(603 views) | | Tasted by lewisrise on 5/19/2018 & rated 92 points: Nose of wet cedar and eucalyptus. Dark fruit with cherry and spice on the finish. (1901 views) | | Tasted by rojoloco on 4/27/2018 & rated 89 points: Good for 3 nights. Best the second, but good all three. Smooth black berry flavors. Back palate tannins even on the third night. Tasty wine though not a lot of depth. Perfectly drinkable still if stored properly. (1883 views) | | Tasted by Oldmanzin on 11/10/2017 & rated 87 points: Black fruit is still first chair. Assigns spice and dusty tannins play a good part of the flavor profile. Not the most complex wine I have ever had, but still enjoyable to drink. This is getting near the end of the drinking window. (2035 views) | | Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 2/9/2016 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind. Bright ruby red color turning crimson at the rim with a transparent edge. It has an attractive nose of earth, smoke, black and red currants, tobacco, and meat. The palate is full-bodied but displays a delicate balance and texture. The aforementioned flavors are consistent all throughout. Finishes with nice, fleshy, refined tannin with a hint of spice. Drink now until 2023. 90+ (3825 views) | | Tasted by Rtpana on 12/10/2013 & rated 85 points: The wine looks Garnet colored. It smells Black currant (cassis) and tastes like Violet. The body is Medium. The wine has Angular texture. The wine finishes Short. Would drink again if offered but not buy it for myself. (6558 views) | | Tasted by CieloVista on 8/23/2013 & rated 86 points: Ruby red with aromas of red berries and herbs. It was light bodied, a little tart and on the palate it had flavors of strawberries. The finish was lingering and warm. It is better with food to mellow it out. (6597 views) | | Tasted by RussK on 6/8/2013 & rated 89 points: Russk. Rioja nose and feel. A touch too much acid. (6932 views) | | Tasted by RussK on 5/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Russk. Lyth. Solid acidity. Should buy. 90+ (6892 views) | | Tasted by apardoe on 10/9/2012 & rated 85 points: Very straightforward Spanish table wine. A little sharp but otherwise quite reasonable. (7837 views) | | Tasted by Alpos on 8/17/2012 & rated 85 points: Much too acidic and tart for me. It did mellow a little on the second night, but still not something I would drink again, way out of balance. (5782 views) | | Tasted by matro on 7/12/2012 & rated 89 points: Nice wine, food friendly. Good acidity. It is refreshing to taste a wine with "only" 13.5% alcohol. (5524 views) | | Tasted by Mustard Tiger on 5/22/2012 & rated 82 points: I've seen this for $9 to $10 in the Midwest and double that on the East Coast--not entirely unusual for many of the low end wines imported by Eric Solomon or Jorge Ordonez. Though I'm not entirely sure why. This cuvee is surprisingly tight and closed with aggressive, youthful, tannins. After a few hours it starts to come around with aromas of sour cherries, blackberry, chocolate, alcohol, and banana? However, aggressive, drying tannins and abrasive acidity plague the taste. Whole cluster? Seems like a lot of seed and stem. Inoculated yeasts? Some estery qualities? It's not entirely bad news, but it's hard to be too positive. I've tried three bottles in as many months and none were all that interesting. Maybe another year? One definitely gets the impression that the underlying fruit is of superior quality. I think this is a wine to watch and taste frequently. I've begged for this producer to come out with a wine in this price point and in this style. Unfortunately, I may have been terribly wrong. But this could easily turn round. (5428 views) | | Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/6/2012 & rated 88 points: Ribera del Duero & Environs Tasting (San Francisco Wine Trading Company, San Francisco, California): Medium dark ruby color; cedar, tart cassis, ripe berry nose; tight, tart red berry, currant, cedar palate; medium-plus finish 88+ points (Merlot & Tempranillo) (3786 views) | | Tasted by Alpton on 3/28/2012 & rated 90 points: Tempranillo, Cab and Merlot blend aged for 12 months in 2 years old French oak. I wish I had left this bottle down for 5 more years, as the fruit flavor felt still undeveloped. Decanted for 2 hours. Blackberry, spices and cedar on the nose. Minerally driven palate with harsh tannins, dark fruit and lingering finish (retail $19.99). (4362 views) | | Tasted by strongry on 2/23/2012 & rated 92 points: Very complex. For my unrefined tastes, one of the most enjoyable wines I have had in a long time. Loved it. (3524 views) | | Tasted by Morrillism on 1/7/2012 & rated 88 points: Took quite a while to open up. Decant or pour a glass and let it sit. Very close to pouring this one down the drain. Initially weak nose, very sour, flat, and little that was interesting. Tried it again 45 minutes later and this was an entirely different wine. Nice mouth feel, pleasant mineral notes, spices, some black fruits, modest complexity. I may buy another and lay it down for several years just out of curiosity. (4804 views) | | Tasted by heketor on 12/2/2011 & rated 90 points: Quite nice wine. Very fresh and fruity. Relatively young ( 12 months in oak) very good quality-price relation. ( less than 10 € ). (5125 views) | | Tasted by ecola on 10/24/2011 & rated 86 points: Good food wine. Dry tannins. Simple yet very drinkable. (4957 views) | | Tasted by sojoknuckle on 8/29/2011 & rated 88 points: very nice and smooth enjoyed this as a cocktail and would do this again very nice (4784 views) | | Tasted by sojoknuckle on 8/29/2011 & rated 90 points: very nice and smooth enjoyed this as a cocktail and would do this again very nice (5038 views) | | Tasted by RussK on 8/11/2011 & rated 88 points: RUSSK WWrhs (5129 views) | | Tasted by cab on 8/5/2011: This won't be much of a tasting note because this was too sweet and oaky for me. Ann liked it better I just couldn't get into it. (5168 views) | | Tasted by Pascal on 6/8/2011 & rated 85 points: forgot to remove those 2. A very good affordable wine with a good structure, a good buy (5846 views) | | Tasted by Decanthor on 6/8/2011 & rated 87 points: This wine has never been able to match what I experienced at the tasting. Again, it takes forever to open up, a luxury that I often don't have during the weekdays. But when it does, it is very good. That being said, I will not be buying any more. As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate - but with a rustic edge. The Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumers . Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak - add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle - and occasionaly not-so-subtle - leathery mouthfeel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.Spain Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia Wine Map on weinlagen-info
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial).
