 Tasted by Ernestas on 8/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Was served by the glass at Cafe Lavinal in Pauillac, village of Bages. Fifth Growth property with extensive 100 ha vineyard. Made from a blend of 72% CS, 23% Merlot, 3% CF and 2% PV, aged for 15 months in oak, 65% new. Deep garnet colour. Intense and savoury aroma of spices, plums, cassis, tobacco, chocolate, spices. Medium+ body not as expressive as aroma, but shows good concentration and spiced and smoky layered flavours, some prunes cassis and vanilla as well, concludes with finely grained velvety tannins.  Tasted by Papies on 7/29/2023 & rated 92 points: It’s been almost 8 years since we tried this ( Papies 92) and has made a few strides forward but still could use some more. Soft spice and herbs along with reluctant dark fruits , open on the nose but the palate is still needs a bit more. Well it’s in its drinking window but still a bit shy and we worry it might never break out as the austerity of Pauillac is not helping the more linear 2011 vintage. On va voir. Still a beautiful wine and one to cherish. 92 again (1991 views)

Good acidity too with fruit subdued. Overall a very classic claret which could be drunk now or down the road. (2402 views)

I decanted to remove sediment then returned the wine to the bottle without further aeration.

Intense, but lovely aromas of warm plums and red cherry, leather, mild bell pepper, mint and cigar box. On the palate there is some uplifting acidity and mildly grippy tannins. Moderately long finish.

Very parfumed nose, sous bois, raspberries, cherries, vanilla, espresso, excellent. Nice mouth, perfectly balanced, I like it better than last time. Decanting is the trick here I believe. Beautiful raspberry and blueberries after a while. Med acidity, med body, med alcohol, Med flavor intensity, med tannins and med finish. Beautiful fruits from the wood, slight vanilla and with a certain greenness, it does not linger very long. Still I like this one. Nice 👍 and recommend some decanting. (2831 views)

 Tasted by T.E.D. on 1/29/2022 & rated 92 points: U Club NYC. Good color, dark and clear. Immediate nose of crushed stones, earth, hints of pepper and spices. Very aromatic from the beginning. Palate leaned medium body, perhaps a bit thin, none the less showed very classic Paullic profile. Muscular with more hard earth, stone fruits, cassis, vegatation, and spice. Touches of cedar. Aromas of yeast extract, brambly fruit, slight pyrazine, woody notes (especially cedar), slightly meaty. With time in the glass a pretty lifted violet and some Cassis. Medium plus intensity acidity, slightly sour black fruits, with a tiny Creme de Cassis is underpinning, tannins are medium plus intensity but supportive rather than drying, flour textured, all travel long.  Tasted by Cailles on 11/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Bordeaux 2011 - 10 Years On - 30 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. A few observations: 1) As expected, it's a mediocre vintage with many wines lacking depth and mid palate weight of great vintages. My average score for the reds was 91.3 pts vs group scores at more recent horizontals for 2010 (93.0), 2000 (92.7) and 2009 (93.9). 2) I expected more green/unripe notes and drying tannins but that is not the case (hence the solid 91.3 average). Most wines showed well-made (with only 6 out of 30 reds rated below 90 pts). 3) Left bank (average 91.8 pts) clearly trumps right bank (90.6) thanks to more mid palate substance. 4) Virtually no wine showed a) over extracted and already dying and b) with far too much ripeness. Both 2009/2010 (and 2015/2018) have several wines with these problem. 5) Most wines are in a good drinking window. Although not yet with tertiary complexity, the structure has softened and the wines are open (even without extended decanting). 6) Unfortunately (due to price), the best reds were Le Pin (97+ pts), Margaux (96), Petrus (96) and Mouton (95). 7) Good vintage for Sauternes it seems (we tasted only two) with a surprising Giraud (96 pts) beating a too sweet Yquem (93).

TN: Medium- expressive on the nose, not much expressive. But quite good on the palate, round, fresh, without any hard edges but not much complexity either. Fine dark red and dark fruit, some tobacco and some earthy notes. Not overly exciting but solid effort worth 92 pts. (3455 views)

 Tasted by Hendmo on 11/16/2020 & rated 92 points: A pleasant, rich nose of dark berries, plums with hints of secondary and tertiary aromas, mostly cedar and a touch of herbs. Smooth on the mid-palate, with the juicy fruit nicely balanced by the finely judged acidity. Not especially deep or complex right now, but certainly very pleasant to drink. I initially picked it as from St Emilion because it was so easy going and lacked the graphite/pencil lead aromas of the left bank. (4337 views)

Over time cream, plain chocolate, tobacco notes and slight brambles show in a supporting role on the nose as well as a slightly jammy fruit note, oddly. in the mouth it's more savoury than I expected it to be, juicy medium plus acidity, cedar, blackcurrant and brambles, tight, grippy, chalky tannins carry the fruit long. BACKGROUND: The wine of Château Lynch-Bages is part of the lineage of the great Pauillac wines. Blended mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines structure and finesse, elegance and longevity. It is further distinguished by its opulence. Generous right from its youth, it develops more flavours and greater complexity as it matures.

The affirmation of the Lynch-Bages style came with the arrival of Jean-Charles Cazes to head the estate in 1934. An innovative winemaker, emblematic of a new generation of owners willing to break with tradition and taking risks to ensure truly ripe harvests, he was known for often being the last to harvest in Pauillac. From 1945 onwards, the fame of the château emerged thanks to a series of great vintages. Some, despite being considered difficult to grow in Bordeaux, are particularly successful at Lynch-Bages. His wines are characterized by their deep colour, their tannic structure, their controlled concentration and elegant sensuality. The vintages vinified by André Cazes, and after him Jean-Michel Cazes, confirm this trend.

The style of the wines has refined over the years, gaining suppleness and softness, whilst their consistency has been established over time. Then as now, Château Lynch-Bages has been characterised by its extraordinary qualitative homogeneity. Powerful, elegant and open, vintage after vintage, the wine has acquired greater accuracy, adding distinction to the hedonistic character that made its reputation.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
