Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 79 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kenv on 10/5/2023 & rated 92 points: WCC Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blind Dinner (The Chef's Table in Café Capriccio, Albany, NY): [Double-decanted around noon; left bottle uncorked until 4:30 pm.] Tart, muted nose. Even more backward than the previous wine [2007]. Definitely needs more time. Hard to judge. 92-?? (619 views)
Tasted by jamesabdavis on 4/9/2023: Lovely nose, classic Grenache CNDP. Pure red fruit. Herbs. A bit alcoholic.
Alcohol again present on the palate, muting lovely pure and intense black and red fuit flavours.
This benefited from chilling: the alcohol blew off and the really lovely stone fruit character emerged more strongly. (540 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 4/5/2023: This was a disappointing wine for our Seder. (508 views)
Tasted by capacious on 11/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Balance between fruit and backbone could get better. A little too spicy, almost sweet. Needed offset by a very flavorful baby back rib. (738 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 8/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Lab BBQ. Quite a bit of earth/funk on the nose and the palate, followed by rich fruit and a nice mouthfeel. This is a very solid and well-made CdP that leans a bit toward a modern style. Have two left and they should hold for a few years. (784 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 7/17/2021: Last of six, and this one showed the best. Spice, garrigue, dark honey, ripe, soft fruit. The 05 of this bottling started us on the path to European wines from big CA wines. Now, except for Pegau, and a Vieux Donjon every once in a while, we rarely drink Rhône and CA wine at all. I liked this one though and the earthy flavors. Ann said the wine was too sweet, and didn’t prefer it. (1494 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 4/8/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanted about 90 minutes, little to no sediment. Fresh berry, but also a darker, more brooding fruit. Some garrigue, little spice. Integrated and fairly polished. (1543 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 1/9/2021 & rated 94 points: Even better than last bottle. Wonderful fruit, acidity, balance, length etc etc. wish I had more. (1517 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 5/23/2020: Quite good. Stylish, serious red cherry fruit, moreish. Good balance. Lacking detail and complexity on finish. Think she's making better wines from recent vintages, but still a good showing for the vintage. (1879 views)
Tasted by Wineson on 12/14/2019 & rated 91 points: Very tasty (1923 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/7/2019 & rated 92 points: Still young, but certainly approachable; creamy, round, smooth, som chocolate here, a Rolland sort of wine - but not with the local feel. Very easy to like on a gray & rainy day. Still young.

Tasted by vinhonotte on 11/1/2019 & rated 92 points: GrandCuvee - CDP Dinner (New Ubin Seafood - Chijmes): A large bouquet, as if fresh flowers plucked from the fields, cherry, and leaves. We can get roses, blackberry, and peppercorns on the palate, with a good tannic structure and fresh acids. A pretty well made one (1647 views)
Tasted by Wineson on 9/11/2019 & rated 92 points: Very good (1630 views)
Tasted by dlowrey99 on 8/15/2019 & rated 93 points: No formal tasting notes. Quick table decant at the restaurant (HoPR). First taste, fruit heavy/muted on the palate, tannins present but weak. Opened up over the course of the next 90 minutes. Great depth, full body, med acidity, med(+?) alcohol with just a bit of heat on the finish. Rich black fruit, anise, white pepper, with notes of savory herbs and dark earthy soil. Tannins pointed, but well-integrated to round everything out. Wonderful balance with a long finish. Enjoyed with a traditional prime rib dinner; enough in the wine to match the fatty/flavorful meal. Wish we hadn't finished the bottle as quickly so I could have tasted it over the next few hours. Has 3 years left in its prime at least. (1484 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 6/23/2019: This bottle showed better than a bottle from about three years ago. It is still ripe and fruity but it seems to have mellowed some. Accents of pepper and spices. Eric and I liked it more than Ann who’s said it was “just too much,” and that she couldn’t drink it. (1406 views)
Tasted by winedrinker5 on 4/21/2019 & rated 87 points: Opened sweet, but then settled into a smooth lighter taste (1451 views)
(1659 views)
Tasted by Wineson on 2/17/2019 & rated 92 points: Smooth, fleshy, tasty, even creamy. (1481 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 1/16/2019 & rated 90 points: This was solid, but come across as a bit hot. Will hold off for awhile. (1520 views)
Tasted by CarpeVinum on 11/24/2018 & rated 92 points: Drinking perfectly Very enjoyable. (1616 views)
Tasted by Larre on 11/10/2018 & rated 94 points: Excellent C9P effort, layers of dark fruit, liquorice and herbs. In a perfect drinking window now, but should evolve nicely for a decade. 94+ (1545 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 5/9/2017: This wine continues to deliver. More and more this is my favorite style of modern CNP given its relative balance and the fact it leans red fruit and not into the black (2754 views)
Tasted by Badbarn on 3/17/2017 & rated 93 points: Popped, decanted, and poured. A powerful wine with notes of black fruit, licorice, and hints of pepper that coalesce as the velvet tannins lead to a blissful finish. Enjoyed amongst family. (2667 views)
Tasted by Lasseth61 on 3/9/2017 & rated 93 points: A very elegant and complex wine.
On the nose lots of red fruits, herbs, candy, licorice, strawberries, walnuts...
The taste is a bit more powerful with darker fruits, herbs, licorice...
I like it a lot! (2773 views)
Tasted by lkilpio on 10/30/2016 & rated 94 points: The taste is very full-bodied, fruity and intensive, with almost port-wine-like character. The aromas and flavors of Christmas spices and ripe fruits are lovely. The strong alcohol content leads to somewhat heavy impression, but in a good sense. The tannins have resolved, however, and the wine feels soft on the palate. This is a very fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is in an excellent, early mature phase at the moment. (3004 views)

Domaine Saint Préfert

Producer website - Read more about Domaine Saint Prefert
Isabel Ferrando purchased this old Châteauneuf domaine from the Serre family in 2002. In 1920, Fernand Serre bought the property, located in the southern quarter of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and became one of the first in the region to estate-bottle his production. Isabel is now the guardian of very old vines, mostly Grenache, some of which are over 100 years old. Although the domaine was never very well-known before, Isabel’s intention, with the assistance of star oenologist Philippe Cambi and under the tutelage of Henri Bonneau, is to produce wines that can rival the very best of the appellation. She practices organic farming, crop-thinning to ensure low yields, aging in demi-muids and small oak barrels, and bottling without filtration. © Michael Skurnik Wines.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
