Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by spendergast on 11/23/2018 & rated 90 points: This wine was good but certainly not great. A golden yellow hue with somewhat subdued notes of golden fruit, lime, with decent acidity and moderate finish. Personally, I think Peter Michael's chardonnays are far better for a fraction of the cost. Then again, it is fun to drink Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet wines from time to time. (1317 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 12/9/2017 flawed bottle: Saturday lunch with Eddie (Masseria, DC): Oxidized, considering the provenance, premoxed. (2784 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 2/19/2017: Rain storms and burgundy (and rhone): A story of Favre's birthday in Los Angeles. (N/Naka): Nice weight and depth on the wine, showing more secondary flavors of earth and spice but with a good clean flavor of golden fruit (3389 views)
Tasted by ATBridge on 8/12/2016: I was initially concerned when this was poured, a deep golden color, however there were no signs of oxidation and this was a brilliant bottle of white burgundy. Incredible density and rich mouthfeel with a lingering finish. So nice to get a sound bottle. (2556 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 6/24/2016: Looooooong finish, youngish but not too young, precise honey finish. Favorite of the flight. (1676 views)
Tasted by R. Burgundy on 4/22/2016 & rated 89 points: Nose quite advanced; palate still nice, but more advanced than it should be; not what I would expect for the pedigree (1992 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 12/24/2013 & rated 85 points: Yellow color with little bouquet and a nondescript mineral flavor. No nuance, no depth, no soaring flights of fancy. I am struck by how different the descriptions of this wine are, albeit mostly very positive. Perhaps I had an off bottle, but I do think that too many people have bought into the Burgundy hype. For wine drinkers who wax eloquent about mineral notes in wine, Montrachet is not a wine that is supposed to have this characteristic at the fore. I have had superb Montrachet, but this isn't in that class. If you want to know what a great Montrachet should taste like, drink a Marcassin or Aubert Chardonnay, and pay a great deal less money.  Tasted by burgburgburg on 12/21/2012 & rated 92 points: pop-n-pour; golden yellow; seems the provenance is not ideal; lime, spice, mineral, creamy butter and subtle floral on the nose; textured palate with good minerality and acidity; 20s+ finish (2896 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Lieu-dit Cru "Blind White" Dinner Featured the Wine of Henri Boillot (L2O - Chicago IL): Tasted blind in a Montrachet flight. Slightly advanced aromas and flavors of apple and pear. Slightly lean, well textured, but short with a moderate finish. Somewhat lost sitting in between the amazing 1999s from Boillot and Girardin. Still not nearly as good as a great bottle (from the same case) I opened in January. Sigh...that's white Burgundy. (3432 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 5/1/2012 & rated 94 points: Amazing line-up, one-word impressions only: This drank very well - brilliant structure, great presence (3488 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/26/2012 & rated 96 points: Acker Merrall BYO (Sepia - Chicago IL): Slightly floral aromas with lemon and lemon peel. Ripe apple flavors to start, followed by a big dollop of citrus. Incredibly intense, steely and powerful with an energetic finish. This completely overshadowed the Boillot 2001 Chevalier-Montrachet tasted alongside, and was better than a wonderful 2000 Montrachet I remember from this summer. (5006 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 4/10/2011: Dry white wine of the year for mine thus far. Engaging aromas of white peach, gunflint, dried flowers and aniseed. In the mouth it has a minerally spine that is sheathed by high glycerol, sappy fruits. It has power with poise and the longest finish that leaves a wonderful calling card of orchard fruits and minerals, near perfect white wine. (1894 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 2/7/2010: DRC Superbowl (Phoenix, AZ): Lick licking a rock, this wine is all minerality. Serious nervosite, this wine will be spectacular in time. Now, though, it's a bit too tightly wound. (2626 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 2/2/2010 & rated 96 points: Groundhog Day!: Wow, one smell puts a smile on your face. Huge nose dominated by tropical fruit with some minerality. Each smell brings new nuance and another smile. On the palate this delivers rich, exuberant, buttery fruit but with perfect weight, awesome texture, perfect balance, great acidity and a knock-out finish. I'm a bit of a Montrachet newbie, but if this is any indication I need to be seeking these out more frequently. (2813 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 2/2/2010 & rated 96 points: Tasting Group Dinner - It Was A Great Run (Heidi's, Minneapolis): Poised, elegant, and expressive. The palate sings with a melange of tropical fruit, butter, sea shell, and cucumber. Gorgeously balanced and proportioned acidity and oak. Fantastically balanced, complex, layered flavors without a hint of weight. Utterly delicious and my WOTN. (2823 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 9/12/2003 & rated 96 points: Lovely, pineapple, apple nose; lovely, lemon, coconut, mineral palate with great structure; very long finish (1912 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
