Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 134 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by PT insurgent on 11/20/2015: Nice wine, ripe stone fruits, grassy, jasmine, oak tinged.
Probably "technically" a fume blanc, but who cares. (3616 views)
Tasted by Ron&nina on 5/27/2015 & rated 88 points: Nothing really to write about on this one but it was pleasant and not astringent like many of the Sauv Blancs I have drank. (3806 views)
 Tasted by Genghis88 on 12/20/2014 & rated 87 points: Family Christmas Dinner @ Carmichel's

Clean, clear, light bodied
Classic green tomato vine,
Grassy, tart, crisp, medium (-) finish.
Tastes like ones 'backyard garden"

Good QPR.... (4170 views)
Tasted by lhrawls on 6/22/2014 & rated 88 points: Lovely on a warm day. Just a tad more fruit than I prefer (4900 views)
Tasted by dmcella on 11/3/2013 & rated 91 points: Picked ripe; medium-plus alcohol (14.1%); no hint of green; grapefruit, lemon predominate; oak notes (barrel fermented and 80% neutral French oak aged) of vanilla; medium-plus acidity, but not screeching; very good (5598 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 8/5/2013 & rated 88 points: Very refreshing and still drinking well. (3408 views)
Tasted by FlyPig on 6/8/2013 & rated 86 points: Average/slightly above average SB - like all Cakebread bottes for me, the price and hype never match the actual wine quality. There are hundreds of other SB's at half the price that will get you the same quality. (3577 views)
Tasted by flwinos on 12/25/2012: Nice sauvignon blanc from my standpoint. No score as I don't drink much Sauv Blanc, so not sure I am the best to rate one. However, most have a lemon grassiness that is over the top for me. This wine did not, so I would call this more "balanced", tasting less like a typical Sauv Blanc. Take this review for what it's worth - from a non-Sauv Blanc expert. (4005 views)
Tasted by aronaz on 12/24/2012 & rated 89 points: This is a good Sav Blanc. I think I prefer Duckhorn down the street, but its a perfect starter wine for any evening. (3466 views)
Tasted by bambam on 10/1/2012 & rated 86 points: Green fruits, grapefruit, lemons, and the oak is noticable. Like some have said, this is a Sauvignon Blanc trying to be California Chardonnay. Not a good thing. (3355 views)
Tasted by agorman on 8/24/2012 & rated 83 points: Pleasant. Green grass, citrus; light. Donna said it tasted as if it was watered down. Disappointing for Cakebread. (3196 views)
Tasted by Lmhobgood on 7/21/2012 & rated 85 points: Loved this wine a couple years back; was disappointed with this vintage (2640 views)
Tasted by Mallards on 4/22/2012 & rated 79 points: California meet Sauv Blanc - and destroys it. Nothing bright about this wine at all. Kinda dull, oaky, what a Chardonnay drinker would want a Sauv Blanc to recommend. For the price a totally worthless bottle. (3140 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 4/8/2012 & rated 87 points: Greenish golden tinge. Light to medium bodied
Fragrant-Strong tomato vines, some green leaf and light citrus
Tightly wound with a medium finish. Mouth filling (medium bodied), with good acidity-Round
Decent minerality off the back end

Not a huge fan of this varietal but none the less, this plays out as a solid example of work well done by the producer. (3063 views)
Tasted by paulst on 3/30/2012 & rated 87 points: Inconsistent fruit/acidity; rather flt without balance; some lemon vanilla. (3075 views)
Tasted by mguglielmo on 3/1/2012 & rated 86 points: PnP, paired with a Tuscan Salmon dish. I'd had this one in the wine fridge for some time now, so figured it was time to pop it. The nose shows strong notes of grass & citrus, with a touch of honey behind it. Some may love this, but I didn't really find a whole lot to make this standout from other (less expensive Cali Sav Blancs). Lots of tart citrus flavors on the palate, bordering on one-dimensional, though some stone fruit helps prevent that. Fairly light in body, but with a lengthy finish. The wife loved it, I'd rather spend $25 on a great Kiwi Sav Blanc. (3834 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 2/19/2012: Tasha and Dean brought this on the boat in Hallandale. Not bad. Not as grassy nor as herbal as some Sauv Blanc, with an interesting smokey aspect to the palate. Ultimately not especially memorable apart from the boat trip itself. (3426 views)
Tasted by James.michael.watrous on 11/24/2011 & rated 88 points: Similar note. A bit flat. Wished for more fruit and youth. (4530 views)
Tasted by Pcparis8 on 11/2/2011 & rated 86 points: Lots of grass and not much else fell flat (4429 views)
Tasted by timdrex on 11/2/2011 & rated 90 points: Citrus, vanilla, just a touch of oak. (4471 views)
Tasted by gguyatt on 10/16/2011 & rated 88 points: Nothing wrong with this wine but for CAD $39 expected more. A lot of oak on the nose, not particularly fresh or lively as one would expect from a sauv blanc. Loire for half the price much better value. (4737 views)
Tasted by prasm on 10/8/2011 & rated 86 points: Tasted at Brix wine bar. Nose: Lemon citrus, fresh cut grass, and rye. Palate: Light bodied, citrus flavors up front, fades through the mid-palate. Finish: Short, showing light citrus sensations. (4501 views)
Tasted by grizzlymarmot on 9/27/2011 & rated 86 points: The nose has a grassy aroma with a touch of vanilla. The oak takes the edge off of the wine, without imparting any wood flavors. I tasted green apples. There is some minerality, but this is not a wine that will zing the sides of your tongue. Overall, not as much oak flavor as a Graves, but more robust than a Sancerre. (4512 views)
Tasted by Leigh Johnson on 9/17/2011 & rated 88 points: Pale lemon, pronounced Riesling nose, butol, white blossom, hay and citrus fruits. On the palate, sharp acidity and tart lime, all in lovely balance, off dry, sweet without cloying, years of life ahead of it (4605 views)
Tasted by nubejumper on 8/22/2011 & rated 90 points: Good but not excellent for the value (4809 views)

Cakebread Cellars

Producer website
Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born. As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

Sauvignon Blanc

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
