Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lozatron on 10/27/2023: Wednesday night steak night: Another auction purchase. Deep purple. Lovely nose - lots going on but again, clean as a whistle, lots of zip - cranberry maybe, some honeysuckle, a vague hint of forest floor. The palate is still fully there - the tannins are noticeable but in line, the acid is bracing, the structure is very much to the fore but it holds the fruit up well. This was absolutely ready to go but good grief more life in it yet. Yummers. (341 views)
Tasted by kristjan on 12/10/2021: Muted on opening, came to life after a few hours in the decanter. Remarkably dark and concentrated for over 20 years old, but properly stored throughout. This is still one of my favourite wines, last bottle of 13. (621 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 10/10/2018 & rated 89 points: Highly aromatic, plummy and tobacco. Velvety in the mouth with resolved tannins, solid acidity, and crystallized fruit. Mature with broad flavors, and ok length. Drink now and over the next few years. (1332 views)
Tasted by learningandenjoying on 5/7/2017 & rated 92 points: B30; G5; 4*+8*+4*+8.5+8.5+4*+4.5=92+; Very dark, nearly impenetrable red velvet color with very slight oxidizing detectable on the edges where some light gets through! Not highly aromatic, but some overripe cherry and cardboard notes are predominant; mouthfeel is smooth upon entry, then swallowing highlights the tannins and acidity as air is re-established on the tongue. Good depth of flavor with rich cherry and faint menthol. This could really be called "light" for a Petit Sirah. Quite nice from that respect. I imagine this has mellowed considerably over the years as it does not strike me as a particularly well-balanced wine, but it is now nicely integrated and very drinkable with smooth tannin that gives wonderful depth to a long finish. I would not be surprised if well-cellared bottles would have many more years of life left, although I doubt it will improve much and will likely start an oxidizing downhill drift. It was worth my $110 charity auction price. A very nice wine tasting experience of a nearly 18-year old wine that was well-made. (1969 views)
Tasted by andyb505 on 4/30/2017: Supposed to be past it. Nice colour. Slight menthol nose. Fruity, pear drops taste. Still good tannins. (1706 views)
Tasted by markydecker on 7/21/2013 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous note. This is in a really good place right now and drinking beautifully. Strong tannic backbone, recommend at least 2 to 3 hour decant. (3418 views)
Tasted by markydecker on 3/1/2013 & rated 92 points: Aging gracefully as do most Ridge Petite Sirahs. Spices, black fruits, vanilla, currants. Plummy nose, still dark purple to the rim, opening up and smoothing out after a 2 hour decant. Still young, and drinking beautifully. Glad I still have 5 left! (3178 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 2/7/2012 & rated 89 points: Dark and inky. Tight blue fruit nose with a bit of earth and spice. Nice blueberry and spice flavours and a huge tannic finish. (3174 views)
Tasted by godx on 2/3/2012 & rated 89 points: Bill's Monthly Lunch - February 2012 (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind - dark red, darkest wine yet. New worldish nose with blue and black fruits and some vanilla coming through as well. Flavours of slightly roasted or dried fruits with spice and hints of green tobacco. The structure here is mostly resolved and this is drinking very well. Very good. (3369 views)
Tasted by Patrick on 8/13/2009: Deep purple red; slightly green nose with a little cream showing; started out pretty angular but smoothed out over time. Needs a little air to get going. (3314 views)
Tasted by Ian S on 9/27/2008: Still almost impentrable dark purple in colour, with just the faintest sign of age at the rim and noticeable 'legs'. Blackberry and black pepper on the nose, plus a hint of cured meats.

On the palate it's still very richly fruited, in the manner of a good (but not over-ripened) Barossa Shiraz. There's a little tannin grip and the acidity is just about sufficient for the fruit. Very enjoyable, though perhaps without any great complexity, the first few sips offer more interest than those that follow. i.e. it's immediately impressive, but struggles (at this stage) to offer complexity to excite through 2nd and 3rd glasses. (1986 views)
Tasted by kristjan on 7/13/2007 & rated 90 points: Still needs hours of decanting to open up. (2053 views)
Tasted by win on 12/29/2006 & rated 87 points: Sampled at large tasting - minimal notes. (2022 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 1/26/2004: Wine: Petite Sirah Napa Valley York Creek 1999 Score: 84 Price: $24 region: Napa Issue: Web Only (2003) Veers to the earthy, mulchy side. Herbal flavors dominate. There’s enough sour cherry and plum fruit to fill in the void, finishing with dry gritty tannins. Drink now through 2008. 1,805 cases made. (862 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 12/3/2003: Blind Petite Sirah and BBQ: Tannic with spice, dry earth, minerals, and piney oak. Some fruit, but also a lot of dirt. Okay. (1669 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 8/9/2002 & rated 92 points: My House: Almost black purple; big dark fruit & oak in nose; heavy t’s, difficult to drink w/cold. (856 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
