Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 15 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Blake Brown on 5/2/2017 & rated 91 points: 1999 RIDGE PAGANI RANCH SONOMA VALLEY ZINFANDEL [3 btls]- 7% Alicante Bouschet, 3% Petit Sirah; very similar to the 99` Geyserville in that I found clove, mint and dried cranberry notes plus some talc; the fruit seemed to be on the wild side; I checked my glass to make sure I did not still have the Geyserville in it. (1948 views)
Tasted by gjv115 on 3/28/2017 & rated 90 points: Pnp. Had at a tasting of old Zins. One of the best wines of the night. Still has some cherry fruit. Good balance. A little pepper. A very good wine. (2074 views)
Tasted by Bil on 12/14/2014 & rated 86 points: Beautiful wine that sat in my cellar a few years too long. Nose is amazing, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and oak. Tasting, it's missing the big punch of fruit you expect from this Zin but still very pleasant. (2878 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 11/8/2009 flawed bottle: Boys nite with New World wines, uncommon varietals (Reno, NV): Badly corked. (5177 views)
Tasted by fredb on 1/18/2009: Deep red color, some transparency starting to be evident with enough back lighting. Effusive zin-berry nose, bordering on jammy, but remains fresh. On the palate, this has the Draper perfume with blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, and some licorice notes. This has integrated nicely, but still shows a very primary fruit profile. Good now and will likely develop some secondary character over the next decade, if you care to hold. (4521 views)
Tasted by dlynch on 9/14/2008 & rated 91 points: In its prime -- I wouldn't hang on to this much longer. Moderate sediment.

Lucious fruit (more stone than berry), balanced with good acid. Tannin well integrated. Not overblown, but still a "big" wine. (3191 views)
Tasted by cassel on 4/4/2007 & rated 89 points: Enjoyed with the 98 Pagani. Tannins were very little noticed. Last of the case. (3500 views)
Tasted by otisabdul on 1/29/2006 & rated 83 points: Thin and tired. Drink up. (2974 views)
Tasted by odu83 on 1/19/2006 & rated 89 points: Very good. Fully integrated tannins. Anyone holding this wine should drink it now (2255 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 1/23/2004 & rated 91 points: Red Carpet: Med. scarlet purple, little change; beaut. smth int. nose of garrigue/moount. brush/leather, some craberry, some spices; nice frty-sour candy attack, grt well-bal, hint of van., med. bod, med. t’s, good all around, pleasant fin. (789 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 2/20/2003 & rated 90 points: From a famous 100 year old vineyard. This is a blend of 90% Zin, 7% alicote Bouschet and 3% Petite Sirah according to Otis. This full bodied wine had a muscular frame to carry the fruit. It had dry tannins and I noted plum and pepper nuances with only a slightly bitter but not unpleasant finish. 90 points. (1852 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 7/15/2002 & rated 89 points: Bright disc. Opaque purple with purple rim. Clean nose showing very intense blackberry, black plum, fresh-cut wood (sawdust) and black pepper. Good acidity, medium alcohol (14.1%) and medium tannins. The tannins are fairly supple. Similar flavors as nose, with good varietal character. Medium, slightly hot finish. (1628 views)
Tasted by Oberhau on 9/28/2001 & rated 85 points: Delicious, deep color, full flavor, smooth (1307 views)

The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Zinfandel

ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-Zinfandel

Pagani Ranch

The old Pagani Ranch on the east side of Sonoma Valley. 100-year-old zinfandel, petite sirah, alicaante, mataro, and carignane vines.

(Fall 2012 Ridge Wine Club notes:)

Since 1991, Ridge has made zinfandel from the old Pagani vineyard on the east-facing side of the Sonoma Valley. All the vines were planted 90 to 115 years ago.

This is a fine example of what we look for in a vineyard: low-yielding old vines, carefully tended by a quality-conscious family who, in this case, have worked the land for four generations.

The climate here is generally cooler than at Lytton Springs.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma County

Mendocino County

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
