Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Winiac on 12/13/2016 & rated 88 points: Too much oak, and tad low on a idle for my taste. Well riped fruit and fair balance. Short length and mildly bitter finish. (1333 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 4/19/2015 & rated 89 points: Fruity and soft. Very drinkable. Your quintessential generous California wine. (1863 views)
Tasted by cblinstrub on 2/7/2015 & rated 93 points: Paired with smoked duck. Surprising weight and structure for a 6 year old syrah. Need to pick up a couple more bottles next time I'm over in Sonoma. Fantastic wine, decanted for an hour, but still think another 3 years would uncover its true potential. (1856 views)
Tasted by espencer43 on 12/14/2014 & rated 90 points: Very dark berry flavor. Good example of a big CA Syrah (1014 views)
Tasted by garygailkrivan on 6/28/2014 & rated 90 points: Big and Bold lots of Pepper on the palate with hints of Dark Berries. (2252 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 2/25/2014 & rated 90 points: Very fruity and Lucius, but has a cooked plum and blueberry aroma that takes away from its freshness. (2320 views)
Tasted by tautlinehitch on 12/27/2013 & rated 92 points: Sadly I didn't take detailed notes while tasting this, several days ago. I do remember being impressed with the balance and elegance. More restrained in style than most Chalk Hill reds, even with 15.5% alcohol it felt lean, complex, and subtle. Entering its prime this year I think, but plenty of years left in it. (1321 views)
Tasted by helispud on 12/20/2013 & rated 90 points: Worked very well with baby Back ribs and sourdough bread. (924 views)
Tasted by Plunge the Worm on 7/27/2013 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby, stains the glass. Fresh fruity nose when first opened. Flavors of cassis and dried flowers-rose, oak. Bottle age begins to show with a little air. This wine is on the front side of ready to drink. Enjoy for several more years. (1235 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
