Community Tasting Notes (average 94.7 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 157 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by melvinyeowq on 1/27/2024 & rated 65 points: Park90 / Grand Cru SQN Masterclass: 87.5% Grenache, 11% Syrah, 1.5% Viognier; 15.7% alcohol. First impression was this was so flat - anexample of a high-alcohol, extracted wine that had completely fallen apart with age. Pruney, cherry vodka flavours; tannins were all over the place. (773 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 1/27/2024 & rated 88 points: Tasted at the Sine Qua Non Q.E.D. The Masterclass Experience, part of the Fruits of the Vine 2024 at The Singapore Edition organised by Grand Cru.

Bright purple- red in colour with a bit of disjointment among the elements here. Fresh berries with some blueberries and greeness. Finish has lots of savoury and dried cured meat notes. (400 views)
Tasted by Peech on 11/3/2023 & rated 95 points: decanted 1 hour after opening and served after 2 hours in the decanter. This was more open and a little more flamboyant compared to Pictures, with sweet and ripe fruit of course, almost like blueberry jam. (546 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/26/2023 & rated 92 points: 4th Saturday Brown Bagger (R&D’s): Blind. Dusty crimson red color. Aromas of raspberry, dried herbs, sandalwood, sage and rosemary. Full-bodied with medium tannins and flavors of mixed red and black fruit and peppery spice. Midway through I began to wonder if this was the grenache. 92-93 pts.

Good, but not showing as much complexity as the syrah, but then again this was treated a bit differently. The cork was pulled 5.5 hours before the flight was served and it had been decanted for 2 of those hours. About 3 hours later with dinner this was much more open; definitely give this plenty of air at this stage. (1151 views)
Tasted by Minnesota on 8/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Consistent with 3/2018 tasting note and impressions. (1026 views)
Tasted by warrenpeace on 1/27/2023 & rated 99 points: Wow again ! Maybe even better a few months later but can age from here for a few years (1058 views)
Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 11/7/2022 & rated 97 points: Exuberant nose of red fruit jam and plum.

In the mouth, it actually takes a certain talent to offer a wine at 15.7° that is supple on the palate and endowed with exquisite sapidity without the alcohol coming out at any time. But Manfred Krankl is a great winemaker. The mouth remains fresh while the juice is enormously rich. It overflows with raspberry and garrigue. The wine has a magnificent structure with a silky touch, coated in sweet vanilla flavors. It's soft and dense. Grand finish, finely spiced and woody on an impressive length.

A great Grenache (1354 views)
Tasted by warrenpeace on 8/26/2022 & rated 98 points: Wow ! Classic SQN...no more need be said. At peak but a number of years left. Great fruit, acidity and balance (1213 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 7/25/2022 & rated 97 points: 4 hour slo ox, 2 hour decant. Strong nose of red and dark fruit, floral notes, a hint of oak, and some secondary notes. Full bodied but civilized without heat from the 15.7% alcohol. Smooth tannins with moderate amount left for some more longevity. Smooth mouthfeel. Long, long finish. Seems to be exactly in it's sweet spot. Very enjoyable wine. (1207 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 3/26/2022 & rated 95 points: Decanted for one hour. Aromatic nose of black raspberry, red cherry, red licorice and garrigue. Ripe black raspberry, red cherry, red licorice, garrigue and vanilla on the palate. Very long, layered finish with outstanding depth. Full bodied. Served with reverse seared strip steak Diane.  Tasted by MJP Hou TX on 6/20/2021 & rated 95 points: No formal notes. 2nd half of bottle consumed on day two was fantastic! This wine is a beast and needs some OX to open but after that it was delicious!

Thanks for sharing DJ Warner! (3718 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 4/9/2021 & rated 97 points: Superb!
Big wine, glorious dark fruit, lovely texture and a very long finish. (1949 views)
Tasted by jblaporte on 2/11/2021 & rated 94 points: Very tasty and fruit forward. Day 1 Half bottle decanted for 2h using Coravin. Day 2 2nd half opened and slow ox for 6 hours + 2 hours decanted. Much better on 2nd try. More integrated and less “heat”. Definitely needs air time. Cheers! (1963 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 12/24/2020 & rated 95 points: Rich, delicious, dark raspberry fruit, leather flavors, excellent structure, ample finish, full-bodied, terrific fruit forward wine. (1932 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 12/13/2020 & rated 98 points: Kleur: Zeker voor een Grenache opvallend donkerrood. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Smaak / Afdronk: 19 + Algemeen / potentieel: 10 = 98/100

Color: Especially for a Grenache striking dark red. Aroma / bouquet: At this stage less pronounced and expressive than 2011, softer and more refined, more elegant. A range of delicate fragrance impressions, a hint of gingerbread, wild strawberries, sweet condiment and refined wood. Taste / Aftertaste: Also a typical SQN on the palate. Mouth-filling, extremely concentrated but in ultimate harmony. A limited but pleasant acidity, buttery tannins and so much filling that the 15.7% alcohol stands out only because of a subtle and pleasant alcoholic sweetness. General / potential: The umpteenth bizarrely beautiful wine from Manfred Krankl, made of 87.5% Grenache, 11% Syrah and 1.5% Viognier. A party in the glass! 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Taste / Finish: 19 + Overall / potential: 10 = 98/100 (2092 views)

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about two hours.

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of currants, black pepper, dark chocolate and plum. Flavors of currants, plums and black raspberries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink with air or hold. (1609 views)
Tasted by KenK on 11/9/2020 & rated 90 points: Good, but fruit was not as dense and bold as one would expect. Nothing special, but ok. Wonder if it was a slightly hurt bottle, but no sense of being corked, heat damaged, or oxidized. (1823 views)
Tasted by watches86 on 9/21/2020 & rated 96 points: Simply amazing wine that was decanted for eight hours with very minimal signs of age. This will last another easy eight plus more years. (1506 views)
Tasted by dougie on 3/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Quite impressive. Decanted for 2 hours. Drank over 4 hours. Opened up a lot. Changed and the only time I that alcohol stood out was the very end- strange. The bigness with purity was unique. (1828 views)
Tasted by jmprusko on 3/10/2020 & rated 98 points: Wines for the Apocalypse, pre-quarrantine (1649 views)
Tasted by hanasowner on 2/29/2020 & rated 97 points: Wow...great bottle...splash decanted and sat for an hour before the first pour...gravel and pepper spice, dark fruit...kept swirling and the flavors really opened up...not a trace of alcohol going down...smooth as can be with a long finish. (1715 views)
Tasted by Jon Mills on 2/29/2020 & rated 95 points: It’s always nice to do something special when Feb 29th comes around every four years.
This was my first SQN wine - they are significantly outside my usual price range, but I picked this up as a (relative) sales bargain a few years ago. We had friends round for dinner who love Rhône varietals so we cracked this open.
Decanted for a couple of hours before drinking. Really lovely wine - big flavours, long finish, but no excessive taste of alcohol. If I get the opportunity to try SQN again I would definitely take it. (1615 views)
Tasted by lion@corewines.com on 12/6/2019 & rated 95 points: This needed a good rwo hours of air to get the rigid tannins a bit softer. Still very bold and metallic, the fruit seems very young and over time more silkiness will develop. Long finish as expected and good fun. (1984 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 9/28/2019 & rated 95 points: Holy moly, where did this one come from!? This had the nose of full throttle drunken elderberries and freshly baked blackberry pie with pepper and spice and everything nice! This tastes like whole cluster Grenache If there really is such a thing. Black and blue, pepper and spice, black cherry cola, mouth coating, inky. Dissecting out all of the notes that were swirling around, it would take me probably an hour, and everyone would be bored and probably stop reading. This was massive. And has probably a couple of decades left! (2011 views)
Tasted by markcic on 8/31/2019 & rated 97 points: An amazing bottle of wine. Opened 2 hours prior to going to dinner, decanted through a vinturi then re-bottled and took to dinner at La Goulue in NYC where they decanted it for me and it sat another hour and half or so while we had cocktails and a bottle of white CDP. The nose was all red fruit with a tinge of licorice. The palate was dark red berries, red cherry, red plums, kirsh and mocha. The finish was very smooth and went on forever. At one point I took a sip looked down as my watch and a minute later I could still taste it. Sadly my only bottle but worth drinking with good friends. Funny that my wife who only likes cabernets and pinot noirs really loved this wine. SQN may have converted her. (1944 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
