Tasted by RojoVino24 on 1/15/2024 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 2 hours from magnum. Color and nose showed amazing age. Never would of thought this was over 20 yrs. Fresh chocolate and cassis. Paired amazing with homemade pasta and meatballs. This is in a great spot right now. Moderate complexity but great balance. (232 views)
Tasted by G SQUARED on 3/26/2023 & rated 91 points: Still alive with enough acidity to last another decade. However, I doubt it’s going to improve so drink up. (449 views)
Tasted by Michael Moore on 2/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Still drinking beautifully. Tannins still present, but well integrated. (1030 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 12/8/2021 & rated 94 points: blind
Again a very good Cali Cab from 2001. Still fresh and lots of clack currant and dark chocolate. At his top. Makes fun. Never heard about the winery. 94 (1653 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 2/18/2021 & rated 92 points: 2nd of several bottles w neighbors by candlelight during TX Snovidgeddon. Notes are after the fact but when I first opened this it was soft and seemed past its peak, but it added weight 45 minutes later.

Still shows its dark fruit pedigree beneath a deep coat of maturity and elegance. You’d guesss this as new world, but it’s punching well-above its price.

If I had any more of these (and I don’t) I would consume in the next 1-2 years simply because there’s more risk waiting than enjoying it today.

WOTN was a 13 Foley Mountain Merlot, 90 mins in the decanter.

Note:this bottle endured 3 relocations, each halfway across the country. (1481 views)
Tasted by gsquireh on 5/8/2020: TO Adam (1647 views)
Tasted by ocwineo on 10/23/2017 & rated 93 points: Big wine that delivers big blackberries tar and tabacco followed by a long finish. Still has lots of years left before maturity-outstanding cab (2582 views)
Tasted by D.Callahan on 5/14/2016 & rated 94 points: Excellent nose and beautiful fruit on the front palate followed by a wash of balancing acidity that handled a juicy prime steak with ease. The finish was of medium length which dropped the wine score a bit but overall an excellent wine. This bottle had, contrary to other raters impressions, plenty of acidity. Bottle variation? (3432 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 7/29/2015: Toronto Cru Monthly Tasting - July 2015 (Jay's Place - Toronto, On): Phew! This was a monster! It's still fully primary with just a boat load of fruit in the typical Napa idiom. Not necessarily overripe, but just masses of concentrated fruit. The nose is of lavender, purple candy, blueberry compote and macerated blackberry. The palate replays the sweet fruit with low perceived tannin and low acid. Not rated as I just can't do wines of this style justice. (4617 views)
Tasted by drunken sommelier on 5/12/2015: Tasted last night and did not take notes. Lots of ripe fruit and structure left. Tannins are still quite present and while not chewy they do leave a drying sensation on the palate. This wine has at least another 5 years left before it thinks about declining at all, possibly longer. (4031 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 7/28/2014 & rated 92 points: No decant. (4347 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 9/26/2013 & rated 91 points: This is quite a thick juice... Very ripe and marmelady nose. Dark berries. It has a nice balance, nicley integrated tannins but on the other side it is quite a massive wine. This is a superbly made wine but for my personal taste almost over the top. (3927 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 2/10/2012 & rated 92 points: 14.8% alcohol. decanted, and followed in the glass for 3.5 hours. air definitely helped this wine, so recommended to decant. interesting, well made cab that demonstrates nice balance, even if the general components reveal a strong willed example of the grape. blue fruit + black licorice. this is not a finely nuanced wine that will develop with overt aging. i believe it is where it should be in a performance window. no hurry to drink, but why wait? drink now-2014. (4611 views)
Tasted by RussK on 1/7/2012 & rated 89 points: RUSSK At Peter's Hlwd Wine Society 2001 CA Cab Tasting, most of them were still a bit young. Too hot (3637 views)
Tasted by thalf on 12/24/2011 & rated 94 points: Loved it. Huge and jammy! (3970 views)
Tasted by paffy on 10/29/2011 & rated 98 points: This is a true classic cali cab.
One of the best Foley efforts I've ever had.
Top 3 cab ever

Opened in my cellar for 1.5 hours before heding toAngelini Osteria in Hlwyd.
WOW!!!! Opaque colored Cabernet
Wonderfully sweet aromas of melted licorice intermixed with cedar wood, black currant liqueur, chocolate, and spice.
Wow!! (3422 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 10/5/2011 & rated 93 points: Beautiful nose of black licorice and forest floor; Great depth, strength (2640 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 3/15/2011 & rated 95 points: Decanted 1 hour. Lots of elegant black fruit and chocolate flavors. Long finish. Wonderful nose. (3010 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 9/7/2010 & rated 97 points: Bought upon release and stored properly. Decanted for 2 hours before tannins began to give. Loved the nose and feel in the mouth. Anise, cherry, rich, and lingering for 30-45 seconds. Set aside for another 90 minutes and it completed opened up to a wonderful lip smacking yummy experience. Am so glad I have several bottles remaining as this vintage year is truly superb. The wine has improved in the past 2 years and I expect it to have a very long life still. (3494 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 6/23/2010 & rated 90 points: I really liked this as a red wine but it really lacked much flavor of Cabernet. If it was drier, I'd give it a higher score. There seemed to be come RS (3145 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 9/25/2009 & rated 94 points: Needed an hour in the decanter to open up. Great blue aromas, dark fruit, tobacco, light oak. Lush mouthfeel. This wine was tight upon opening, and really opened up over a 4.5 hour window into a nicely balanced - but still fruit-dominated - wine. Clearly california, and very enjoyable. (3428 views)
Tasted by zimmy07 on 4/12/2009 & rated 93 points: Not as enjoyable as the first bottle I have had of this wine, but it was still great. This was a cellar raid wine at midnight after a long night of drinking somewhere else. Still my top three favorite cali cab produces and this wine was impeccably balanced with lush dark fruits, chocolate and toasty oak. Very good stuff (3693 views)
Tasted by psmith on 4/3/2009: Dark, lush, youthful fruits and chocolate with oak-influenced vanilla and spice notes. Weighty, dense mouthfeel. Full-bodied with abundant, medium-grain tannin. Big wine. I'll echo the Pride Reserve once again. (3559 views)
Tasted by Employee500 on 8/3/2008 & rated 92 points: Whatever....chocolate, coffee bean, rich, toasty and "huge". Just not very nuanced, interesting or terribly drinkable in quantity. (3599 views)
Tasted by zimmy07 on 7/4/2008 & rated 96 points: ultra ripe and rich wine. Dark berries, milk chocolate, great vanilla, and toasty oak. Just spot on. Had incredible structure, layer after layer of different flavors exploding on the palate. The core of this wine, highlighted by the oak, was dense and pure, but drank outstanding now. No decanting on this wine. Perfectly integrated. (3849 views)

Switchback Ridge

Producer website

Switchback Ridge Wines are sourced exclusively from the Peterson Family Vineyard in Calistoga. The property has been in the Peterson family since 1914 and encompasses nearly 100 acres located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. For over 75 years the property was primarily maintained as a farm and plum orchard, with vines intermingled amongst the trees. In 1990, the orchards were replanted to vineyard, where there are currently 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines, in addition to a three acre 50+ year old Petite Sirah block that John Peterson helped plant as a child.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
