Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by aagrawal on 4/5/2023 & rated 90 points: Stood up and decanted off a medium amount of fine sediment in the last 2oz. Medium-deep ruby with age-appropriate bricking; aromatic, spice, bacon fat, smoke, darker fruits; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus vibrant acidity throughout, medium alcohol (12.5-13%?), medium-plus tannins which are still present and a bit youthful, still a good amount of fruit though perhaps lacking a bit in concentration; finish is medium length. This is a nice Northern Rhone and Levet especially for the vintage, enjoyable now but also would easily last and improve for another few years. Nose still better than the palate though the palate is pretty balanced and good too. 90-91
A few hours air: The nose definitely integrates a bit of its wildness, and palate shows a refreshing acidity and vibrancy. Enjoyable food wine for sure. Drinking my last bottle relatively soon would not be a waste.
4+ hours in bottle: The nose is losing a bit of character, and the palate has not fleshed out any. A good wine, but not a great one, and I think I will actually drink my last bottle relatively soon. (1074 views)
Tasted by JimSlatin on 9/30/2022 & rated 91 points: nice Northern Rhone; was tight initially; after an hour or so it showed a good amount of pepper, gamey, savoriness. We wish we had decanted it longer (1295 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 1/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Fascinating and super detailed nose that spans scorched earth, smoked meats, leathers, pepper, brown sugar, and maple, but moreover this is animalistic and wild. Horsehair and fur. Very unique and haven't smelled anything like it. My first Levet. Both sweet and savoury and with a little green stemminess above it. Lavender. Barbecue. Endless aromatics. Pretty wild, probably not for everyone. 93 - 94. (2069 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 12/13/2019 & rated 93 points: Lovely gamey Northern Rhône nose of dark fruit, olives, brine, and herbs. Somewhat light palate with flavors of dark berries, dark cherries, black olives, and medium tannins. Nice finish. Very good wine and not just for the vintage. (1841 views)
Tasted by jmw17 on 4/28/2019: Thin and uninteresting throughout the first night. I left it open on the counter and it filled out to become subtle, savory and quite good for night 2. Long decant recommended or wait 3-6 years. This is a light vintage and very low key for Levet but it is showing promise (2003 views)
Tasted by lbarnard on 12/30/2018 & rated 90 points: A good nose is let down by the palate. Wild, gamey nose with leather, earth, funk, pepper and olive. Same profile on the palate, but comes across too light/dilute and could also use a bit more fruit. Lot of good stuff, but ultimately think the vintage holds it back. (1825 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 8/31/2018: Back on form, this is coming along nicely. Even more savory, smoky porky development since my last bottle a couple of years ago.
On day 2 that lovely roasted chicory note starts to come through.
Next bottle in 2-3 years. (1117 views)
Tasted by Vietty on 6/6/2018: Pop and pour. A wild ride from the very beginning. The nose was like riding a horse out in a field of savory herbs. Flavors of red fruit with pepper and a touch of raw red meat, all nicely integrated. Delicate texture. Gamey without tasting like full on brett. Very enjoyable and beautiful wine, drinking very nicely right now. (1917 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 6/2/2018 & rated 93 points: light ruby, almost transparent. Nose strikingly meaty, +barnyard -- blows off. Palate peppery, red cherries, bright; finish with a strongly iron/mineral streak. Lighter than I expected and surprisingly open on the PnP. Wild in every sense, though the class of the wine shows through. The very definition of a polarizing wine, the meat/barnyard/wild streak would turn off many, but I think I kind of love it (2074 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 9/3/2017 & rated 92 points: Medium red. earthy, peppery black fruit nose medium intense, also olives, violets, bacon and a hint of charcoal. Delicious elegant black cherry, pepper and beef flavours. A nice elegant balanced finish.

This wine was very gamey and savory but never punched you in the face, instead it's pleasure came from beauty more then intensity. (2099 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 4/11/2017: This bottle was in a grumpy spot. (897 views)
Tasted by dmalcolm on 10/9/2016 flawed bottle: Corked (2493 views)
Tasted by acyso on 8/24/2016 & rated 90 points: Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): There's plenty to love here on the nose, with pronounced olive aromatics and just a touch of the feral qualities that you're going to experience on the palate. This is a red-tinted syrah, lighter in style than I'd expect from Levet (likely a function of the vintage), but this delivers everything you'd expect. There palate shows an astounding amount of gaminess, and to be honest, a bit more fruit and stuffing would have played much better with it. Although not as good as the 2006 I had a week or so ago, there is still plenty to like in this wine. (3492 views)
Tasted by dmalcolm on 6/3/2016: A leaner expression of Cote Rotie at first, but really blossomed after 2+ hours of air. Drinking well now, and should continue to do so for several more years. (2487 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 5/2/2016 & rated 89 points: Coravin 5/2/16: Ruby with slight bricking; moderately aromatic nose with violets, gamey, white pepper, earth; palate is medium bodied, youthful structured tannins present, medium-plus acidity gives the whole palate lift, medium alcohol 13%?, some fruit but seems somewhat closed or reticent; medium finish. Nicely balanced throughout, still young, enjoyable and with character, but lacks next-level depth and complexity. Nose > palate. I will see what air does to the wine - 89-90 now.
45 min air: nose is more aromatic now with bacon fat, violets, pepper; palate is showing a bit more spice. Heading in a positive direction.
Has not changed much more with 3 hours of decanting. Rustic with more funk and deep fruit than Clape's style with his '14 Vin des Amis. If the palate stepped up to the nose, this could be excellent.
5/3/16: Similar to when first opened. The nose is actually quite good as above, and the palate is showing a bit more than when first opened and is starting to flesh out, but the palate still falls a bit short of what I expect for a wine in this price range. (2415 views)
Tasted by godx on 9/20/2015 & rated 91 points: Drank alongside 08 Chave Hermitage. More floral (violets) and less structured than the Chave. But similar leanness from the vintage. Great for drinking now but will definitely age for 5+ years. Excellent. (2307 views)
Tasted by dmalcolm on 5/10/2015: Slaton below nails it. Drinking very well now, and should even improve slightly over the next few years. (1662 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 11/22/2014: Killer bottle. This is lighter and will be ready sooner than any of the bookending vintages, and I love it for that. It is much less primary and more savory than when I first tasted it almost a year ago. It still has that lovely 2008 freshness though. On day 2, already showing incredible complexity and Levet perfume on the palate. Indian spices, toasted grain, just gorgeous. (1764 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 9/30/2014 & rated 91 points: Rotating Dinner Series- Bernard Levet Cote-Roties (Rustic House, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is showing off the dirty side with black pepper, bacon fat, leather, black cherries, earth, and a good dose of funk. There is a beautiful savory quality too that draws you in.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The structure is there, but it doesn't interfere too much. The feel is balanced and savory with black cherries, black pepper, bacon fat, earth, and leather tones.

Overall: This leaned much more towards the dirty and earthen side. It was beautifully balanced and it feels like it has some room to grow too. (2580 views)
Tasted by yofog on 2/17/2014 & rated 91 points: A good deal paler and redder than the 09, developing some herbs on the nose. Silky and fresh. Drinking really well. (1803 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 2/7/2014: A lighter vintage, lacking the density and usual Levet perfume from whole clusters, at least at this stage. Perhaps there was some destemming in this vintage, but it's just a guess. Crunchy red fruit, black olive, intense minerality as always. Delicious wine that starts out a little slight but really expands with significant aeration. So savory. Looking forward to drinking these while the surrounding vintages continue to develop. (789 views)
Tasted by godx on 4/18/2013 & rated 88 points: France 2013 – Northern Rhone; 4/17/2013-4/19/2013 (Ampuis): Tasted at the Domaine. Spicier nose with green peppercorns, red fruits and just a bit of development. Sweeter red fruits on the palate with chalky/powdery tannins and smooth mouthfeel. Some elegance here. Will be an earlier drinking wine than the 09 or 2010. Very good. 88+ (2560 views)
Tasted by cellarid on 5/20/2012 & rated 84 points: very underwhelming. overly dry and somewhat pruney on the nose. tell-tale iron, blood and smoked meat, but a complete lack of generosity where the fruit is concerned. Color is completely correct - zero bricking. This just seems totally dried out with bitter tannins. Tasted better a year ago. Purchased at the Domaine's shop in Ampuis. Perfect cork, etc. Sad. Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
