Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Chateaunewf on 12/26/2022 & rated 90 points: Nice correct Chablis with pear and citrus a minerality. Perfect for adding to and complementing cheese fondue using Christmas leftovers. Light bodied with good tension. Straight forward without too much complexity. I would expect stainless steel tank fermentation as there is no sign of oak. Hard to beat for the price under $30. (415 views)
Tasted by Grenik on 4/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Still drinking well, but no need to hold any longer. Tepid nose on the PnP but a solid flavor profile. Good fruit, peach blossom, low acidity so it presented a little fat in the mid-palate. Enough structure to hold a moderate finish. Delicate but interesting. (1216 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 4/3/2019: No details. Decent, but not as good as the '09 (1241 views)
Tasted by edge on 12/29/2018 & rated 85 points: Nice citrus notes, a bit thin. Drink up. (1272 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 12/21/2018 & rated 85 points: I like this, but it's time to drink up any remaining. Nose initially was covered by wet paper & gasoline tones, giving away its age. This blew off to show some wet rock, apple sauce, and bruised pear notes. It's more lively on the palate, showing mineral tones along with soft white fruits. Touch of curd in the midpalate is interesting, leading to a medium finish with just-ample acid. (1328 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 3/30/2018 & rated 87 points: fading fast. Lost any real charm, in my view but still decent drinking (1451 views)
Tasted by Magnolian on 2/10/2018 & rated 90 points: Heavy citrus, less heavy minerals. Not as much acidity as I expected, but still outstanding with swordfish and arugula. Maybe a hair past it’s prime. (1036 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 12/16/2017 & rated 89 points: Nice yellow color, completely clear, the nose is reluctant, and mostly mineral, maybe a touch of apple, and reflects some aging. Sharp and fairly acidic, but still relatively balanced, it has some mineralogy, but not as much as expected. The finish is mild, but reasonable length. Good, but not awesome. $40. (1124 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 12/3/2017 & rated 89 points: Light gold color. Fresh mineral and citrus aromas. Lemon, salt, and mineral flavors with nice acidity. Medium body, with lengthy dry finish. (960 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 9/27/2017 & rated 90 points: A refreshign change from California whites. I got more grapefruit from this than other tasters. I think it may have some residual yeast still working on the wine, as I just pulled the cork on the empty bottle that has just a bit of wine left, and it popped a bit. I didn't get the mineral edge either but it was still very nice and had a decent balance of fruit and acidity. It did develop more intensity and complexity in the glass but never red lined. A decent wine should you want to try. Ready now for my money. (1435 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 8/28/2017: great bottle with no premox and great cut and fruit....very nice (838 views)
Tasted by Poliosis on 5/10/2017 & rated 90 points: glycerin, lemon, flinty.
floral notes are fading but still pleasantly surprised how well this held up. (1238 views)
Tasted by sawira on 4/25/2017 & rated 91 points: Clean, crisp Chablis. Maybe fading a bit. Delicious though, but I'd drink up as this has nowhere to go but down. (1105 views)
Tasted by Dalex on 3/21/2017 & rated 89 points: past it's prime but still drinking well. surprisingly there is a decent amount of fruit left but very minimal mineral content. I expected more, but this is still lovely but more reminicent of something from the cote d'or. (1151 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 5/26/2016 & rated 90 points: Delicious. Drinking well. Will hold for awhile if stored properly. This seems a bit more full and complete vs the regular Fourchaume I had recently. (1697 views)
Tasted by AccaDacca on 5/20/2016 & rated 87 points: Seems to have lost a little edge from my last experience. Pleasant wine, but either shut down or fading. (1725 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 5/17/2016 & rated 90 points: Lemon, salt, and mineral aromas. Consistent flavors with nice acidity. Medium body, with lengthy dry finish. Still holding up. (1452 views)
Tasted by sawira on 5/2/2016 & rated 91 points: What a superb wine, and at a perfect peak. Nearing grand cru quality. All the classic chablis characteristics are there - bright laser focused lemony fruit, tons of seashore and brine, excellent glycerine laden body (but not too much, this certainly isn't heavy), and the wispy filagree of complex nuances from just enough age. First from this producer, won't be the last. (1541 views)
Tasted by dmalcolm on 7/10/2015 & rated 88 points: Very bright nose that is all lemony citrus and salt. Great acidity with more citrus, some saline and honeyed on the palate. Light to med body, fresh and young, with a long, dry finish. (2016 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 4/15/2015 & rated 89 points: Consistent notes from a year ago. Lengthy finish. (1545 views)
Tasted by btock on 11/7/2014 & rated 90 points: Very focused, bright acidity, tensile. A good showing, and good QPR. Have enjoyed this producer's basic Chablis, but this was a nice step up. A bit of air in the glass helped, was expecting this to be a bit more mature so a pleasant surprise how young it drank. A food wine. Had a touch of lemon and quite dry. Good minerality as it opened up. (1799 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/7/2014 & rated 91 points: CDP and Spain, Plus Whites (Rincon 38, Mpls, MN): Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was pretty tightly wound and a bit stark up front, saline, minerals and not much else. The palate had stark minerality, lemon. This began to blow up from where it was at after about 15-20 minutes and developed a lemon, lemon parfait nose with lots of white flowers. The palate showed some good focus with lemon, citrus zest, to balance the minerality and left you with a medium finish with a hint of peach. Nice transformation. (2323 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 6/13/2014 & rated 89 points: Aromas of lemon and chalk. Consistent flavors with green apple. Good acidity and minerality and very nice with food. (2094 views)
Tasted by ron m on 4/7/2014: Decent, correct, simple Chablis. Straw colored; floral nose; on the palate - lemons, granny smith apples, chalk; good finish laden with minerals. (1919 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 3/1/2014: nose - floral
mouth - crisp, very clean, nice minerality, almost more floral than fruit. showing very nicely (1944 views)

(VIEILLES VIGNES Fourchaume VRIGNAUD) Vrignaud Dear Friends, We’ve had a large number of inquiries over the weekend about Vrignaud Chablis from 2008 - all were very well-received by Burghound in the new issue (out a few days ago) and it appears many of you were waiting for this set of reviews to take the plunge. The good news is that the 2008 Fourchaume and Fourchaume Vieilles Vignes scored at the top of their range and the winery has agreed to hold a small amount of cellar stock for us to offer today (the previous parcels are already on their way to us). I will stress again – the 2008 Vieilles Vignes is what white Burgundy strives so hard to become but so rarely is – a tensile reflection of site-place and vintage (from a prized parcel of old-vines) that does not seek to exclude the consumer due to pricing, rather the opposite. At , I don’t think you will find many arguments that this wine holds a place among the most enticing (and rarest) bargains in all of Chablis (and of Burgundy proper for that matter). It is interesting to note that Burghound actually increased his drinking window (from 2012+ to 2014+) and he removed any language about wood use as there is none: (also listed as “Outstanding” on the web site) If you have any interest in this wine, please let us know at your earliest convenience. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a top-tier “value” in a world of expensive white Burgundy: 2008 Domaine Vrignaud Chablis "Fourchaume Vieilles Vignes" 1er - (as noted below in the original offer, compare at $45-48+) Please give us your maximum number up to 24/person and we will allocate accordingly To order: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to depart directly from the winery cellar – it will arrive in late November (please check OARS for local pick up after Dec 1st). It will ship during the Spring shipping season. - Jon Rimmerman Click here to view the status of your orders in O.A.R.S. *********************** (Original offer from a week ago) Vieilles Vignes 1er Dear Friends, Here’s another gift from Domaine Vrignaud – a fantastic deal on old-vine Chablis that puts into perspective how out of whack world-wide Chardonnay prices have become. Pick you favorite region but, if Vrignaud can offer this top-end limited production example for less than (from their very best/oldest plot of 1er) it makes you question the semblance of reason that encourages market activity at 3-4 times the price? I understand that terra firma in the Cote d’Or and elsewhere is expensive and often miniscule (with requisite supply/demand ratios) but I’ll take this slice of terroir any day of the week for . VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – VERY HARD TO FIND ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance: 2008 Domaine Vrignaud Chablis "Fourchaume Vieilles Vignes" 1er – SOLD OUT (this wine is typically priced between a Chablis 1er and a grand cru, it is not the regular Fourchaume 1er; compare at $45-48+, the regular Fourchaume 1er is usually around $35)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
