Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 70 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by GGinSF on 11/6/2023 & rated 91 points: Straddles styles of classic & modern CdP. Strong cassis fruit, with good secondary earthiness and a touch of herbs de Provence. Tannins are still evident, and I think that this wine will continue to improve for up to a decade more. (525 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 9/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Another superb bottle of this. It‘s really in the zone, open, radiant but enough freshness to not be overpowering. Beautiful CdP of a very high level. (780 views)
Tasted by Tpmess on 8/7/2023 & rated 92 points: smokiness, mature, dark berry, tobacco flavors (613 views)
Tasted by Phenol73 on 6/4/2023 & rated 86 points: Dark ruby with some browning on the edges. Some hints of tertiary leather and notes of dried spices, but mainly just monolithic stewed dark fruits and a lot of alcohol. Full bodied, over-ripe, jammy. Lacking freshness and any sort of elegance. The hot weather shows and I'm not sure it was particularly well handled here. Disappointing. God knows how I am going to get through another 11 bottles... (726 views)
Tasted by Golf_Wine on 11/26/2022 & rated 91 points: First glass, A good wine at the tail end of still having some primary berries and fruits. Very smooth, fennel, cherries, leather. Last glass showed its age and I’d say at the tail end of its best days. Did not decant because the restaurant did not have a decanter but based on this bottle I would not decant, I would also not sit on any bottles a lot longer either. (995 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 8/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Final bottle of 12. Have rated it the same every time. Consistent and very good. Mid-way through secondary development. I like this spot and think it's a great time to drink, but with at least another five years in peak window. (1058 views)
Tasted by Vancouver on 6/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Medium ruby appearance. Very little lightening as this bottle approaches age 12.

Pronounced nose of cherry liqueur, melted red and black liquorice, baking spice and even some rosemary and thyme. Very impressive nose and much more pronounced (based on my notes) than a bottle drunk 5 years ago that comes from the same case.

Full bodied with still plenty of structure and acidity. This bottle would be easy to pick out as CDP in a blind tasting, but I would never guess the age- tastes 5 years younger than it is. Gorgeous mouthfeel with lots of similar flavor characteristics and a long finish.

In my experience once CDP hits 10 years old "there are no great wines only great bottles" and this is a great bottle. Drink now or hold for up to another decade in a cold cellar. (2114 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 5/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Mörk frukt med bigaråer i spetsen. Hade förväntat mig ett varmare vin. Här är syra och tanninen lugna och eleganta. Kanske hade hoppats på mera mognadstoner. Men det är ett mycket bra vin. (1935 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 1/9/2021 & rated 92 points: My first of 3 drank with braised pork shoulder. great fruit and good acid balance. Drink or hold. (2211 views)
Tasted by Myman24 on 1/4/2021: Flawed (2009 views)
Tasted by Doblk on 12/26/2020 & rated 92 points: Drinking very well. Long decant. Classic CdP profile that went well with Christmas rib roast. Had with a 2006 Clos St Jean, which had more nose but this was more balanced. People split pretty evenly on which they liked better. (1842 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 11/1/2020 & rated 92 points: Short decant to remove broken cork, should have used the Ah So. This opened up quickly to muted kirsch and leather aromas, red fruits, well balanced. (1745 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 10/11/2020 & rated 94 points: Another beautiful showing of this very good Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Open, radiant, ready-to-drink and with beautiful balance of structure and still youthful fruit. Lovely. (2025 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 9/27/2020 & rated 91 points: Splash decant. Dark garnet, suspended sediment. Fragrant bouquet of kirsch. Palate follows nose, lifted but sweet red cherry, some nice spice notes and a nice line of acidity giving a lingering final. Medium bodied, quite polished with great balance. Tannins fully integrated.

This is open for business and very pleasant. Drinks well at cellar temperature as while it warms alcohol begins to be perceptible. Otherwise, just serve this with some relatively rich foods and it's poise and balance will shine. (1422 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 8/20/2020 & rated 92 points: Nice spot in the drinking window. Secondary flavors are reasonably developed. If that's what you prefer, then they'll probably improve further for another few years before a decline, but it's at a nice point now. If you prefer primary fruit flavors, then drink up, because that ship is sailing away. (1478 views)
Tasted by leslievb on 2/28/2020 & rated 90 points: Yummy. In NY with Hans and Mike (1698 views)
Tasted by Rob-Rah on 1/30/2020 & rated 94 points: Dark. This doesn't look over 10 years old! Very youthful. Masses of rich, sweet fruit. Tonnes of alcohol. Tannins very much there - though you'd find this flabby if they were too soft. Plums. Compote. Darker notes. Almost heady. Sweet. Grippy finish of tannins and acids. Not complex but hedonistic. Gutsy. Hard to know how you match this to food! Though I like this very much indeed.

Why is this so cheap? (£33-£40 GBP pre-tax) The latest round of 2016s in this kind of style and quality all came out at twice this price. (1761 views)
Tasted by Golf_Wine on 3/16/2019 & rated 90 points: Dark, rich, thick, sweet, spiced wine. No mistaking where this is from.
Drank over 1.5 hours and drank better and better. Some sediment in the bottle. Have been drinking mostly Burgundy as of lately and is missing something that never existed in this bottle of wine....red berries and fruits. I would not wait on this wine, a little too sweet, for me, as it is and imagine the fruits that are there will fall off in a few years. After all that, a good wine but that 1-1.5% extra alcohol compared to a burgundy is noticeable to me. (2497 views)
Tasted by btbush on 2/17/2019: Blunt. Interesting. Dense fruit. Served with tart from winter squash, cheese bacon and Brussel sprouts. Tar, asphalt. Plums no decant. Cool from cellar. Could age more but very pleasant looking at snow outside the windows. 90 (2372 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 2/15/2019 & rated 95 points: Time to check in on this after about 2-3 years since my last bottle. Still pretty dark garnet color. Notes of mainly dark cherries, black currant, plums, kirsch, some roasted meat, graphite, also some licorice and provençal herbs. It's full-bodied and dense, the alcohol is slightly recognizable but not disturbing… this is CdP. Medium acidity and medium tannin add some structure. Long finish. This is entering its drinking window and will stay here for a few years. Very good and excellent value for top-notch CdP. (2938 views)
Tasted by B&PBaker on 2/12/2019 & rated 92 points: Lots of good fruit. Pleasant in all aspects. (2027 views)
Tasted by olalar on 10/6/2018 & rated 91 points: Very smooth but not as exciting as last time. (2251 views)
Tasted by B&PBaker on 9/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Nice smooth fruity CDP. Good stuff. Subdued. 92 (1897 views)
Tasted by chanote44 on 6/12/2018 & rated 93 points: Dark berry fruit and chocolate mixed with garrigue and a little funk. Absolutely delicious. Smooth and well integrated. Medium length finish. (2381 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 4/5/2018 & rated 90 points: Opened last night. Not quite the equal of my first bottle. Medium ruby with violet rim. Nose is relatively straightforward, with crushed raspberries predominating. Medium-bodied and flashy in the mouth, this is drinking very well at the moment although it is not as good as my first bottle and lacks a bit in complexity. Still, a good bottle, and a relatively decent value. Medium-bodied and fleshy in the mouth, this is drinking very well at the moment although it is not as good as my first bottle and lacks a bit in complexity. Still, a good bottle, and a relatively decent value. 4-12-16-8: 90/100. (2710 views)

Roger Sabon

Producer website - Read more about Roger Sabon

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape. Quote from the homepage of the domain: "One of the oldest documented landholders in Chateauneuf du Pape, the Sabon family has controlled vineyards in the zone since 1540".
Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert Sabon.
The vinification is since 2001 in the care of Didier Négron, son-in-law of Jean- Jacques Sabon.
Denis and his son Julien take care of the fields. Delphine, daughter of Denis is often in the reception.

Today the property has 15 ha. in AOC Chateauneuf du Pape and owns 17 ha. of vineyards in Roquemaure from where Lirac and Cotes du Rhone are made.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
