Tasted by timewithwine on 2/2/2023: This is a blend of 92% Zinfandel with 3% Petite Sirah, and 5% Alicante Bouschet. The color is deeply hued. On the nose, Zin funk, rhubarb and cherry with still a touch of brown sugar, maybe. Some nice herbs and dusty rose A full mid-palate and longer finish of vanilla, coffee and mocha. The mouthfeel is dusty smooth. This is a wine that is hitting its stride in a very pleasant way. Some heavy sediment lines the shoulder of the bottle. 14.3% alc. With country ham in red-eye gravy over polenta (an excellent pairing). Unfortunately, my last bottle. 02.02.23. Recommended. (545 views)
Tasted by gjv115 on 2/19/2021 & rated 92 points: Pnp. Beautiful fruity nose. Smooth and balanced. Excellent, bright candy fruit flavor. Not overly complex at first but eventually got some complexity. Beautiful, Flawless bottle.. Drinking great and I don't see how it will improve but it's in no danger of going bad anytime soon (1333 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 11/10/2019: A blend of 92% Zin and 5% Alicante Bouschet and 3% Petite Sirah. Magenta on the rim and deep burgundy at the core. The nose is dominated by rhubarb, brown sugar, crushed dried roses and something (pleasingly) herbal. Flavors track the nose with some Zin funk and alcoholic heat on the finish. And also something sweet in the finish. Gone are the flavors of cinnamon, plum, and coffee flavors. The tannins are dusty. This is very ready to drink and probably beginning to plateau down. 14.3% alc. With homemade pizza of sausage and pepperoni. Recommended. (1026 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 4/8/2017 & rated 87 points: drank over 2 nights. first day this was OTT and drink like wine fruit punch. mellowed out a bit on 2nd night but still a really big wine at 10 years old. well made but not necessarily my cup of tea (3312 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 11/21/2015 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby. Black cherries; blackberries; and spicy, woody, forestal notes on the nose. Big, rich, mouth coating, with dark, ripe fruit and noticeable oak notes of vanilla, spice. Medium acidity, medium-low tannin, good length. Not a shy zin, flirting with being too big and ripe, but somehow holding the line well. Very good. (4811 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 6/9/2015 & rated 92 points: Dark red color. Deeply fruited nose, of raspberry, cherry, black pepper, both weedy and having a touch of wood spice. On arrival, medium-low tannin and medium acidity - vivacious stuff. In the mouth, it's ripe not overripe fruit, and what a blast that is. Huge black pepper, some vanilla and chocolate, and a real zing of acidity in the finish. This is about as good as zinfandel gets. Bottle #6 of six. (4999 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 8/16/2014: This is the first time I’ve pulled the ‘07 version of this Ridge Zin. It’s a blend of 92% Zin and 5% Alicante Bouschet and 3% Petite Sirah. This is a rich, bright wine showing flavors of red cherry, cinnamon, Zin funk, cinnamon, plum, coffee, and more cinnamon. Not nearly as much brown sugar as I had expected. The tannins are dusty. The mouthfeel is fresh, clean and a tad tannic. It’s an excellent match for the shortribs. On the 3rd day, it’s richer, bigger and better. 14.3% alc. With (beef) shortribs (G&G recipe). 08.16-18.14 Recommended. (554 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 5/31/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark red and violet color. Huge nose of ripe raspberries and red cherries, black pepper, vanilla, earthy and brushy notes, fresh sawn wood. Wow, rare to perceive the wood in this bottleing; adds complexity, force. On arrival, medium tannin and medium acidity. Flavors are immediate and forceful: deep fruit, black pepper, vanilla and chocolate. Spectacularly long finish, well-fruited and spicy. Bottle #5 of six. (5870 views)
Tasted by MLipton on 1/22/2014: Pulled straight from our very cold cellar. Cold, it was quite primary with a bit of VA, a bit of vanilla and a slight lactic note. As it warmed, the plummy fruit came to the fore. There was a good spine of acidity that kept the wine seeming fresh, even at 14.3% ABV. Still young, it has years yet ahead of it. (6029 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 1/11/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark red-violet color. Aroma of black and red raspberry, vanilla, brushy California hillside growth, black pepper, then more vanilla and sawdust. On entry, medium tannin and balanced acidity; smooth texture for old vine but young zinfandel wine. Flavor is Zin-berry (Doug Nalle's term) brambly cherry-berry fruit, with vaniall and black pepper. Heads towards the richness of a framboise. Luscious finish, this stuff is ready to drink and by no means in danger of falling apart for at least another couple years. Bottle #4 of six. (4468 views)
Tasted by fredb on 10/3/2013: Dark red color, nearly opaque. Rich aromas of vanilla, raspberry, cherry, and blackberry. Palate has sweet berry notes without seeming jammy (but heading that way) with vanilla and briar accents. Drinking well as a young Pagani and expect further positive development for my tastes. Drink or hold. (3188 views)
Tasted by Dan & Krista Stockman on 9/30/2013 & rated 91 points: Fabulous. Gorgeous and silky, this wine is absolutely beautiful. Wow. (3314 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 7/19/2013 & rated 91 points: One of the better Ridge zins. Full bodied, integrated fruit, drinking well. Probably would go several more years. (2361 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 7/4/2013 & rated 91 points: Dark red-purple. Sweet young wine nose, giving raspberry, vanilla, spicy mixed herbs and a little roof tar. On entry, medium tannin and acids, balanced and harmonious enough for holding or current drinking. Lush cherry fruit and mixed herbs on the palate. Delightful wine from the finest vintage of that decade for zinfandel cultivation. Bottle #3 of six. (2032 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 2/24/2013 & rated 92 points: Decanted an hour, consumed over the next three. Old school Zin. Bramble, peppery dark fruits. Drank great with food, less well but still nice on its own. In a good place for drinking, still has time left. (2817 views)
Tasted by Cadby on 1/19/2013 & rated 93 points: 2007 Ridge Pagani Ranch ++++ $30

Posh, elegant and gracious. Hepburn in a bottle.

Tasted by David J Cooper on 9/6/2012 & rated 88 points: Dark red. Stewed fruit, ripe, blackberry and plums. Nice dark fruit flavours and a long tannic finish. OK but not great. (3145 views)
Tasted by ross.b on 9/2/2012 & rated 90 points: Outstanding. Smooth, with subtle fruit and just a hint of heat on the finish. One more bottle to go... (2857 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 8/24/2012 & rated 92 points: When drinking a Zin, the first adjective to jump to mind usually isn't "elegant," but that's what screamed out to me with the first whiff and sip of this beauty. Wonderful typicity (cherries, cracked pepper, etc.) with additional old vine complexity, but it's the balance and restraint (love how the alcohol stays in check) that make this wine special and why it's worth the premium you pay for Ridge. (2955 views)
Tasted by pschultz on 7/13/2012 & rated 92 points: My god this was about perfect for a Ridge Zin. Peaking right now. Warm pie spices, leather and walnuts on the nose. Great finish. Black cherry, licorice and spice on the palate. (2580 views)
Tasted by Battleship on 6/11/2012 & rated 92 points: Opened alongside 07 Lytton Springs and this one took a little longer to open and really blossomed into a very high class Zin showing with great berry and spice and an added element of smokiness that finished like a long streak of velvet. (2723 views)
Tasted by tplskylrk on 2/26/2012: Last bottle. There were many reasons to quit the ATP and this was not one of them. Great stuff. (2901 views)
Tasted by tplskylrk on 2/14/2012 & rated 91 points: NIce stuff, right perfect to drink. DArk dark garnet. Nose a bit hard to get much, light smoky fruit. Bit sweetness. NIce palate feel, balanced, integrated, nice fruit wave, expands in the palate, wow, extends to a decent finish. Went well w the pizza adding some spice. Working the acid of the tomato and cutting the fat from the cheese. This still has a nice tight finish. fresh, so drinking great w time left. Not zery zinny. (3093 views)

Tasted by krhaugh on 11/25/2011 & rated 88 points: Not much improvement from July. Better than the Geyserville, but hat really isn't saying much. (3469 views)

Zinfandel

ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-Zinfandel

Pagani Ranch

The old Pagani Ranch on the east side of Sonoma Valley. 100-year-old zinfandel, petite sirah, alicaante, mataro, and carignane vines.

(Fall 2012 Ridge Wine Club notes:)

Since 1991, Ridge has made zinfandel from the old Pagani vineyard on the east-facing side of the Sonoma Valley. All the vines were planted 90 to 115 years ago.

This is a fine example of what we look for in a vineyard: low-yielding old vines, carefully tended by a quality-conscious family who, in this case, have worked the land for four generations.

The climate here is generally cooler than at Lytton Springs.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
