Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 765 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Lordswood on 3/30/2023 & rated 90 points: A rash purchase this week based on a previous tasting note (but thank you RCOLLELA). Some concern that this is too old was exacerbated when we saw the plastic cork. However, there is still quite a lot of red and dark red fruit there, with a finish full of chocolate and a bit of coffee. The acidity is extraordinary, and brilliantly judged and keeps it clean and exceptional throughout. Fruit came and went during the 2 hours we had it in our glasses with arguably the best moments at about the hour mark. At the right price (sub £19 in our case) this is still a canny buy, but drink it SOON! (659 views)
Tasted by Rcolella on 12/12/2022 & rated 90 points: This wine Has intensity of dark fruits raspberries and blackberries, hints of coffee, full bodied with long lasting tannins.
This wine is blended with 3 varieties og grapes Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Excellent drinking wine after 15 years of cellaring.
Drank on Dec 12, 2022 with company Anna and Frank Pompilio. (910 views)
Tasted by chifred on 8/15/2020: Still going strong (2003 views)
Tasted by acheng on 12/6/2019 & rated 88 points: Well, still tasting very fresh despite it 12 years of age. A savoury rich Tuscan sun kind of nose with light touch of acidity and no discernible tannin (2313 views)
Tasted by BobbaWA on 11/22/2019 & rated 91 points: Plum & tannin, rich and balanced. Holding up nicely for an old bird. (2225 views)
Tasted by chifred on 10/27/2019 & rated 89 points: PnP, 60F. Deep purple, nose with cranberry, forest floor. Medium-light wt, good acid and dry tannins. Some fresh red fruit and chalk. Still nice but not gaining anything! Drink! (1787 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 2/10/2019 & rated 91 points: Straight ahead very good super Tuscan in a very good drinking window right now. Popped and poured. Overt nose of black fruit and. cassis with tobacco notes. The palate is full bodied and packed with flavor. There isn’t a lot of room for subtlety here but on the other hand there isn’t much to complain about. This can age 5-10 more years but not sure it will develop. (2230 views)
Tasted by BobbaWA on 2/8/2019 & rated 92 points: "Guess the wine, dear." "Cabernet?" Well, there's cab in there. Chocolate, plums, and a hint of old world terroir, or whatever they call that in Italian. Thanks, Jenny! (1363 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 12/27/2018 & rated 92 points: This has evolved beautifully into something special, especially considering its price. Balanced and harmonious, great sweetness, fruit and overall energy. This punches above its weight class; I paid about $22 for this on release. 92pts++ (1266 views)
Tasted by chifred on 12/1/2018 & rated 91 points: Opened 1 hour, no decant, no debris. Good nose of fruit and bark, smooth with minimal tannin, rich and ripe. Long finish. Really nice, each bottle is better but may start a decline soon. (1261 views)
Tasted by hoops92 on 8/18/2017 & rated 84 points: A bit off - likely past its window (3793 views)
Tasted by Zed57 on 4/20/2017 & rated 93 points: It has really come together nicely. It goes down so easily that you forget how complex it truly is. The focused mineral and blackberry plum finish goes on and on. (4853 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 2/28/2017 & rated 92 points: First bottle since March, 2016 and the last of my case purchased in 2011. This was the best one yet. Amazing how this has continued to improve over the years. Hard to believe that I initially (see my 11/10/2011 note) scored this at just 86 points. Full-bodied and very rich now, bursting with ripe, delicious black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit. Shows excellent depth and focus on the mid-palate with a pleasant, moderate acidity. Very long and smooth on the finish, with lingering notes of oak, mineral and spice. So balanced and flat-out delicious. Sad to see my last bottle gone.

Tasted by Sijan on 1/22/2017 & rated 87 points: Still drinking pretty well. Decent fruit & acid, well balanced. Nothing magical, but a very serviceable red. Paired well with pizza. (5501 views)
Tasted by John O' on 12/18/2016: A bit of a mess on the pop. After about 1/2 hour really started to sing. (3936 views)
Tasted by chifred on 7/17/2016: 55F/decant (low sediment) then after 1.5 hours: definitely needs some open time starts disjointed/tannic/acid but comes together nicely. Nose of black fruit, cassis, hint of cocoa. Medium body with soft tannins and palate of integrated fruit and mineral with hint of forest floor. Medium finish. No opinion on how long this will last. (4615 views)
Tasted by Delli on 4/9/2016 & rated 92 points: Consistent with my last note but the nose was more pronounced. in its sweet spot and drinking very well 5+13+16+8=92 (5008 views)
Tasted by Pfleonard on 3/4/2016 & rated 91 points: This one is rally aging well. Complex stewed fruits and a lingering finish. Impressed as expecting it to be somewhat overrated. It's wasn't. (5075 views)
Tasted by rsazima on 12/28/2015: Drank at the beach last summer, good. (2955 views)
Tasted by DTWOB on 12/6/2015 & rated 92 points: Has cellared very well, opulent nose, well integrated fruit, acidity, tannins and heat. Smooth, long finish. (5754 views)
Tasted by Duderino on 11/16/2015 & rated 91 points: Drank my last one. This was one of those wines that I wish I still had a case of.....really nice. (4211 views)
Tasted by napasoutherner on 10/14/2015 & rated 89 points: Same as the other two. A very average Tuscan that seemed to be held in high esteem by WS. While not bad it wasn't great or had any real personality to it. Popped and pour but it didn't evolve much over the hour. Had with pasta. Flat finish. (3980 views)
Tasted by napasoutherner on 10/9/2015 & rated 88 points: Average Tuscan. Tannic and light (3138 views)
Tasted by napasoutherner on 9/30/2015 & rated 85 points: Not a very good wine. Flat, almost turned. If you have this wine I'd recommend drinking now before it goes completely bad. (2997 views)

Brancaia

Producer website

U.S. Importer?

Casa Brancaia was founded in 1981 by the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer. It is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The vineyard experienced a quasi vertical takeoff, as it already won with the 1983 vintage won first place at a major Chianti Classico tasting. This rapid success is the friendship with the Mazzei family, owners of the famous Castello di Fonterutoli owe. In their cellar, the wines of Casa Brancaia were pressed up to the 1997 vintage and expanded. Since 1998, the wines in their own, vinified using the most modern principles built cellar. The management of the property taken over in 1999 the daughter of Barbara Kronenberg-Widmer and her husband Martin Kronenberg. They are supported by star winemaker Dr. Carlo Ferrini. La Brancaia is already one of the flagship company of Tuscany and receives for its wines every year national and international awards. Brancaia Casa also has a winery in Maremma. From there comes the Ilatraia.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
