Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 62 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SeattlePaul on 6/9/2018: Okay, when first opened it didn't have much going for it, but as it warms up, there's more there. However there's a big tannin structure that gets in the way and isn't balanced by the fruit and acid. And there's a hit of alcohol on the end. Not loving it. (1964 views)
Tasted by FYS on 12/31/2017 & rated 88 points: Has matured quite a bit from 2012 which was the last year I tried this. Textbook Nebbiolo - opens with earth, mushroom and minerals with bright acidity, high tannins and tart cherry on the palette. Nose is very similar to an aged Pinot. Tight on opening - needed about an hour of air before she opened up a bit. Suggest pairing with heartier red meat. (1986 views)
Tasted by Njalla on 9/15/2017 & rated 89 points: Would definitely have lasted a few more years. Very tart, high acidity. Good wine! (2133 views)
Tasted by pswe on 3/26/2017 & rated 90 points: Drinks very well right now. Probably at its prime, I doubt further ageing will add much,
I'm glad I saved the last bottle a bit longer, has clearly matured from last time. (2403 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 12/30/2016: PnP - a little tightly wound on initial pour so I let this sit in the glass for an hour before revisiting - improved with air. Dark fruits, spine of acidity with a lot of dusty tannins that linger on the tongue long after the wine has left your mouth. I think this has probably benefiting from the age and has added some complexity - not earth shattering but quite good. (2590 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 11/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Full bodied and rich. Easy to enjoy. Tremendous mouth feel with solid tannins. Good acid express themselves on a solid, medium-plus finish. No shortage of fruit or signs that this needs to be drunk anytime soon. Recommend decanting.

Tasted by Rezy13 on 1/20/2015: Tuesday Night Double Blind <$30 (Bin 75): Chocolate core with brownish crimson edge and orange rim; some soy, brown backing spice, sour cherry and strawberry, fennel, seems like Sangiovese on nose; fuller palate, good nobility, ripe and raisiny; ok. (3012 views)
Tasted by Bro on 12/29/2014 & rated 89 points: Robe de couleur rouge brique fonce ... Nez sur les fruits confits et le tabac ... Papilles sur les fruits rouges bien murs ... Longue finale ... Produit à renouveler a la première occasion ... (2593 views)
Tasted by pswe on 12/21/2014 & rated 88 points: Well matured now in colour and bouquet. Taste is still surpisingly fruity. Gives a rather well balanced impression with a long and attractive taste. Seems as if it opened up during the evening so will air it even longer next time. Can survive still some time in the cellar. (2315 views)
Tasted by gbgpatrik on 4/25/2014 & rated 90 points: Sweet cherry, m+ acid , m tannines (LOT of sediments in Bottle) some tar and obvious oak treatmant but well integrated. Went well with BBQ spare ribs. I hate spell check... (3208 views)
Tasted by Magners on 1/15/2014 & rated 86 points: Unfortunately a little too much of everything in a style that I don't really appreciate anymore; fruit, extraction, alcohol, oak, development. Basically high quality grapes but way too modified for my palate. A glass or two is nice but this wine has little or no Nebbiolo/Piemonte feeling. (2270 views)
Tasted by gbgpatrik on 11/9/2013 & rated 90 points: Best La Spinetta Nebbiolo so tal! Well integrated tannines. The wine is much softer now then a year ago. Some acid present but everything is now in harmony! The oak is also present but rather elegant in the background! (2493 views)
Tasted by Chasse_spleen on 4/26/2013 & rated 90 points: Beautiful wine. Forward nebbiolo-nose, very characteristic. Could be mistaken for a good Barolo. Balanced, and structured - but with charm. (2724 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 9/16/2012 & rated 88 points: Medium red colour, slightly opaque centre and lighter red at the edge. Fruit-dominated and youngish nose with rather concentrated red berries including cherries, some dried red berries or berry liqueur, noticeable floweriness, some oak and hints of vanilla and liquorice. More than medium bodied, good concentration of red berries, partly dried berries and with a hint of bitterness that hints at cranberries, slightly alcoholic in the attack, good acidity, medium(+) tannins with some dryness but that are reasonably well integrated into the fruit, and a clean fruity-tannic aftertaste. Drinks rather well now if you're not too avert to tannin, but is likely to improve somewhat with further cellaring, so I'd say 88+.

This is definitely a modernistic interpretation of Nebbiolo with clear varietal character, and while the oak is clearly in evidence it is well handled within its style and rather supports the aromaticity and floweriness than make it come across as chocolate-y. My only reservation is that I find the alcohol just a small bit too evident. (3594 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 6/28/2012 & rated 92 points: Extremely enjoyable, almost at peak. Medium-dark ruby-garnet. Attractive nose with lovely nebbiolo character, displaying red cherry, violets and earthyness. Medium-bodied with massive but fine tannins, bright fruit and high acidity. Long aftertaste. Very versatile to pair with food. Great value. Modern and forward in style. (3287 views)
Tasted by bboy on 5/11/2012 & rated 90 points: Wow, why don't I drink more Nebbiolo?
I like wine with this outspoken acidity, bring me more Jerome. (3355 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 4/30/2012: Similar notes as last time though I thought this bottle showed a little more Nebbiolo character. Lots of fine tannins this time to go with the red fruits, faint licorice chocolate and rose notes. Enjoyed this bottle more than the last. (3011 views)
Tasted by Vpmacedo on 3/31/2012 & rated 91 points: Well balanced. Very dark in color and on the nose i could identify plums and other darker fruits. Obviously not as intense as barolo or barbaresco, but still a very nice nebbiolo. (2802 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 9/2/2011: I drank this during a fantasy football draft and it wasn't quite what I was expecting. Riper and more modern in style, dark cherry fruits, easy drinking, very faint licorice and a touch of chocolate/cocoa. Most of my limited Nebbiolo experience is with Barolo and this wasn't in that league (not that I expected it to be either). I wouldn't have been able to identify it as Nebbiolo if served blind. Still a pleasant, easy drinking pizza wine. (3219 views)
Tasted by peblin on 8/26/2011 & rated 89 points: Tamarind, strawberries, lingonberries. With air, more smoke, tar and licorice. High acidity and medium, ripe tannins. Lost a lot of fruit after a couple of hours in the decanter. (3064 views)
Tasted by Oskiwawa on 5/20/2011 & rated 88 points: All in all for the price this is a decent wine. Vanilla and cherry on the nose. Dry tannins with nice acidity to back up dark cherry dominated palate. While it is by no means a special occasion wine it is a really good pizza wine. Should hold well for the next 3-5 years. (3750 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 4/10/2011 & rated 90 points: Aromas of cherry and mineral with an underlying earthiness. Balanced, with cherry and red fruit flavors on the palate. Nice finish; tannins perhaps a touch austere. (3600 views)
Tasted by bowmanbc on 3/28/2011 & rated 88 points: got at a restaurant in St. Louis and was fairly satisfied with it. has that smokey berry aroma, big round flavour when swishing, then a very dry finish. (2471 views)
Tasted by BYOB on 3/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Dark, ripe cherry notes, light tannins and a hint of chocolate. Nice... (3977 views)
Tasted by ovenmitt on 2/6/2011 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured through venturi - Not a lot on the nose, a bit of licorice, cherries, and funk. Good medium mouthfeel with cherries and a fine chocolate/cocoa powder/truffle thing going on a hint of oak in there too. Not super structured, but enough tannin to give good balance..... Overall a very enjoyable well made wine, but not overly complex or expressive. I liked this a bit better than the Malvira Nebbiolo. (4195 views)

La Spinetta (Rivetti)

Producer website
Producer Location - Castagnole Lanze (Google Maps)

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)
Founded in 1977 by Giuseppe (“Pin”) and Lidia Rivetti, La Spinetta was first known for their production of excellent Moscato d’Asti wines. After several years they introduced red varieties Barbera and Nebbiolo to the production, the beginning of what was to become a great adventure. In just over thirty years, through the acquisition of carefully selected vineyards and dedication to excellence, La Spinetta has reached the apex of quality and recognition around the world, producing a wide range of wines from their three different estates: the original La Spinetta cellar in Castagnole delle Lanze, Campé in Grinzane Cavour, and Casanova in Tuscany.

The philosophy behind La Spinetta’s wines stems from distinction in the vineyards and the dedication to indigenous grape varieties; the Rivetti family is continuously striving to produce the purest expression of territory whether in Piedmont or Tuscany. Great care is taken in the vineyards throughout the growing cycle, carrying out multiple green harvests, utilizing only natural fertilizers and keeping the use of machinery to a minimum as well (horses are used as much as possible, also useful for their nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous-rich “fertilizer”). In the cellar, technology and innovation meet years of experience and passion to create wines that reflect the vineyards and the soil, not the hand of the winemaker.

The newest addition to the La Spinetta ensemble is the historic 1867 Contratto winery in Canelli, Italy’s first producer of traditional method (metodo classico) sparkling wines. Officially acquiring the property in 2011, Giorgio Rivetti is devoted to re-launching this classic Italian brand, producing top quality Italian Spumanti alongside La Spinetta’s other already well-loved and celebrated wines.

“A great winemaker has to have the mentality of a farmer. That’s the only way to truly understand the wines. So, please don’t call me a winemaker, call me a farmer.” – Giorgio Rivetti

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
