Tasted by David Meddings on 4/30/2023 & rated 91 points: Consistent with last note - unfortunately my last bottle. Lovely wine - very complete. (639 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 11/9/2022 & rated 92 points: Dark garnet. Fragrant bouquet with a piercing note of cassis occasionally perceptible - particularly with little wine in the glass. Palate is a rich tapestry of cassis, violet, sandalwood and a note of alcoholic heat that creeps in on the long final. Tannins fully integrated, medium to big bodied and great vibrancy.

This is drinking very well - polished, complex and balanced. Great value wine with a rare degree of interest for this price point. (833 views)
Tasted by Lord Rodney on 5/13/2022 & rated 90 points: Bought a few of these recently because of the low price and tried one tonight- a very pleasant suprise - Happy Great Prayer Day!! 2007 Tenuta di Trinoro, Le Cupole - it’s finally a lovely long weekend and we are having roast pork with black rice salad! And wanted to try this 15 year old Tuscan wine. This is not normally our territory but as it turned out it went very well with dinner! Apparently this is a Bordeaux blend and based on Cabernet Franc. The colour is dee dark red with a slight bricking starting to appear on the rim. The nose has cherries, blackcurrants, plums, green bell peppers, tobacco, chocolate and cedar wood. In the mouth the wine is very soft, creamy and has loads of black cherries along with more chocolate and some tobacco. To us this is not far from being fully mature but if desired this could go for a while longer - a nice surprise!😎✌🏻#tenutaditrinoro #tenutaditrinorolecupole #lecupole #toscana #lecupole2007 #toscana2007 #2007 (1249 views)
Tasted by dfeiner on 5/11/2022 & rated 91 points: Drinking exceptionally well. Plenty of time left (1183 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 1/25/2021 & rated 93 points: A blend of Cabernet Franc (40%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Sauvignon (22%) and Petit Verdot (8%). Harvested in 54 separate pickings and vinifications, all grapes fully destemmed, fermented in 4000-liter stainless steel tanks for 15 days, then aged for another 3 days on the lees before racking the wine off the skins. MLF for 1/3 of the wine in the vats in contact with skins before racking and and for 2/3 in French oak barriques of 2nd, 3rd and 4th use. Aged for 8 months in French oak barriques of 2nd, 3rd and 4th use, followed by another 10 months in concrete tanks. Bottled unfiltered in March 2009. 13,5%. Total production 85,000 bottles. Drank from a magnum.

Dark, moderately translucent blood-red color. Juicy, clean and fruity nose with seductive, sweet-toned aromas of juicy blackcurrants and ripe red plums, some sweet red cherries, light autumnal notes of damp forest, a little bit of blueberry, a hint of pipe tobacco and a touch of raw meat. The wine is juicy, ripe and quite dense on the palate with a rather full body and fruit-forward flavors of fresh dark plums, ripe blueberries and blackcurrants, some licorice root, light notes of tobacco, a woody hint of pencil shavings and an autumnal touch of leafy yet not herbaceous character. The overall feel is enjoyably savory, rather high in acidity and quite firm, thanks to the moderately grippy medium-plus tannins. The finish is long, juicy and gently grippy with flavors of ripe blueberries and cherries, some fresh forest fruits, light plummy tones, a little bit of graphite, a hint of pipe tobacco and a touch of meaty umami. The tannins make the wine end on a somewhat astringent yet not aggressive nor austere note.

A very lovely, pure and harmonious effort. Probably the best vintage of Le Cupole this side of the millennium. Although the wine is modeled after Bordeaux wines, the wine really doesn't feel like a classic Bordeaux. Fortunately it doesn't feel like a super-polished, extracted and markedly modern faux-Bordeaux or Super-Tuscan either. It is built more like an old school Brunello or Chianti Classico, but aromatically feels closer to Bordeaux than Tuscany. At least this magnum was in a very lovely shape and most likely will continue to improve for years more, although it is drinking wonderfully right now. I'm not usually a big fan of Super-Tuscan reds but this was really nice. Recommended. (2414 views)
 Tasted by vanpe003 on 9/4/2020: Very port/amarone. (1567 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 6/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Definitely in a mature phase. More tertiary notes, a bit less fruit. Seems more rustic now than the last bottle. My last one :( (1446 views)
Tasted by hargy on 2/22/2019 & rated 88 points: showing its age now - odd bottle? (1761 views)
Tasted by Everything Ahead on 9/21/2018 & rated 93 points: Beautiful nose of thyme, sour cherry, autumn leaves and hints of funk. Delicious, medium/full bodied on the palate. Could easily go another 5 years, but it is drinking nicely now. Wish I had more bottles ... (2254 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 7/15/2018 & rated 92 points: Notes from 3rd day after opening. Inky dark garnet with some bricking. Dark plum fruit nose with a note of graphite. Round entry, slow build through cough drop black cherry sweetness into mid-palate of cassis etched onto a background of fine grained tannins. Acid and sweetness in the mix, with a touch of heat on the long final.

Overall a very polished package. Excellent with food or on its own, and at an interesting point where tertiary notes are asserting themselves. I think this easily has another 3 years, and quite likely 5. Fantastic value and an interesting producer. (2159 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 6/16/2018 & rated 93 points: 3rd of 4. Another gorgeous bottle. Rich, but balanced. I love the Cab Franc influence here. Cassis and plum compote. Long finish. Almost 11 yo and going strong. Glad I have one left. Served blind, I would think this was $100. (1991 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 3/24/2018 & rated 92 points: Plush. Very well made. Really in a good place. Should hold for years. (2009 views)
Tasted by RDHudak on 12/14/2017 & rated 91 points: C: Dark ruby, with no signs of age. N: Loads of dark and red fruit, leather, dusty cellar and bramble. Smells like a a freshly bottled wine, with loads of vibrant fruit. P: Wow, exuberant and young, I would peg this as a young BdM. P: Awkward upon opening, this blossomed with a short decant and got better over our lasagna dinner. Medium body, tannin and +acidity. F: Medium, but very well done. The cork was absolutely perfect and I am really starting to subscribe to the Garagiste provenance philosophy. CT states that this should have been drunk in 2015, but this wine has plenty of life. I'd definitely buy more. Easy 91+++ (2143 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 8/9/2016 & rated 91 points: I paid $20 for this and it punches way above its price point. Still opaque, but the robust fruit is starting to tone down. Nice long finish. (3579 views)
Tasted by Ideasthatstick on 1/27/2016: Another nice bottle. It is just a very nice bottle. There is a ton of great fruit. There is a lot of character. This is a fine bottle. I love the cool fruit, the rounded confident character. I got a few of these in the first round and loved it. The fruit pushed forward, and that was an asset, this time out there is a similar character, only more mature. This is great bottle of cool lean wine. The core of it is highly expressive, fruit forward, moderately acidic. This is a classy expression, I'm sorry I have so few left, yet very happy Rimmerman re-introduced this. Could it be better? Probably not. This is a bottle screaming with character. With truth and confident personality. (4037 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 11/23/2015: PNP and very pretty right from the get go. Unfortunately others also figured that out and wine gone in a heartbeat (4031 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 6/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Decanted 1.5 hours. Dark garnet. Voluptuous bouquet showing plums, some spice. Palate is very similar - round entry filling out to all corners of the mouth with a great balance of dark fruits, cinnamon sandalwood spice, very finely etched oak and fine fine tannins. Acidity in very nice balance.

This is drinking very well now but would seem to have at least 3-5 years in front of it. I think this wine benefits from a longish decant. (4611 views)
Tasted by Greg_O on 4/26/2015 & rated 92 points: Gorgeous nose of perfume, olive, dark fruit and chocolate. Ripe fruit, high acidity, med grip and tannins, some green notes provide the clue that this tuscan wine is bdx varietals and 40% cab franc at that. The 15.5% alcohol and fruit are balanced really well by high acidity and freshness. While this wine flirts with my limits for ripeness and oak it does so in a way that respects the place, varietals, and style which just exudes sexiness and class. I will keep Le Cupole on the buy list based on this latest showing. (4895 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 2/24/2015: Nose - casis, olive
Mouth - drinking great, singing, complex red & dark fruit, licorice, fully dry but gives the impression of sweet blackberries and cassis. nice acidity and sleek tannins leads to a very balanced drink. Excellent. (3225 views)
Tasted by ScottGoodwin on 2/8/2015 & rated 89 points: Color is still totally opaque. Nose has menthol, mint and some tobacco. Touch of green bell pepper notes but very subtle. Palate shows charcoal tinged cool black fruits. Still some decent tannic structure. Well integrated acidity. Definitely no where near over the hill. (2512 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 2/1/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark garnet, full bodied
Lots of terroir on the nose. Blackberry, raspberry, red licorice, slight oak
Dry, medium finish. Soft tannins, nicely balanced, wet oak, berries and dark fruit, sour cherries

This was an excellent stand alone wine that is drinking perfectly (2052 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 12/19/2014 & rated 88 points: Popped and poured. Followed after 2 hours. Dark garnet, faint bricking. Fragrant bouquet of raspberry, tobacco, leather and sous-bois. Full bodied dark fruit attack that quickly ratchets up to an acidic tinged mid-palate flaunting dark cherry against some rather coarse tannins. Final is a bit muddled with some prickly heat and astringent corners sticking out.

Overall this feels a bit rough and would do better with food than as it was here on its own. I sense this could easily go another 5 years and probably needs at least two for some of the tannins to better integrate. (2362 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 11/27/2014: Earth and funk and dark fruit and a sort of spice or edge that is slightly herbal and I think cab franc
Solid wine (2131 views)
Tasted by nefarm on 11/4/2014 & rated 91 points: I love this wine. Still fresh. Everything is there. A definite repurchase. (2173 views)
Tasted by tward on 10/16/2014: No notes, but this was disjointed and heavy and became a bit baked after air. It was drinkable, but not very enjoyable. It should be paired against something robust. Glad this was the last one. (2182 views)

Garagiste (12/27/2010)
(CUPOLE Trinoro) Celebration Dear Friends, I hope your holiday weekend was a special one! To kick off a celebratory week, today’s offer ranks as one of the very best price/value bargains of 2010...so I saved it for last. We’ve offered the 2007 Le Cupole 3-4 other times (at a much higher tariff) but we continue to receive re-order requests at a consistent clip. That typically means the wine has hit a nerve with the Email List as the requests have come from a diverse and wide range of palates. At , it was already one of the best deals in high-end Tuscan wine, at today’s celebratory price, it’s just about crazy. Grown with strict organic principals that utilize a series of clay, lime and grapefruit seed as “pesticides” instead of chemicals, Andrea Franchetti labors over the upbringing of this wine with the same detail as his $200-300 Tenuta di Trinoro. From a preponderance of estate grown Cabernet Franc, this is a large-scaled but still medium-weight and elegant rendition of Bordeaux meets Tuscany with a decided slant toward the style of something like Tertre Roteboeuf. As a comparison to what’s available on the world market, there really is no other comparison at the level (maybe something like Ornellaia’s Le Serre Nuove but that is and more obviously extracted/oaked?): Ian d’Agata: “Only Andre Franchetti, an enological genius, can amuse himself with small percentage of 3% Cesanese, 2% of uva di Troia and the like, all grape varieties that are atypical for the area he has chosen to cultivate them in. Le Cupole is amazingly rich in ripe fresh fruit and has to be considered a true masterpiece, also in view of its very fair price. You won’t find a better bottle of red wine anywhere”. Whatever you make of it, this is a contender for the #1 deal of 2010 and the bottled wine is deserving of the accolades (not just printed words of praise). If you have any interest in this wine, please let Niki know at your earliest convenience. Garagiste (3/29/2010)
(CUPOLE Trinoro) Cupole Redux Dear Friends, Another pleasant surprise this morning - a second parcel of Tenuta di Trinoro's 2007 Le Cupole is on the way - directly from the winery cellar. If you are looking for provenance, it doesn't get much closer to the source than this. Already an email list favorite for its sultry style, this wine continue to integrate and improve with an exotic "please drink me" flair that sets it apart. For the tariff, I will reiterate its status among the top price/value candidates in all of Tuscany, especially compared to the Cabernet-based entrants from Bolgheri (although the Le Cupole is from Sarteano, which is actually closer to Lago Trasimeno and Umbria than the Mediterranean). In addition, it would not be out of place as the second wine of a Bordeaux stand-out like Tertre Roteboeuf (at a fraction of the cost). The 2007 is the most critically acclaimed version of this wine yet - it has become something of an enigma on our shores so I will leave it at that: This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance VERY RARE in the US: 2007 Tenuta di Trinoro "Le Cupole" IGT (750ml) (the $30 price on this wine in Europe is not the norm anymore) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy5488

(Tenuta di Trinoro Le Cupole IGT 3.0lt) Trinoro Dear Friends, If you are spending $50-100 or more on Pichon-Baron, Clos du Marquis, Ornellaia or even something like Tertre Roteboeuf, this wine should peak your interest as it is one of the very finest price/value stars in the world of Cabernet and Franc blends. In a blind tasting with any of the wines above, the 2007 Le Cupole will more than hold its own and the exotic twist from the Tuscan sun sets it apart. This wine has been very hard for us to obtain this year as it's been equally as popular in Europe as in the US. Whatever meager amount came to our shores appears to have disappeared at this point (when you read Antonio Galloni's review below you will understand why this has sold through the market so quickly - the hype is justified). I'm not going to go any further as quantities are too limited. With that, here goes - this one speaks for itself... This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance: 2007 Tenuta di Trinoro "Le Cupole" IGT (750ml) (I'm not sure any exists in the US at this point for a price comparison) 2007 Tenuta di Trinoro "Le Cupole" IGT 1.5lt 2007 Tenuta di Trinoro "Le Cupole" IGT 3.0lt Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy3211 Italy3212 Italy3213

About Tenuta di Trinoro

Tenuta di Trinoro can be found among the soft undulating hills of the Val d’Orcia, in the province of Siena, a region recently named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here visionary winemaker Andrea Franchetti cleared land to plant vines where sheep and wild roses had been more common than vines over the past century. The isolated estate occupies an area of about 500 acres, of which 52 are planted with vines. It is located high opposite the slopes of Mount Amiata, between 1,475 and 2,000 feet above sea level, where the eroded rock of the mountain gives way to the limestone and clay of an ancient sea floor.

From the beginning Franchetti set out a meticulous viticultural program designed to maximize wine quality by encouraging fruit ripening and concentration of flavor and color in the wines. The original vine material came from grafts of some of the best vines in Bordeaux. High-density plantings mean the vines must compete for precious nourishment, thickening the grapes’ skins and driving the ripening process. In addition, green harvesting is aggressively used, with up to 60% of the grapes cast to the ground in order to protect only the healthiest bunches. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately in small fermentation tanks, and only the free run juice makes it into tank. The wines age for eight months in French oak to add complexity and enhance longevity before spending 15 months in large cement vats. These practices all combine to yield what is, according to Antonio Galloni, “one of the most iconic wines being made in Tuscany today.”

Despite the winery’s Tuscan location, the estate produces only Bordeaux varietals—Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot—instead of the traditional Sangiovese. Tenuta di Trinoro is the flagship wine of its namesake winery, and only several hundred cases are produced each vintage, making it highly sought-after by collectors. The flagship blend varies based on the vintage, but it is predominantly Cabernet Franc and Merlot, along with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Tenuta di Trinoro also produces other distinctive red wines focused on single varieties including Palazzi (100% Merlot) and Magnacosta (100% Cabernet Franc), as well as several other wines.

In addition to Tenuta di Trinoro, Andrea Franchetti also owns another unique winery: Passopisciaro on Mount Etna in Sicily. The wines of both estates are astounding examples of the benefits of the relentless pursuit of quality and distinctiveness in extreme growing environments.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
