Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 9 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/1/2015: Found one more bottle in the back of the cellar. Still tasty when popped-and-poured, then quickly aged in glass. No longer really interesting once open 30 minutes. (1558 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/7/2013: Slightly more fresh than my previous bottle, but similar flavor profile and it's time to drink up. (1553 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/29/2013 & rated 86 points: Less fresh than other bottles from a year or two ago. Lemon and lemon peel aromas and flavors, just more mature and less fresh or vibrant than before. (1781 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/18/2013 & rated 88 points: Lemon and lemon zest aromas, all very fresh and vibrant on both nose and palate. Lots of energy, minerality. Sensational value wine. Still going strong, I expect this should hold nicely for a few more years. (2012 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/28/2012 & rated 87 points: Lemon aromas with a bit of lemon zest, perhaps not quite as fresh as several bottles from last year. Lemon, lemon peel again on palate, still showing lots of acidity that's nicely in balance. Great value. I have a few more...time to drink up. (1908 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 5/17/2012 & rated 90 points: Excellent, balanced chardonnay. Comparable: Fernando Rodney on the Rays. (1033 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/27/2011 & rated 88 points: Lemon on nose with some faint floral elements. Lemon and lemon peel on palate with lots of acidity providing support through to finish. (1067 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/5/2011 & rated 89 points: Sharp, clean and crisp. Lots of orange and lemon on nose, mostly lemon and lemon zest on palate. Great energy and acidity. Screaming bargain. (1173 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 3/16/2010 & rated 90 points: Immediately has a very lively sense to the acidity - lots of verve. Little bit of sweet fruit and toast on the nose, with hints of earth and floral. Palate shows fruit that is less impressive than the lively acid, a touch of butteriness. A pleasing budget burgundy, this is a great deal QPR-wise. A solid 90 points, high for a Macon-Villages. (1288 views)

Bret Brothers

Producer website

Jean-Guillaume and Jean-Phillipe Bret began their winemaking careers in 1992, studying oenology and viticulture at top wine schools in Burgundy and then continuing with practical education at some of the top wineries in the world - Rothschild, Verget, Far Niente, Ridge, Comte-Lafond.
Their estate, Domaine de la Soufrandiere, began in 1947 with a single hectare of vines in Pouilly-Vinzelles (the now famous Climate 'les Quarts'). The next 50 years were spent increasing the family land holdings and working with the Cave Coopérative de Vinzelles, which commercialised nearly all of the grapes in the region. In 1998, the Brets withdrew from the Cooperative in anticipation of Jean-Phillipe and Jean-Guillaume taking the reigns at La Soufrandiere and the rest is history. 2000 was the first vintage that was vinified, aged and bottled by La Soufrandiere.

The Bret Brothers label started in 2001, with the aim of making top terroir-driven wines in Southern Burgundy. Some of the grapes come from their estate land holdings, and some come from single plot vineyards averaging 50 years in age. The Brets manage all aspects of the viticulture process, from bud break to harvest, and work in a completely biodynamic fashion (it should be noted that nearly all of the wines of La Soufrandiere are certified biodynamic).

A favourite of top sommeliers and wine critics alike, the wines of the Bret Brothers are truly wines of people, place and time. They have been championed by the likes of Allen Meadows of Burghound, who writes "If you're not familiar with the wines, I can't suggest strongly enough that you familiarize yourself with them."

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
