.o.man on 3/4/2022: Time to drink this up. Still fresh, but loosing energy and gaining flattening balsamic tones and loosing fruit. Nevertheless this was a beautiful wine for a long time. (1174 views)
Tasted by smahk on 6/30/2021 & rated 91 points: Color: deep ruby
Nose: plum, earth, mushroom
Taste: plum, cassis, anise, cedar
There is still much fruit upfront well integrated into secondary flavors of cassis, anise and vanilla. The age has made this wine smooth without any heat. Tannins linger long enough to be delightful. This could continue to evolve but is drinking well now. (1701 views)
Tasted by Edv on 6/12/2021 & rated 91 points: Couleur grenat, nez épicé, bouche soyeuse avec une pointe d'acidité et une légère amertume. (1433 views)
Tasted by Thief on 2/12/2021 & rated 92 points: Beautiful red fruit aromas and a hint of spice. At this stage, 14 years after the vintage, the tannins are soft and supple. The acidity is balanced with the tannins and fruit. Very enjoyable and worth every penny of the $30 I spent on release. Paired excellently with a homemade bolognese and pasta. (1234 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 12/7/2020 & rated 89 points: Mid garnet to tawny rim
Bright perfumed aromas of macerated red fruits, pencil lead, crushed rock and cola tonic.
Plenty of ripe red berries on the entry with red plums, baked cherry pie. Soft and approachable out of the blocks change to a more mineral grippy texture with rock dust and grippy tannins set on fresh acidity. The wine has a lovely delineation and poise that is filled with plenty of more baked fruits, sour plums, and black olive. It does increasingly show its age as the wine stayed in glass with more cola, charcoal coming through. The finish is juicier, turning viscous with plum jam—good length and arguably a better drink a few years ago. 88-89 (812 views)
Tasted by Jochems on 11/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Interestingly this bottle showed much fresher than the previous one, although it has matured a bit longer. Also the color seems to show a younger wine. I read more about bottle variation in other notes and this is another example of that. And a positive one!

Medium ruby color with no hints of amber at the rim yet. Full aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blueberry and some liquorice and dried herbs. Full bodied with smooth, integrated, tannins and balanced ripe fruit and acidity. A long smooth finish. Very nicely integrated and matured although still lively and exciting. At peak, drink now!
Definitely deserves a notch up.

One more note: this bottle had much more sediment than the previous one, perhaps this is typical of a ‘good’ bottle? (1102 views)
Tasted by Lemmy-W on 9/27/2020 flawed bottle: Badly past its prime, not sure if there has been an issue with storage at some point. like vinegar. (892 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 3/22/2020 & rated 86 points: This bottle has been hit or miss for me in the past. This was my last bottle and it showed better than any other. Crimson color with bricking. An earthy wine with violet aromas. Notes of charcoal, cherry and meaty notes. Showing its age. 86 points. (1435 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 12/13/2019 & rated 90 points: hidden and forgotten in my cellar.. this Torrione made of sangiovese (80%) merlot(15%) and CabSauv (5%) is still in its drinking window and confirms its classy pedigree with hints of ripe fruit (almost gone), pencil, underbrush and leather too. Always pleasant but drink up (1420 views)
(2083 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 7/31/2019 & rated 93 points: Tasted blind. We all thought it was a brunello from a great vintage. Very supple but full of flavors finishing with fresh acidity. Cherry , vanilla, herbs. Long finish. A steal at this price. (1566 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 7/26/2019 & rated 94 points: First 2007 Torrione that I've tried since early 2012. Give this at least 2 hours of air. At around the 4 hour mark, this was at its very best. Full-bodied and plush in texture for a Torrione - clearly from a hotter vintage. Even so, the energy, purity and layered depth of the fruit here is truly remarkable. So much ripe, sweet, delicious cherry, raspberry and strawberry fruit, perfectly matched to a lively acidity. Shows phenomenal depth on the mid-palate and a very long, fruit-drenched finish. Silky tannins, along with hints of spice and mineral linger on and on. Not the most subtle or ethereal Torrione ever, but quite possibly the most flat-out delicious.

Tasted by bobbylion on 3/30/2019 & rated 90 points: I like this bottle better. Wonderfully elegant nose with a good degree of complexity. Nice berries mix on the palate and medium finish. Reminds me of the Musar 2004 I had yesterday, though this is a notch lower. (1377 views)
Tasted by r.o.man on 12/23/2018 & rated 94 points: Simply delicious. Drank over 5 hours and it is gaining energy and expressiveness until the very last drop. Full of energy, very fresh, even youthful still. This is unmistakably grand cru level quality - depth, structure, personality, all there. Big wine, precious, refined, elegant. Great harmony. Long clean finish. A treat. (1202 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 11/16/2018 & rated 93 points: Wonderful bouquet, balance, and texture. Two merlot blends tonight: one cab franc heavy and this sangiovese heavy. Reminded my what a great blending wine merlot can be, adding a core of cherries and earthy coffee notes to ground other favorite varietals. This was such a delight on it's own so I recommend trying it that way after a quick vigorous decant. Drink over the next few years -2021. (1510 views)
(1507 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 4/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Very ready to drink! (2128 views)
Tasted by pinoteer on 4/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Wonderfully juicy and balanced wine with minimal decanting. Pomegranate, raspberries, and milk chocolate flavors. Finish could be a little longer, but still not curt. Last bottle of these, and sorry to see 'em go--good vintage. I have 6 bottles of the 2013, but won't be drinking those for some time. (2274 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 4/2/2018 & rated 90 points: still in top shape, this Torrione made of sangiovese (80%) merlot(15%) and CabSauv (5%), confirms its classy pedigree as a complex Supertuscan with juicy taste, smoothed tannins and hints of ripe fruit (almost gone). Pencil and leather too. Wine for meditation and peaceful relax. At the early beginning of its downhill, in my opinion, so drink up (1873 views)
Tasted by bobbylion on 3/25/2018 & rated 87 points: One of those rare times, where I diverge significantly from WS and CT ratings. 1 hr in decanter. Nothing wrong with the bottle. Thin and somewhat nondescript. Doesn't do much for me, a pleasant wine, though. Will stick to my Mormoreto in the supertuscan section. (1822 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 3/7/2018 & rated 90 points: Torrione is always a good choice. Elegant and discreet hints of red ripe fruit with a touch of wood, light pencil and some enticing smoke. Sure at the end of its best days but still enjoyable (drink up). One bottle left (1665 views)
Tasted by shellylowen on 2/1/2018 & rated 90 points: Deep, dark fruit @ tar, full body, some earthiness, and dry finish (1389 views)

Fattoria Petrolo

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

The estate "Fattoria Petrolo", with its famous winery and prestigious production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The property covers 272 hectares (approximately 672 acres) with 31 hectares (over 76 acres) of specialized vineyards, 19 hectares (about 47 acres) of olive trees, and the rest natural plants and forest located at an altitude between 250 to 400 mt (750 to 1200 ft) above sea level and with a terrain of rocky stratifications of Galestro (a clay-like sediment).

The region is known as the Colli Aretini (Aretini hills) which encircle the Monti Chianti, historically known and declared in 1716 by the Archduke of Tuscany as a particularly precious wine and olive-producing region. The Petrolo Winery is part of the medieval fiefdom of "Galatrona" and its tower, built atop roman ruins, still exists. In fact, this is where the name for our Torrione wine comes from. The Winery was acquired by the Bazzocchi family in the 40s and since the middle of the 80s the proprietors have pursued a wine production based exclusively on the highest quality research.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
