Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by liber on 3/5/2024 & rated 92 points: 11th of 12, opened an hour then splash decanted, perfect level, cork third stained, little changed from last bottle in Aug 22, now quite round and layered, ,tannins mostly resolved, attractive enough but not a stellar vintage for this wine, plateau but no rush. F (17.5). (150 views)
Tasted by Jabulani on 2/25/2024 & rated 90 points: Showing its age, but shakes off the initial funk (which has apparently been a character of this wine since 2004!) to come together into a complex old Tuscan wine, lacking varietal character, but certainly enjoyable. Not a great vintage, not a wine which should have been aged this long, so your mileage may vary, but this bottle was decent. (131 views)
Tasted by gediminasbielskus on 2/25/2024 & rated 86 points: Nice to drink, but one note, lacks definition and medium in its intensity. Nothing about this wine would define it in a blind tasting. Only had one bottle , so not sure if this is typical. (123 views)
Tasted by liber on 8/17/2022 & rated 92 points: 10th of 12, pnp, perfect level, cork half travelled. Rounder and more attractive than last August's bottle, limited upside but no rush. F (17.5). (1122 views)
Tasted by liber on 8/18/2021 & rated 91 points: 9th of 12, opened an hour, perfect cork and level, less fruit and more tannin than Feb bottle and not as round and attractive as last week's 97, edgier, less scope for upside. Just about F in context of vintage (17.5). (1749 views)
Tasted by liber on 2/26/2021 & rated 92 points: 8th of 12, opened 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, upward curve, fragrance developing nicely, tighter and purer, classy stuff and upside yet in what was supposed to be a broad and short-term vintage. F (17.5). (1871 views)
Tasted by liber on 12/29/2020 & rated 91 points: 7th of 12, opened 90 minutes, perfect level, half travelled cork, as last noted and still with upside. F (17.5). (1896 views)
(2136 views)
Tasted by liber on 10/9/2019 & rated 91 points: 6th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, step up on last bottle, younger, energetic nuanced fruit, attractive and precise. F (17.5). (1939 views)
Tasted by liber on 9/3/2018 & rated 88 points: 5th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, brown rimmed, aging fast by ref to far superior bottles last December, nice style though, a slightly rogue bottle? Still VG (16). (1998 views)
Tasted by liber on 12/10/2017 & rated 91 points: First four of 12 bottles, decanted an hour, deep dark red, little development; attractive pronounced bouquet, black fruit driven (cassis and cherries), nice minerality, pure; fullish, long and persistent, clean, complex fruit, entering its drinking window. F (17.5).......tad behind the 99 on same night, but more generous than the 98. (2518 views)
Tasted by bablues on 7/15/2017 & rated 89 points: This reminded me a little of the '03 Sammarco, in that it is fresh and lively, although the '03 was giving much more fruit than the '00. Nose is somewhat muted which is a little disappointing. Palate is light and getting mature red fruit with a very dry finish with a little heat. I don't see this getting much better with time. (2884 views)
Tasted by HappyWineGuy on 11/20/2016: This wine opened with noticeable funk on the nose, almost moldy but blew off into a green olive smell and then went away. Probably needed decanting because it did not reveal much until later into the bottle but possibly it was just not a good wine or left too long. (3139 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 10/10/2015 & rated 88 points: A little disappointing, a little muted on the nose, stewed, with red cherry and red plum notes, palate is better with a rounded, pretty mature profile, juicy with mainly a sangiovese profile. Overall a good wine, but not sure worth the tariff. (3762 views)
Tasted by mattyboy_ on 5/13/2015 & rated 88 points: Very simple, given the reputation of this wine although I really liked the freshness. Just a simple drinking dusty sangiovese at this point. I suppose the vintage has something to do with this. (3913 views)
Tasted by Chasset on 4/20/2015 & rated 92 points: Pas aussi complexe que les Alceo mais quand même très bon (3261 views)
Tasted by S_stas on 1/10/2015 & rated 87 points: Past peak, but this bottle may not have been stored properly. Food helped out, but there wasn't much pulse left. (3015 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 12/23/2012 & rated 93 points: Exceptional wine. Superbly balanced with great length and depth of fruit.
I really enjoyed this. (4422 views)
Tasted by guile on 8/18/2012 & rated 88 points: Been sitting on a few of these I scored at $25 each. This bottle seemed particularly muted as none of the plummy nose revealed itself nor the other dark red fruits I'd come to expect. Muted and flat, a bit disappointing. (4291 views)
Tasted by ljl on 5/19/2012 & rated 80 points: Found it lacking in fruit with a biting finish. (3710 views)
Tasted by bwillia on 4/24/2012 & rated 90 points: Gorgeous wine in a good place. Some dusty tannin remains but they are smooth now. Some earth and mineral and tobacco accompany the cherry fruit. (3892 views)
Tasted by HappyWineGuy on 10/29/2011 & rated 90 points: Nice! (4115 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 11/6/2009 & rated 89 points: Cabernet Smackdown (Steve T's, Vernon Hills IL): nose: rather tight nose with some good tones of red and black currants, dark red cherries, spices, herbs, and bits of berries. Good complexity, but its not giving off anywhere close to what it seems to have right now

taste: rich tannins with a full bodied feel with excellent tones of dark red cherries, spices, herbs, fresh picked berries with a bit of cedar tones. The tones are a bit muted right now under the tannins

overall: This baby needs a good amount more tiime to really show itself. Came off as a baby with a good amount of fat that needs to be chiseled away. Seems to have a lot of promise, but this bottle wasn't wanting to show itself (4048 views)
Tasted by br on 12/26/2007: very plummy with some licorice and wood there, on the nose. medium bodied and surprisingly harsh and abrupt in the mid-palate with drying tannins. medium finish. lacks depth. see if there is an improvement tomorrow. if not, this is badly overpriced. (3607 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 4/12/2007: Winestreet Tastes France and Italy (including 04 Mouton, 03 Chapelle, 05 Girardin, and 02 Lalande): Minimal notes on this one. Good cherry fruit on the nose. This tasted very smooth and silky but had rather straightforward cherry fruit flavors. Decent length on the finish. A very nice wine. (4750 views)

Rockss and Fruit (2/7/2005)
(Castello di Rampolla Sammarco) Immediatly this showed a rotting type of aroma. It kind of wavered. Would be there and then wouldn't. Strange. Still there was lovely spice and mineral along with some bright cherry fruit. The palate I did not care for. It was slightly bitter but still had nice mouthfeel but was not as pure as the previous three. Not up to the usual qualitative level this wine usually gets to.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
