Tasted by Gnome on 11/25/2023: Had several nice wines over Thanksgiving weekend and this turned out to be the wine of the weekend. It stood out over a couple of Littorai (Chard and Pinot), a Quilceda Creek Cab, and a few others. Smooth, interesting, complex, great balance and acid. The Littorai Chard was close, but for $31.50 direct from the winery back then, such a great deal! (490 views)
Tasted by janettf on 6/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Shared at a wine industry event. Very popular! Black cherry with some licorice undertones. In a good spot. (725 views)
Tasted by erik.wullaert@skynet.be on 2/7/2023 & rated 92 points: SPLENDID wine, perfect body , smoort, can likely go on for another 5 or more years (1015 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 1/12/2023: Popped and poured. As soon as the cork cleared the bottle the release of the perfume filled the immediate area. Cherry, brown sugar, mocha and chocolate abounded. The palate tracked the bouquet with precision. The finish goes on forever. On the back label, Eric Baugher’s notes reference “exotic spice” from the 20% American new oak, but I do not detect that at this point. But the wine is absolutely exquisite! Balanced, sensual, and enticing. Every sip leads the nose back to the glass for more data … and another sip. The bottle disappeared so quickly that I had to open another one (which was finished a day later without any diminution in flavor or enjoyment qualities). So far, this is one of the two best wines I’ve had this year and is likely to remain in the top 5 by 123123. 72% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 6% Petite Sirah, 2% Mourvedre. Throwing heavy sediment. 14.8% alc., but without a trace of heat. With country ham and coq au vin. 01.12&13.23. Highly Recommended. (1018 views)
Tasted by Biggsy on 10/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Powerful nose - bramble, cassis and sweet spices. It’s in a lovely place, the fruit is still vibrant - maybe a touch of development to the fruit with a hint of raisin / stewed fruit coming through with time in the glass. Still retains really good acidity and a delicate layer of fine dusty tannins. Tobacco and coffee character on finish. Lovely. (1215 views)
Tasted by Romz on 4/25/2022 & rated 90 points: 18042022 - blind tasting dinner at 33 Blue room. Bottle courtesy of bro Joe. My initial guess was a 2005 Rioja but completely astounded when revealed as a 16 years old Zin dominant blend from the states. Immediate sign of aging from the dull garnet & brick rims. Lots of stewed berries & dried figs on the nose. Further ox in glass revealed creamy notes of x’mas pudding & vanilla. Gained much more weight on the palate after sitting in the glass. Polished and well integrated tannins with a mouth coating finish (1245 views)
Tasted by Ernestas on 12/4/2021 & rated 89 points: Rarely I am a happy man while drinking a Zin, but Ridge is something miraculous, just masters of balancing their wines. A blend of 74% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan and 6% Petite Sirah. Medium intensity aroma of smoky strawberries and cherries, dried raspberries, plum jam, liquorice, exotic spices, tobacco hints. Medium body and medium density with elegant structure, great concentration, roasted fruit flavours, powdery tannins with sandy texture, mild acidity, smoky fruit finish with roasted undertones. At its peak or slowly going down so drink up. (1409 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 11/26/2021 & rated 90 points: Had with Thanksgiving dinner. Holding up nicely. Relatively balanced; nice fruit; a little spice. Mature but will hold awhile longer. (1161 views)
Tasted by Rhwinetracker on 11/2/2021: Still going strong. Concentrated dark fruit, some oak, lots of acidity, and fine tannins. The concentration of the flavors and the acidity are the notable - this one is best with food. (1212 views)
Tasted by Eatmypixels on 6/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Great old wine. A little spicey. A little fruity. A little earthy. A little bit of everything mixed together to have this really good old zin (1529 views)
Tasted by Lord Marc on 5/8/2021 & rated 91 points: I was doing inventory last month and found this bottle so I tried it before it goes funky on me. I was so impressed, it was full bodied with some chewy tannins, I could taste the zin which is a nice change from my regular cab. Wish I had more, will definitely add more to my cellar if I can find some. (1435 views)
Tasted by Winokdub on 1/22/2021 & rated 91 points: Agree with radumas below. Very nice wine tough fully or maybe even past mature (1665 views)
Tasted by missionpk on 1/11/2021: Tasting very good. (1743 views)
Tasted by radumas on 10/3/2020 & rated 90 points: A mature, elegant, balanced wine. Fair amount of sediment stuck in the shoulder of the bottle. There is fruit (red fruit, plum/prune) and acid in balance, long finish, elegant nose and maturity that zins usually don’t achieve. A delight. (1711 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 9/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Geyserville '08 offers really attractive development and complete integration of juicy raspberry/plum fruit and high-quality American oak. Medium-bodied and well balanced at 14,5 % abv, it drinks with ease, and is great match with BBQ-style cooking. Should age gracefully for several years more. Hats off! (2108 views)
Tasted by drmarclevine on 8/9/2020 & rated 91 points: Dark red plums, Christmas spices, vanilla, and a not unpleasant dusty attic aroma. In the mouth it was cranberries, more plum, and a hint of sweet tannin. A very nice package aging gracefully. Probably at peak or getting close. Drink or hold. (1360 views)
Tasted by Rhwinetracker on 7/18/2020 & rated 88 points: Currant, mint, dark fruit and some new oak. Not the best Geyserville I have had, but very good. (1039 views)
Tasted by askoje on 7/3/2020 & rated 93 points: Dark ripe raspberries and blackberries on the nose with spice/herb and baked pie crust. Incredible nose once it gets more and more air.
Very nice on the palate. This is an exceptional Geyserville. Fruit driven, nice acidity, oak well integrated, overall balance tremendous and a very long finish. This reminds me of a vanilla, cherry and chocolate dessert my grandparents used to make. This wine is still so much alive. (1068 views)
Tasted by rjsmall on 6/12/2020: Deer, clear red colour. Cranberry and cherry on nose. Similar taste along with spice, liquorice and a touch of vanilla / oak. Fresh with a long finish. Multi-layered and lovely - drinking beautifully. One of the most enjoyable wines had so far this year. (957 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 3/2/2020 & rated 96 points: Deep, rich, complex, nuanced and delicious. An exceptional wine. (1491 views)
Tasted by Delli on 1/25/2020 & rated 91 points: The wine is drinking well but the fruit is fading so drink it now.

He wine is clear with modest sentiment and staining in the bottle. The wine is purple with a crimson edge and heavy tearing.

The nose is integrated red and blue fruit. The nose has red plumb, raspberry, black currant, dried Oliver, tomato leaf, dill and black pepper.

The plate is consistent. Tannins and acidity is medium-plus, the alcohol content is high, the body is full, the fine is lean and the complexity is high. The finish is round black currant.

Tasted by mhudes on 11/11/2019 & rated 93 points: Watching Monday Night Football with Walter. Pnp. Reddish purple in color. Violets and cola on the nose. In the mouth, I get blackberries, dark cherries and cocoa powder. Full bodied, almost brawny. Additional complexities lurk in the background. Went nicely with meatballs in cherry sauce. Bottles like this will last for years, but drinking very well right now. (1329 views)
Tasted by nanoose on 10/26/2019: Wonderful wine. Dark colour ripe black fruit cherry and plums thick mouth feel spicy long finish with ? Fennel. (1409 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 10/15/2019 & rated 89 points: This is my last bottle of this vintage and it seems that the fruit is fading now. It is still quite enjoyable with dark red fruits, bramble and minerality with a smooth, easy going finish. (1310 views)
Tasted by Ozsnapper on 10/15/2019 & rated 94 points: Last of these from my cellar. Was worried it might be past its peak but it was lovely. Still big and interesting bot nicely mellowed as well. Good to see these can live for a decade. (1131 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

2008 Ridge Geyserville

WINE LABEL:
* 72% Zinfandel, 20% Carigane, 6% Petite Sirah, 2% Mataro (Mourvedre). 14.8% alcohol by volume.
* Bottled in Jan 2010. Two consecutive years of limited rainfall challenged the growing season, but because yields were low, the vines escaped serious water stress. Sampling began in mid-August, showing ripeness on track for a month-long September harvest. In tank, color and tannin extraction was unusually rapid, as were uninoculated primary fermentations. We reduced pump-overs and pressed early, avoid harsher tannins.. Zinfandel and carignane showed exceptional quality and form the core of the blend. (Wines from the petite sirah parcels were two tannic; the six percent included comes from a field blend.) Natural secondary fermentation finished quickly and we coudl rack to barrel a month ahead of schedule.
* Twenty percent new oak adds exotic spice. Superb concentration and firm acid will allow this find Zinfandel to develop over the next ten to fifteen years.

Ridge Geyserville

(Ridge Spring 2012 Wine Club notes)

In 1966, Ridge made its first Geyserville from a strip of river rock and clay soils along the abandoned San Francisco and Northern Pacific tracks. Over time, we have added two adjoining vineyards on this same defined site. Each vintage is distinct but typical flavor characteristics include the blackest of blackberry fruit, ripe plum, cedar, and a distinctive mineral quality.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
