Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 42 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/24/2024 flawed bottle: An off bottle, muted and seemingly stripped of fruit, just lackluster with a tinny note on the front of the tongue. (457 views)
Tasted by vvWine.ch on 3/1/2024 & rated 91 points: Gereiftes Rubin, deutlich Trübstoff. Gereifte Nase, etwas Waldboden, reife, rote Frucht, warm anmutend. Im Gaumen mit deutlicher Reife, die Säure ist zupackend, sehr markant, knackig, rotfruchtig, jedoch nicht so lang anhaltend wie in grossen Jahren. Trinken. (349 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/26/2023 & rated 92 points: Planning Session III (Chloe by Vincent, Mpls): Murky medium dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Tart cherry, cranberry, murky, tobacco leaf, becomes more earthy with air, great Gevrey spice notes emerge, deep, fairly intense with more acidity. I do get a touch of brown sugar on the nose after an hour or so. 92+pts. (760 views)
Tasted by pclin on 7/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Another good vintage of Fourrier Combe aux Moines, my favorite wine in Fourrier’s lineup. Currently batting #2 in my regular lineup, so happened to be the regular batting order of Shohei Ohtani. (1004 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 7/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Birthday celebration for C/Y: Fourrier is one producer that has such a strong imprint that it’s possible to call blind - said that this was a ‘06 or ‘08 Fourrier Gevrey. A little of the ‘08 screechy acid but with the lifted fruit signature and spice of Fourrier. A little astringent, didn’t have the energy and delineation of the best vintages, but still very enjoyable. (1053 views)
Tasted by astroman on 7/29/2023 & rated 94 points: C & YM Birthday Dinner (Empire Chinese Cuisine): 3 hrs after pouring to Voss bottle. Alluring aroma of potpourri, blueberry, cold fruits, on the palate a little weak after the stunning bouquet. Full dry and coarse tannins with high acid. Give additional points for the beautiful nose but sadly the palate did not match up. Needs a few more years of age. (893 views)
Tasted by NickA on 6/7/2023 & rated 92 points: 2008 red Burgs (Noize): Flamboyant and a bit heady on the nose, with an exotic feel, fresh red fruit and some orange rind and rose... it smelled pretty great. Then more '2008' on the palate, which was sharp and lithe, with the flavour of cough sweets and a slightly tight and astringent side. (815 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 6/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Nick's 2008 Burgundy - Noize (Noizé, London): 1/12. Nose shows pure red fruit - satrwberries, floral notes, touch of spice. Medium bodied, fresh and vibrant, spice, touch of savour, some grip on the good length finish. Excellent, certainly drinking. (809 views)
Tasted by KenK on 1/4/2023 flawed bottle: Excellent aromas of ripe red berry fruits with a good earthy element. On the palate very tart and citric that overwhelms any nuance and clashes hard against the impressive underlying fruit qualities. Based on other notes here wonder if this is just a weird bottle. At best, this still needs time to integrate as unpleasant today. Admittedly, this was popped and poured. Will cork it, fridge it & try again tomorrow. (957 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/20/2022 & rated 93 points: A year since we had this last (Papies 91) and indeed has Improved and on top of that we decided to decant which definitely helped opening up the wine. Still this has a few more years before reaching full capacity.
Very elegant wine, properly well made according to the pedigree, firm but also with a soft feel, red fruited, soft smoky edge light spice. What Proper red Burgundy needs to be . We have one last bottle and this we will wait a few more years before before opening. 93 (974 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 11/25/2022 & rated 92 points: 醒酒半个多小时,淡宝石红色,闻香有木质香气,樱桃草莓一类的红果,奶油味,入口酸度很高,非常线性,酒液很咸,湿石头的矿物感,单宁细腻如粉,口感如浓缩山楂汁一般,中后段还没完全打开,有点闷,余味是红果和奶油味。一款质量很高的很皮诺,风格传统,口感很扎实,酒的结构不小,完全没醒开,没能一睹它的最佳风采,状态全开的话应该会很不错。 (773 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/22/2021 & rated 91 points: Opened and served.
Andreas who had this blind went originally for a fresh 10yr old Syrah from Rhone valley , guessing from our inventory this was the 2007 St Joseph from Chave. Such was the spice in this !
Fresh and felt really cool climate , soft too but quite the fresh and youthful wine . Definitely a good amount of oak albeit not toasty , was used here and the wine albeit good felt a touch one dimensional and lacking complexity for the pedigree. We have 2 more and these we will forget for 5yrs minimum. 91 for now (1707 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 12/15/2021 & rated 88 points: SLDS December 21: Violets, smoke, red berries. Red fruit profile but it ends up a bit tough with an acid hardness taking the focus. Might improve, might not. (955 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 5/18/2021: Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux
Moines 2008
Absolutt drikkbar, men Ikke helt korrekt flaske.
Lite frukt og mye syre. (2059 views)
Tasted by Tavastgatan on 2/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Quitenssential Burgundy (2028 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 2/3/2021 & rated 86 points: High-toned and tart cranberry/cherry. Thin and very high acid. (1964 views)
Tasted by Papies on 1/9/2021 & rated 92 points: A wine we feel rocks between 92-93 and is in a very pretty state and full of elegance and charm at this stage. This time we had it o the back of the 99 Serafin CC ( Papies 95) and thus showed a much younger and bright fruit side . Still very polished and round and really at the start of its drinking window and with a lot of charm to come for those patient enough. 92-93 (2141 views)
Tasted by Jowh on 12/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Do not decant. Sings when pnp'ed. (1382 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Even better than the bottle we had 2 weeks ago ( Papies 92). This is what burgundy dreams are made of if a way, elegant, lovely dark edge to the fruit, soft spice and smoky but above all very elegant and with a persistence on the palate. Very very good and with lots of life ahead , frankly this has just entered its drinking window. 93 (1319 views)
Tasted by Papies on 11/5/2020 & rated 92 points: At the start of its drinking window albeit well within it and these 2008s feel even more approachable than his 2007s. Softer and elegant very much welcoming and subtle.
Soft red fruit with an undertone of Gevrey dark and smoky edge but really now what rules the show is a soft red fruit soft spice and quite a savory wine. Very solid 92 for now but with lots of future here (1371 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/8/2020 & rated 93 points: Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combes aux Moines Tasting (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): In 14/13/08/01/96 vertical. So much black cherry with savory spice, roasted meat, finishing with black pepper and allspice. Very good weight and balance. Much better, accessible vs another bottle from earlier this year. Very good now, with upside. (1960 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 10/8/2020 & rated 93 points: 96/01/08/13/14 Vertical. Star of the showing and a bottle that is in peak form. Fully, intense nose of red and black cherry with a prominent Gevrey meaty spice throughout. Refined, lacy cherry fruit that is perhaps a bit more Chambolle in texture. Long, flavorful finish. (1272 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/2/2020 & rated 90 points: Good Wine with an Exciting Super Bowl (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): In 08/09/10 vertical. Small glass, brief note. Least forthcoming, most backward of the trio. Lots of black fruit, some earth, faint spice hints, plenty of tannins that are still firm. (2081 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 3/2/2019 & rated 90 points: Acker 2019/03 (Marea): Good fruit, but nothing interesting. 90 (2265 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 11/23/2018 & rated 91 points: Red fruit, stalky, fresh and clean. Opens up after and hour but didn’t improve after 6 hours. Very enjoyable - but nothing exceptional. (2252 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
