Tasted by etyc on 3/13/2024: Nice... but with a touch of bitterness at tail-end... (157 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 3/9/2024 & rated 93 points: Hawker night at Caroline's: Brought for a friend. Similar to my impressions four years ago but more open for business. Sweet red cherry fruit without any game that led some to guess CDP which was fair. Lovely restraint and silkiness on the palate. (266 views)
Tasted by astroman on 3/9/2024 & rated 92 points: Hawker Food Night: Blind, good fruits, touch lavender, with bitter finish on the palate (189 views)
Tasted by jhw425 on 10/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Reall good juice. Silky tan is but not tasting mature or overly evolved by any means. I would drink now but can’t hurt to wait! (219 views)
Tasted by jhw425 on 2/3/2022: This bottle needed a lot of time to come around. Has the depth and sould but took several hours to show the fruit that was lurking in the background (514 views)
Tasted by Axone on 11/14/2021 & rated 90 points: Bon vin mais un peu austère.
Il s'améliore à l'aération. Ne pas hésiter à le carafer. (477 views)
Tasted by jhw425 on 3/30/2021 & rated 91 points: Similar to last note but this bottle may have been a little younger (735 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 9/10/2020: Aged in large barrels, primarily from the Chaillots plot that Guillaume Gilles has taken over (Vincent Paris took over his Geynale plot, which I tasted a few weeks ago). Unmistakably old world on the nose but I wouldn’t have called this a Cornas blind. Silkier than expected with barely any savoury notes. Still needs a lot of air and the fruit of red cherries only came out after 4-5 hours of air. (1161 views)
Tasted by jhw425 on 3/8/2020 & rated 92 points: Drinking great.

Opened with Lamb and this was singing after a few hours! Pretty classic with olives / bacon fat but had more sensibility (less rusric) than some other bottles.

Tannins have subsided and frankly this was way better than a 2006 La Geynale opened a few weeks back. I wonder if that wine needs more time?

Overall a really good bottle from the last vintage of a legend (778 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 3/31/2019: DBYOB The revenge of the final Titan (Farsta): tasted double blind.

Simple in style, a little discombobulated, but good Syrah fruit, a nice smokiness. Recommended. (1179 views)
Tasted by The-E-Man on 3/9/2019 & rated 90 points: Final vintage before Michel’s retirement. Resolutely traditional and all the better for it. Black pepper and violets, blood/iron, classic Syrah packet ham on the nose. Needs so much air even now: the bitterness on the finish (whole stems?) is much more harmonious after a long decant. Obdurate and ornery straight from the bottle, this mellows delightfully given time. Given the prices of Cornas these days, this is a steal! Lovely: but give it lots of air! (647 views)
Tasted by kdubler on 10/21/2016: It's been a while since we drank this (2-3 months ago) but it was beautiful, full of black pepper on the nose and smoked meat. Everything I want from a Syrah and none of the candied fruit you can see in riper ones... (1781 views)
Tasted by m4rc on 7/22/2016 & rated 90 points: Très frais et grande finesse. Un peu lacté à l'ouverture puis s'ouvre sur le graphite, la cerise. Merci Nicolas ! (1740 views)
Tasted by karl.1480 on 1/16/2016 & rated 91 points: Clear, medium intensity, ruby color.

Clean, developing nose with a medium(+) intensity. Savory and rustic nose. Blackberry, juniper, fresh grounded black pepper, meat juice, tobacco, dry soil, decaying leaf and forest floor.

Medium(+) body, medium(+), smooth tannin and medium acidity. A bit rugged mouthfeel and again lots of earthy and meaty notes going on. Medium(+) intensity and a medium(+) finish.

School book northern Rhône Syrah. It really shows that rustic qualities that you expect from great Cornas. A bit developed today but still has potential for further aging. (1881 views)
Tasted by jeffreylubowski on 1/7/2014 & rated 91 points: Decanted for an hour. Had with goat stew. Lovely northern rhone. Mid weight. Tannins not too powerful. Black pepper n violets. Last vintage with this winemaker. (3401 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/11/2012: Lighter red, tawny edge. A bit of funk. Light to mid-weight. Dry fruit, weedy. OK. (3754 views)
Tasted by TheBusiness724 on 1/11/2011 & rated 91 points: This is a young and fairly tannic, but also well-balanced and classic Cornas. At first you get the dark fruits and savory olive notes you would expect, with a bit of earthy rusticity, but with air this wines gains in complexity and eventually I found layers of cherry flavors and aromas woven into the more traditional elements, creating a smoother and more accessible experience. I would recommend this as a relative bargain for those looking for quality Northern Rhone syrahs without shattering the bank. (2847 views)
Tasted by blancdeblancs on 2/1/2010: thought to be the last vintage of this particular bottling from R. Michel! the classic qualities of Cornas---black pepper, raspberry, cedar. old school, not too concentrated. some wet slate notes. young, with texture to spare. (2516 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
