Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of potpourri, roast meat, sandalwood and pepper. Flavors of currants, plums and tart berries. Tart acidity, resolved tannin, full bodied. Drink now. Seriously. (1661 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 12/31/2017 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over 24 hours.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of rose petals, leather, smoke and cardamon. Flavors of Bing cherries, raspberries, plums and a touch of white pepper. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink now. (1643 views)
Tasted by fredman on 9/29/2013 & rated 90 points: What Mr. Brown said (5/27/13). (4293 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 5/27/2013 & rated 92 points: The wine is a deep, dark maroon color. The absolutely stunning nose has blackberries, cherries, minerals, eucalyptus, violets, Asian spices, licorice, and a touch of earthiness. This has medium to full body, moderate ripe tannins, and good acidity. This delivers a mouthful of juicy berries and spice up front with minerals, eucalyptus, and some earthiness kicking in on the back end. The finish is fairly long with nice lingering sweet fruit, spice, and minerals. (4728 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 1/26/2013 & rated 92 points: WIML92

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of Graham cracker, pepper, Kirsch and fresh cut flowers. Flavors of berries, raspberries and cherries. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannin, medium to full body. Drink now with some air or continue to hold. Should drink well for 3-5 years easily. (5448 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 11/23/2012 & rated 91 points: A bit more evolved than the last bottle I opened, especially after 2 hours, when the fruit emerged. Good structure, and a better finish than before. (4347 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 8/25/2012 & rated 90 points: A bit lighter than I'd expect from a syrah/mourvedre blend, and while I did enjoy the interplay between pepper and sweetness that the two varietals bring in this wine, it lacked complexity and richness. (4571 views)
Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 7/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Medium-bodied wine with bright fruit and a nice finish. (2295 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 3/27/2012 & rated 91 points: Soft, medium-bodied blackberry fruit with a little pencil lead and strawberry flavors, well balanced, silky, wished it had a little more depth and complexity (2456 views)
Tasted by Central Coast Wino on 3/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Just fantastic. Fresh and fruity nose, with fresh bright fruit on the mid palate and a smooth, silky finish. Wonderfully balanced. This wine is drinking perfectly now. (2089 views)
Tasted by pocchia on 8/18/2011 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured, well, sorta. Poured through an aerator into a decanter and tasted a few minutes later. Fabulous! Dark ruby, musty fruit, and a velvet mouthfeel of dark berries that are mildly sweet on the mid palate and full bodied on the back of my tongue. Love how it changes through my mouth! Stems up! (1834 views)
Tasted by Central Coast Wino on 6/30/2011 & rated 90 points: A nice, smooth, well balanced wine with lots of complex flavor. (2729 views)
Tasted by Central Coast Wino on 4/28/2011 & rated 90 points: Nicely balanced wine with fruit forward flavor. My recollection was that this was a bigger, bolder wine, which is what I was looking for. Nonetheless, a nice wine. (2950 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 11/30/2010: Full and heavy Paso fruit right up front on the nose. Also some strong sweet Grenache right across the mid-palate. Sweetly fruited and maybe a bit of aciditifcation. Something to think about at $36. (3449 views)
Tasted by wine maestro on 10/15/2010 & rated 90 points: Asian spices tempt the senses to get this Paso blend off the ground. The Avenger
name is given to a challenging wine circumstance Villa Creek faced one vintage.
The 2007 lives up to it's reputation by delivering fruit forward character defined
with an oak frame and a pronounced, defined finish. Pretty currant, red cherry
and a touch of raspberry grace this balanced, concentrated wine. Drink now,
but this Avenger is young and should improve further in the cellar. Villa Creek
tasting room - Paso Robles Harvest Festival. (3939 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 9/5/2010 & rated 92 points: Villa Creek Winery Tasting (Villa Creek Winery): Tasted non blind at the winery. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of currants, plums, berries and violets. Flavors of currants, plums, boysenberry and black cherries. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink now with some air or continue to hold. 91-92. (4464 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 8/22/2010 & rated 91 points: 2010 Family Winemakers Tasting San Francisco; 8/22/2010-8/23/2010 (Fort Mason Festival Pavillon, San Francisco, California): Deep black fruit, berry, licorice nose; tasty, black fruit, berry, licorice palate; medium-plus finish 91+ pts. (75% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache) (6379 views)
Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 8/8/2010 & rated 88 points: This wine appears to be a bit young. Out of the bottle, it was simple and almost slightly sweet. An hour of decanting brought a drastic improvement, with bright fruit and a much longer finish. Still, I plan to hold on to my other bottle for at least another year. (3825 views)
Tasted by Beachrooster on 5/16/2010 & rated 92 points: Purple and garnet. Aromas of very ripe cherries, plum, saddle wood, and perfume. Good balance and with fresh acid. Nice weight. Definitely a California wine with loads of fruit and ripe tannins. The acid and ripe tannins ride hand and hand together for a lovely finish. (4029 views)
Tasted by randyjc on 4/30/2010 & rated 89 points: This wine has a beautiful nose but, so far, does not live up to the promise of that nose. It seems kind of out-of-balance and with a weird sweetness to it. Not a nice Grenache-like sweetness, just something off-putting. I still have hope - but I counsel patience. I'm going to try to leave my remaining bottles until 2012 to 2014 before drinking again. Maybe it will all come together. (4276 views)
Tasted by JCarella on 2/27/2010 & rated 90 points: Very enjoyable wine, smooth flavor, great with meat or alone (4363 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 1/3/2010 & rated 89 points: Nice balance and deep, forward blackberries and blueberries on the palate. My only concern with this wine was a somewhat short finish. If I had more bottles, I'd give them until at least the middle of '10. (4200 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 11/10/2009 & rated 91 points: 14.7% ABV. Per the label, the Avenger is 75% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache. Popped and poured. Dark black garnet, mostly opaque in the glass. Aromatic nose of smoke, cedar/balsa wood, and green pepper. On the palate this shows sweet black fruit on the attack with nuances of cocoa and graphite. Medium-full bodied with good concentration. I found myself having some difficulty finding exactly the right flavors to describe this wine, and what I ended up with are pretty atypical for the grape blend, but I enjoyed the wine. (4255 views)

2007 Villa Creek Avenger

2007 AVENGER
75% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache
Elevage: 100% de-stemmed fruit from Booker Vineyard, basket pressed and racked once off gross lees. Aged 18 months in 50% new French Barriques.
Color: Ron Burgundy
Aromatics: An incredibly sexy offering with upfront notes of cocoa, blueberries, black licorice and violets.
Palate: The mouth fills out with more chocolate, cherry cola and just a hint of black pepper and tar. The finish is both velvety and lush, keeping you coming back for more.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
