Outstanding nose, jumps from the glass with all the Bordeaux forest floor, dark fruit, oak spice and farmyard notes. Elegant palate with melted tannins. One of these, "that's why we drink Bordeaux bottles". (1194 views) | | Tasted by AllRed on 3/17/2021 & rated 90 points: Courtesy of tlv, decanted off its sediment. Garnet core with some light bricking. Earthy brett notes with plenty of red fruit as well. Integrated tannin. Red fruit and earthy tones on the palate with a nice finish. Very nice; drink now. (2030 views) | | Tasted by John McCabe on 1/5/2020 & rated 92 points: This was very charming - sweet bouquet and lovely sweetness on the palate. Light-bodied, so not much in terms of power but plenty of charm. Showing well. Elegant - good by itself vs. with food. (2204 views) | | Tasted by thelostverse on 10/26/2018 & rated 92 points: Opened at Anvil. I knew I was having lamb tonight and brought this for just that reason. This was in a great place for me and paired beautifully with the lamb. Notes of dark fruit and game. The aromas here are richer with sweet cherry, menthol and horsey notes. Good concentration to the smooth and sweet fruit. Much younger than the wine next to it -- I was guessing about 15 years difference. Really over-performed the vintage. (3330 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/2/2017 & rated 90 points: Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind: Tasted blind. Good power, nicely fresh, but just modest nuance. Good performance for the vintage. Served alongside the wonderful 1982. (4115 views) | | Tasted by cephomer on 11/21/2015 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured tonite after grabbing indiscriminately from the cellar. Garnet in color & showing its age, nose of earth, some strawberries & funk. Light bodied, still a bit of fruit here, but mostly of earth and minerals. Much more pleasant than expected, but clearly past its prime. (4073 views) | | Tasted by danielk168 on 7/8/2011 & rated 88 points: Decanted about 1 hour, soft elegant aromatics of floral and minerals, body quite thin, some bricking, very soft tannins. This bottle is likely past its peak but still a pleasure to drink. (7935 views) | | Tasted by ScottyB on 6/30/2011 & rated 89 points: Garnet red, started with smoky/peppery nose that developed more ripe strawberry, red rose, ripe vine tomato and molasses with time in the glass. Light body, with fine tannins and good balance. Surprisingly long length. Considering this is an off vintage, it gave considerable pleasure, and was a relative bargain. At its peak. Excellent, 89. (7272 views) | | Tasted by bacchusnyon on 6/12/2010 & rated 90 points: Opened five hours in advance and decanted. This was important, since the opening tastes were a bit green and herbacious. Five hours later the wine had rounded nicely - although it is still not a powerful wine, but the tannins had loosened their grip, and nice fruit, not jammy, but light red fruits, were present. Time to drink this up (7322 views) | | Tasted by AndrewSGHall on 4/14/2010: Started off a bit rough with tail ends of plummy fruit hanging on a rough, floppy structure. Pulled together in the glass and even more after several hours in the bottle. Lovely pencil lead, tobacco and lined-out fruit. Nice depth and structure. Medium finish with persistent mineral/graphite and earth. Ended up a really pretty bottle of wine that way exceeded the vintage. (7417 views) | | Tasted by TashNYC on 5/5/2009 & rated 89 points: Better than our last bottle. Tobacco, earth, cassis & fruit. Seemed a little more mature than I expected. This bottle won't last as long as some (who have written notes). We got this from auction at Winebid.com. So might have had a storage issue (6221 views) | | Tasted by TashNYC on 12/22/2008 & rated 88 points: Wine to celebrate Jen becoming an ACM Fellow: Some red fruit, tobacco & tannins, but a little faded. Hope to have better luck with the next bottle. (3966 views) | | Tasted by Niagara on 5/19/2008 & rated 93 points: This is a very, very good wine. It gets better with time, developing over an hour of decanting all of the heft of a California wine but with far more sophistication and nuance ... like a Cirque du Soleil on the palate, instead of a UFC cage match. Served with grilled lamb chops: what a treat! And this from a less-than-spectacular vintage ... can't wait to try my '00s and '01s. (4238 views) | | Tasted by Paul D on 3/26/2008 & rated 90 points: Medium garnet core, pale garnet rim. Developed, fresh, attractive nose showing tobacco, earth, some cassis and strawberry fruit. Medium bodied on the palate, quite fruity on the initial attack and then the developed flavours coming through again on the mid-palate, including tobacco and also distinct pessac baked earth notes. This has slightly chalky (but not unpleasant) tannins and nice fresh acidity and whilst not at all lean has a certain appetising austerity about it. The finish is medium/good length with an enjoyable, savoury character. Really very good indeed, such a shame they don't make this wine like this anymore. (4310 views) | | Tasted by gurbaz on 2/14/2007: immer noch super, aber langsam austrinken (4947 views) | | Tasted by Brad L on 9/12/2006: Lovely wine; much more presence than expected. This was a fair amount better than a bottle we had a couple of years ago. Saddle leather, bitter chocolate, and blackcurrant on nose and in mouth, with fairly complex layers and interplays. Long finish. I don't score but this for me was a 90+ point bottle. (4662 views) | | Tasted by SGates on 4/12/2006 & rated 89 points: See Greenblanket's notes in his tasting event. (5538 views) | | Tasted by SimonG on 3/31/2006: Green and unripe on the nose. Nice crisp fruit. Some grip. Interesting taste, can't quite place it but slightly peppery and spicy. Long. Not at all bad. RJ's, London. Grand Vin in weak year v Second wine in good year offline. (5235 views) | | Tasted by greenblanket on 3/22/2006 & rated 90 points: An Eclectic Group of Cabernets: This was one of two French wines in a recent blind cab tasting. It was rated in the bottom half by our tasters causing quite a stir when the bags were pulled. I believe it was just starting to open and develop a full palate as the evening ended. In fact, I found it to be wonderful and fully developed the next morning after sitting open since midnight. Leather and mature fruit and spice with a wonderful fully developed palate and fine tannins to spare. Several of us were quite ashamed by our enchantment with its’ big fruity (and perhaps slutty) Italian competitor. (5957 views) | | Tasted by gurbaz on 2/12/2006 & rated 93 points: Das war ein geniales Erlebnis! Kuhstall pur in der Nase, stark, dicht, konzentriert im Gaumen, langer Abgang! (5189 views) | | Tasted by Paul D on 1/7/2006 & rated 88 points: Deep ruby core, medium garnet/mahogany rim. Medium intense nose, developed, initially showing blackcurrant and pencil lead, becoming increasingly tobaccoey with time with slight traces of smoke. This is a medium bodied wine with medium soft, fine tanins and medium + acidity. There is reasonably concentrated savoury, elegant blackcurrant fruit with hints of tobacco leaf on the palate followed by a long savoury finish with lingering chalky and blackcurrant notes. Overall a very nice wine, but lacking the depth and complexity to warrant a higher score. Drinking now, should be fine for another 2-3 years. (5436 views) | | Tasted by Saint Stephen on 8/19/2005 & rated 88 points: What you'd expect from a top wine in an off year. Very nice but not mind-blowing by any means. Somewhat austere, with lovely slate/stone hiding red fruit. I like the nose quite a bit - classic Graves, even if somewhat muted. Lovely wine that is drinking well right now. | Château Pape Clément Producer website - Read more about Chateau Pape ClementRed Bordeaux BlendRed Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.
Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.France Vins de France (Office National Interprofessionnel des Vins ) | Pages Vins, Directory of French Winegrowers | French Wine (Wikipedia)

History of Bordeaux
History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification
"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson
"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman "The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson
"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson
"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon RimmermanGraves Vins de Graves (Conseil des Vins de Graves) - Read more about Pessac Leogan Graves and its winesPessac-Léognan Pessac-Leognan reds: Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Soil: Predominantly gravel and sandy rock, with varying proportions of clay and sandstone Surface Area: 1,491 ha
