Community Tasting Notes (average 88.2 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bg3034 on 7/18/2017: PnP through Nuance Wine Finer. Dark purple color. Lots of sediment. Plum, blackberry, red currant on the nose. Thinning out at this point. A little smoke. Light tannins. Red fruit. Still enjoyable but starting to fade. 89 pts. Aloha! (994 views)
Tasted by Wicked Panda on 10/8/2014 & rated 88 points: A really nice blend. Drinking well with some good fruit still
(2264 views)
Tasted by klezman on 5/27/2014: On PnP it's nicely tannic, a bit astringent, nicely juicy with a good bit of smoke and fat. Nice fun Ty wine, as expected! Also tons of acid - he went to a nice level for this one.

The fruit kept coming out more and more. This is a nice wine, and I'd have been happy to have more of it. Too bad Ty keeps increasing his prices. < $20 is certainly where this wine belongs. Tasty but not terribly distinctive or complex. (3816 views)
Tasted by Wicked Panda on 9/8/2013 & rated 88 points: Good everyday drinker. nice entry, a little tannic still. nice fruit, and a decent finish, but a little missing in the middle. (3152 views)
Tasted by jfarley3 on 10/28/2012 & rated 89 points: Still holding up well (4370 views)
Tasted by TottenCellars on 2/23/2012: A deep purple syrah based blend, nose is of ripe black fruits, think blackberries with a bit of plum. Palate is slightly tart continuing with blackberries, it is full bodied and finishes nicely with an acidic bite at the end. Recommended at under $20 (4905 views)
Tasted by bg3034 on 8/8/2011 & rated 89 points: PnP through Nuance Wine Finer. Dark purple color. Blackberries, a bit of wood and some spice. Blackberries, with moderate tannins. A little spice and wood, but not overwhelming. A little silk on the palate too. Little tartness sticks out on the finish; otherwise fairly balanced. Enjoyable bottle of wine. 89pts. Aloha! (4530 views)
Tasted by jfarley3 on 5/7/2011 & rated 89 points: Enjoyable once again as this is not a wine to go for all the awards, but it is a great wine to pair with food as it is soft and nuanced enough to compliment many dishes. (4705 views)
Tasted by schuey on 4/8/2011 & rated 85 points: Upon opening, a very nice nose of dark berries.
Differing from my first bottle, this did not have the overwhelming alcohol on the nose or on the first few sips. Unfortunately, it was the total opposite. Very muted, closed flavors on the palete with very few redeeming qualities.
After letting it sit for 45 mins. to an hour, it did upon up somewhat, but not to the degree I experienced with Ty's 2005 Field Blend Red. It could be an off bottle, but there was no funk or anything unsavory about this bottle, it was just very muted.
My hopes are that this is going through an evolution of sorts, that will work itself out in a few months. I will taste again in 6 months to see if that is the case. (4594 views)
Tasted by jereth on 3/5/2011 & rated 90 points: very well balanced wine, asphalt \ rubber scented for us, taste was more berry fruit and chocolate with a little tobacco mixed in. (3774 views)
Tasted by dukefirst on 3/5/2011 & rated 89 points: same group of friends as previous bottle ushered me into finishing this lot off. fruit forward and delicious - almost luscious. (4091 views)
Tasted by dukefirst on 2/26/2011 & rated 90 points: This is really coming together and drinking well right now. Ink blotter color, ripe blackberry/blueberry/plum/cherry flavors, and cedar/bergamot/forest floor notes. Much more integrated than first bottle, was a big hit with a small party. (4307 views)
Tasted by jfarley3 on 2/20/2011 & rated 89 points: Soft velvety texture is the hallmark of this wine. Good structure with fresh vibrant tannins. Notes of chocolate, dark berries, and a hint of oak. Very good. (3994 views)
Tasted by SirWinesALot on 12/24/2010: Strong alcohol on the nose and taste. A good Ty wine as usual, but too young. More time resting will help a great deal. Likely wont open any more until 2012. (4382 views)
Tasted by michaelflynnca on 12/13/2010 & rated 84 points: Nice color and nose. Then major red fruit. Nice, round mouth feel and full tannins. Unfortunately followed by overwhelming heat. After decanting 60+ minutes, the alcohol had subsided - enjoyable, but not very interesting. I plan to open another in 2012. (4263 views)
Tasted by dukefirst on 12/1/2010 & rated 88 points: Strong, up-front fruit here likely carried forth by the syrah. The blend has a mineral aspect on the nose, less earthy tones and more of a freshly quarried rock. Very pleasant blend, likely to acquire more in the near future. (4732 views)
Tasted by schuey on 11/27/2010 & rated 87 points: Very youthful. Strong alcohol at first with bright red fruits. This should continue to develop nicely and should show better in 1-2 years. (4850 views)
Tasted by oog on 10/5/2010 & rated 88 points: Nose: Big nose. Woodsy, forest floor, pine, vanilla, raspberry. Some alcohol as well. Taste: Big. Tartness on the approach transitioning to raspberry and other red fruit. Some vanilla and oak as well. HUGE tannic structure, but frankly, too much alcohol right now. This wine needs considerable time or air. Score is for now, I think it has substantial upside with time. (5013 views)
Tasted by saxwizerd45 on 7/9/2010: The latest iteration of the famous "Field Blend"? Sort of. I think this has the potential to reach Field Blend QPR heights, but it's not there yet. It has the fruit (dark, brooding) the complicating flavors (brown sugar, vanilla, a little bramble?) and the structure (lots of tannin right now). But, they're all a little disjointed. Throw in a little heat from not-quite-integrated alcohol and you get wine drinking just okay right now but one that could rival the 05 Field Blend in a year or two. (5505 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
