Tasted by Jonnytheneedle on 3/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Huge acid and tannins still. Possibly at the expense of some of the fruit. It is getting old. One left. Will decant for 5 or 6 hours and see if it rounds out any. - feb 2-24 wow wow wow. a good place right now- thought this LAST bottle might have problems due to the previous bottles awkwardness, but this is a great finale. balanced acid and tannins, saline and perfume, mocha, marzipan, medium finish, but good to see its hanging in very nicely. great mid body. see what the night brings.- if you have any of this, keep it for 2-5 years. wonderful treasure.  Tasted by hargy on 9/22/2019 & rated 91 points: love this wine! and so much more youthful than the tired 2008 drunk alongside (1283 views)
Tasted by marcelk on 7/18/2019: It didn't show TCA but it was all acid and no fruit, on its way to vinegar. (1273 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 3/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Light red. Burgundy like aromas, with red fruits, minerals and some liquorice. Intense, concentrated and focused on the palate. I am not familiar with aged Etna wines, but this seems to be at its peak. Impressive! (1369 views)
Tasted by hargy on 1/3/2019 & rated 92 points: fabulous wine - fully mature - unique, complex and long - lovely but not at all sure where it will go from here (1552 views)
Tasted by Labrador on 5/9/2018 & rated 70 points: Opened with a rather astringent nose that blew off. Sadly, it was nice for only a short time and then the astringency came back full force.
Disappointing. (1586 views)
Tasted by swlevison on 4/8/2018 & rated 92 points: A deep ruby wine, the 2007 Passsopisciaro emits aromas of red and black fruits, spices and some laquer-thinner. It has a a med+ body, med+ acidity and med+ tannins. This wine is packed with fruit flavors of stewed cherries, rhubarb, blackberries and petrol. It has a long finish flavored with brown figs.  Tasted by jsherdc on 6/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Very stinky initially. Great acidity and medium intensity cherry and cranberry. Complex. Much better with 2 hours air when the stink blew off. 91/92 (1955 views)
Tasted by Sourdough on 4/22/2017 & rated 91 points: Nerello Mascalesce really pushes my buttons. Grest red fruit nose. Nice mouth feel and tannins. Good acidity. Probably near its peak but should drink well for several years. Grest with tapas and food. (1993 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 8/3/2016 & rated 89 points: At the winery with Letizia: Hot year is reflected in this '07 with sweet ripe red fruits, balsamic, oxidative notes, a touch musty, 15.5% Not aging very great IMHO, but still very interesting and intriguing old notes. (1365 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 11/21/2015 & rated 91 points: This 100% Nerello Mascalese from high altitude vineyards on Mt. Etna is showing very well. Clear, medium ruby with garnet hues - Burgundy-like in appearance. The nose is similarly dominated by tart red cherry and currant fruit, herbs, violet flowers and asian spices. The nose is medium in intensity but continues to evolve with air and swirling and reveals a pleasant, smoky minerality. The palate is dry, with medium to medium (+) acidity and medium (+) tannins. The alcohol is listed at 14% but seems lower, resulting in a lovely, medium-odied, food-friendly wine. The ethereal, high-altitude, mouthfeel contrasts nicely with the medium (+) flavor intensity and length. This is a very complex wine, made from old vines, and aged for a couple of years in large French oak casks. Drinking well now, but it has plenty of life left. Worth seeking out. (3340 views)
Tasted by Cooky474 on 10/20/2015 & rated 90 points: PnP after work with dinner. Lovely wine and sadly the last of the case. Appearance is a very light, translucent red, nose of red berries, medium body and medium-long finish. Really enjoy this wine every time. (3352 views)
Tasted by Burgfiendnyc on 10/11/2015 & rated 90 points: Smokey red fruits, and nice minerality that's showing very well. Tannins are well integrated with exceptional balance throughout. This is good juice and with a decant paired well with pizza. Rebuy for sure. (3114 views)
Tasted by SteveG on 9/17/2015 & rated 90 points: From memory. Light garnet with pinky-purple edge. As others have noted, fresh and lively, primarily red fruits with balancing tannins. The finish included a slightly green funk, otherwise clean. Enjoyed with angel hair marinara and meatballs. (2793 views)
Tasted by Gian on 9/15/2015 & rated 90 points: Again I enjoyed this wine , pepper , red fruits , tobacco , full bodied , balanced with refresching acidity , quite long finish (2617 views)
Tasted by mauropallido on 8/9/2015 & rated 92 points: Dall'ultima bottiglia che ho bevuto 2 anni e mezzo fa, il vino è maturato parecchio, questa bottiglia è già abbastanza evoluta.
(1400 views)
Tasted by Gian on 7/11/2015 & rated 89 points: Nice red light color , nose of small red fruits , pepper , coffe , on the palate savory, fresh acidity and long finish. I like this wine every time (1338 views)
Tasted by Gooka on 3/23/2015 & rated 92 points: Beautiful, smooth, strawberries, cherries, flowers and hints of earth. Balanced and so delicious. Drinkíng well, I hope I had more. (1536 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 2/27/2015 & rated 91 points: The Wine Night at Bellevue Wine Storage - Part 1 (Bellevue, WA): Delicious wine. Fresh tasting with juicy acidity and a light mineral driven texture. Lots of red cherry, pomegranate and currant. (2054 views)
Tasted by ATBridge on 12/25/2014: Astringent. I think cooked. Too bad as I was most interested in tasting this wine. (2223 views)
Tasted by Sijan on 10/30/2014: This was probably the consensus favorite in our tasting of wines from Etna. Less funky than the others & more classical in style with rich nose & good red berry fruit on palate. A good food wine. (2282 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 10/19/2014 & rated 91 points: Light red. Redcurrant like acidity. Very intense, with fine tannins and a long finish. Has mellowed into a lovely mouthful of wine. (2265 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 10/5/2014 & rated 91 points: Excellent now as the abrasive elements have mellowed. Great in its own or with snacks--even slightly spicy ones. (2036 views)
Tasted by mwanasheria on 8/11/2014 & rated 94 points: Nose of ripe strawberries.mon the palate dark fruit, crushed rock, dry extract. Great. (2151 views)
Tasted by MJHDC on 3/27/2014: This has medium to light weight and is very smooth and polished. If I were nitpicking, this could use a tad more of the volcanic soil notes that are found in other Etna wines. Still a very nice and drinkable example. (2396 views)

(PASSOPISCIARO) Etna Dear Friends, We've offered quite a few wines from Andrea Franchetti of late but they all deserve attention and then some. His portfolio has never been stronger and we will continue to present the wines as they are released to us. While I was in Puglia last month, I nursed a bottle of the 2007 Passopisciaro over nearly a week's time (two of those days with Frank Cornelissen, who was quite smitten with the quality of this wine) - if there was ever a poster child for a new sense of the modern, it is Passopisciaro - a wine bent on allowing the century old (or even pre-phyloxera) vines to speak for themselves...with the small stamp of Franchetti's Fellini-esque carnival dangling underneath the surface. Where the 2006 version of this wine had power first, this wine seduces with its velvet dancing texture and mountain fruit. Almost an oxymoron at this latitude (it would be like calling grapes grown on Kilimanjaro cool-climate), the towering scope and weather producing influence of Mt. Etna cannot be underestimated. This is an area that has a ski area perched above palm trees and cactus (think Mauna Kea but still active). Like 2008 in Bordeaux (versus 2005), I'm not sure many of the 2006 Etna examples are "better" than their more elegant 2007 counterparts - they are just different. Whatever the reasoning, this is a 2007 that should be tasted by all collectors bent on education and curiosity regarding one of the more cutting edge (and dynamic) regions of the world: VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for subtle grace and eccentric exoticism in a Burgundian frame: 2007 Passopisciaro "Passopisciaro" (Andrea Franchetti/Etna) (this is not the Guardiola) 2007 Passopisciaro "Passopisciaro" (Andrea Franchetti/Etna) 1.5lt 2007 Passopisciaro "Passopisciaro" (Andrea Franchetti/Etna) 3.0lt ...we also have EXTREMELY LIMITED large formats of the 2006 Le Cupole from Tenuta di Trinoro. If you have a dinner party or large gathering in the fall (or even at holiday time), this is a very reasonably priced magnum (or 3.0/6.0) at the highest end: 2006 Le Cupole (Trinoro) 1.5lt (the magnums are bottled from the best 2-3 barrels) 2006 Le Cupole (Trinoro) 3.0lt (hand bottled, hand corked from the very best barrel) 2006 Le Cupole (Trinoro) 6.0lt (also hand bottled, hand corked from the very best barrel) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy6891 Italy6892 Italy6893 Italy6894 Italy6895 Italy9896

About Passopisciaro

Passopisciaro sits high atop an old volcanic flow on the northern slope of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, on the island of Sicily. It was acquired by the Tuscan visionary Andrea Franchetti in 2000 who then proceeded to restore its old farm, cellars, and terraced vineyards across the face of the volcano. Passopisciaro’s vineyards are located in various contradas, or crus, between 1,800-3,600 feet above sea level, and its microclimate is almost alpine with intense sunlight and drastic temperature shifts between day and night. The growing season often stretches into November. The soil is comprised of various types of volcanic ash which, combined with the diffused light, diurnal shifts, and varying altitudes, creates a highly unique growing environment for wine. Viticulture and winemaking here have extremely ancient origins, with the first written reports dating from the third century BC, yet Franchetti’s arrival on Etna helped to initiate the renaissance of quality viticulture on the mountain. According to Jancis Robinson, “the Etna wine revolution began with 2001, the first vintage for Passopisciaro, a small estate founded on ancient, high-altitude vines by Andrea Franchetti.”

Around the winery, located in the contrada of Guardiola, Franchetti decided to plant a small amount of the varieties Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’Affile at a density of 12,000 vines per hectare on thin lavic soil to produce his flagship wine at the estate, aptly named Franchetti. The blend varies with each vintage, and while rare, the result is sometimes a 100% Petit Verdot, as in 2006 and 2010. On Etna, due to the volcanic soil, Petit Verdot becomes more peppery and spicy, leaner and stiffer in body. Cesanese d’Affile, a grape from Lazio that Franchetti first planted in Tuscany, is a more gentle, aromatic counter to the structure of the Petit Verdot, although it has great aging potential. The wine represents Franchetti’s attempt to create a completely different wine on Etna, more evocative of the thick plumes of smoke the volcano emits than the lighter, indigenous variety Nerello Mascalese. In addition to this proprietary blend, Franchetti also produces an elegant, mineral-driven Chardonnay Guardiola Bianco and a series of six wines that express the effects of different altitudes and lava flows on the local grape Nerello Mascalese: Passopisciaro Rosso and five individual Contrada wines.

In addition to Passopisciaro, Andrea Franchetti also owns another unique winery—Tenuta di Trinoro, located in the confluence of southern Tuscany, Lazio, and Umbria. The wines of both estates are astounding examples of the benefits of the relentless pursuit of quality and distinctiveness in extreme growing environments.
