They play against one another so perfectly. As a drink it is so intense it might overwhelm. I am used to these so the intensity doesn't usually get to me, but this one was really almost too much so I found it more enjoyable in small amounts to savor which is how a 375 lasts a week. The flavors are maple, pecans, figs & dates and a citrus note to cut it just a bit. However, the finish seems eternal so the small tastes are worth it. A very, very dark brown colour with a yellow rim; bouquet, violets, syrup, from deep down comes some citrus, currents, ripe bitters and all together super, super concentrated. The aftertaste is endless. There are maybe some similarities with PX sherry, but this Vin Santo has a character of its own. Unique, I think. Superb with Dutch cheeses. Heartwarming and humbling, this is a wine for contemplation. A painter's palette showing radiant and psychedelic nuances of gold, orange, brown and... olive green! It made me think of the tiling of a seventies bathroom, for sure. Also the viscosity of this wine was something I haven't seen very often. Nose is extremely elegant, yet complex and impressive: roasted pecans, Turkish Delight, lavender honey, preserved lemon peel, dried apricots and a delicately spicy Asian seasoning. In the mouth thick and viscous like olive oil, followed by a kaleidoscopic array of nuts and dried fruit. Fortunately, this wine also has freshness, acidity and grip in spades. Lemon-oil, balsamic vinegar, marmelade and stone-like minerality give this elixir depth and plenty of vivaciousness. Needless to say that the finish is unbelievably well detailed and persistent. Dark brown color with burnt sugar, coffee, and a faint sauvage note on the nose. Lots of fig and toffee on the palate, with a reappearance of coffee and something wild on the finish. Truly a unique experience for me. The best way I could describe it would be to take an Aussie Rare Muscat, decrease the alcoholic burn, and trade in the maple syrup/caramel for a background briary note. My only bottle; it was great to share it with wonderful people who enjoyed it so much. What an amazing stuff.. tasted some other vintages before but this is by far the best so far.
Caramel color, very brown. the 1987 I tasted was much lighter. but the taste...
You are blown out of your socks with an incredible caramel, toffee, dried fruits, roasted walnut, roasted almond, the sweetness and, and,, well... just by everything.
This is a wine that brings tears to my eyes. how on erth can thsi be made by only using grapes???
What a thickness, what a structure... we were with six people, we all had a bit of it. a good amount and there is still left in the bottle. you just cannot handle 2 glasses of this... and the finish??? well it just has no finish.. it keeps on going.. I tasted it still when I went to bed......
I scored it 99. but now that I am typing this and thinking of that amazing taste I wonder why not 100??? well... maybe... but who cares.. this is a liftime memory.. the best wine I tasted so far.. EVER. (3401 views) |
